Penfield and HF-L punch tickets to Sectional Finals
Class A: (3)Penfield 10, (2)Fairport 7 Griffin Banister scored four times pacing Penfield to a semifinal win at Spencerport high school Friday night. The Patriots led this game start to finish. Jake Maurer added a hat trick for Penfield and Mason Schembri made 10 saves—many of which were spectacular. The Patriots jumped out to a 3-1 lead early. Robert Protz scored one of his three Fairport goals in the final three minutes of the half to close the Red Raiders within 4-3 after 24 minutes. Banninster and Maurer each scored goals in the first 68 seconds of the second half for the Patriots who eventually built an 8-4 lead. Protz answered again for Fairport and then the Raiders got a break when Penfield accidentally put a rebound into their own net with 1.8 seconds left in the quarter. The Penfield lead was down to 8-6. Schembri and the defense shut the door from there. The Raiders scored only once and were never again closer than two goals. Penfield opened the season with a five-game losing streak, but the Patriots are now 11-7. They will meet top-seeded McQuaid for the Class A title Tuesday evening at Hobart College with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Fairport finished their season at 8-8. Class C: (2) Honeoye Falls-Lima Central 14, (3) Geneva 5 Only down by three, Geneva still had life at the start of the second half. That was until HF-L's Quinn Kailbourne opened the game up, scoring four of his six goals in the second half, leading all scorers on the night. Cash Arena for the Cougars added four goals of his own, including two in a 19-second span to end the second half. Grady Goodberlet had two of his own, followed by Jackson Coon and Marco Vengoechea with one each. Goodberlet and Coon were the key distributors of the game, with three assists each. In goal, Jason Bennett ended the night with 11 saves, only allowing one goal in the second half. On the opposite side, Ryland Dunham led the way for Geneva, with three goals, all coming in the first half. Ben Budgar added one goal and one assist for the Panthers. Jack Dunham and Dominick Verdora found their way into the box score as well. Durham assisted Budgar's first goal of the night, while Verdora scored Geneva's lone goal of the second half. HF-L will take on top-seeded Palmyra-Macedon, who come off a huge 21-10 victory over Wayne. The Class C title game is set for next Friday at Hobart College, with faceoff scheduled for 5pm. Geneva finished their season 13-5. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Penfield's Emling tops Section Five Best
Patrick Emling had himself a week. So did his Penfield baseball team. The Patriots senior had a run and an RBI–all the offense in a 2-0 win–that helped Penfield to a round one sectional win on Thursday. He scored the winning run in Penfield's extra inning stunner against top seeded Athena Friday. Finally, Emling went 3-3 with two RBIs and twirled a complete game with seven strikeouts as Penfield won for their third playoff game in three days. By the way, the Patriots are the 16(!) seed in the Class AA playoffs and now sit two wins short of an all-time Cinderella story. That's not all the greatness for this week's edition of Section Five Best. Cal-Mum's Emma Brogan won the high jump and triple jump at the Livingston County meet last week. She added a runner-up in the 100 meters. It all was good enough to earn Brogan LCAA Female Track Athlete of the Year honors. In lacrosse, Connor Moore had an eight goal explosion for Irondequoit last Wednesday. He followed with four goals and three assists over the weekend as the Eagles won both games. Kiera Gioseffi closed her regular season with a pair of five goal games helping Canandaigua head into the playoffs hot. Aimee Turner keeps getting her name called this spring. The Arcadia quarterback marched the titles into the flag football finals with a three touchdown performance in the semis that featured 250 total yards, including 179 on the ground. Arcadia's Turner is Player of the Week
Aimee Turner of Arcadia flag football led the Titans to three wins last week, earning our Player of the Week. On Tuesday, the senior started on both sides of the ball, going 16-23 in the air with 185 yards and four touchdowns. She also added three interceptions on defense, returning two for touchdowns. On Thursday, Turner led Arcadia to a five-point win with three touchdown passes. She then finished her week on Saturday with a big win over Penfield, leading the Titans with 20 completions for 357 yards and five touchdowns. She also had 56 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground as Arcadia clinched the top spot in Class B. Arcadia finished its regular season undefeated at 10-0 and our Player of the Week is a big reason why. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Victor wins thriller between girls lax elites
Julia Bruno scored with 8.9 seconds left to give Victor a come from behind 11-10 win over Penfield Wednesday night on Five Mile Line Road. The two teams entered the night with a combined 16-3 record and played like two favorites to win a sectional title. The largest lead of the game was two and the lacrosse was excellent. After a 3-3 first half, each team doubled their score in the first six minutes of the third quarter. Whitey Reynolds and Jenna Capozzi each scored late in the third to give Penfield an 8-6 advantage heading to the fourth. Bruno and McKenna Anderson erased that lead less than three minutes in the fourth quarter. From there, the top players took over. Reynolds and Bruno exchanged goals exactly a minute apart to make it 9-9. Reynolds scored again 25 seconds later for a 10-9 Penfield lead, but Victor got a bit of luck to tie. Allie Pisano mishandled a pass and the ball rolled in front of her. As the Penfield defender raced forward to nab the loose ball, Pisano scooped it on the run and blew by the, now, out of position defender to tie the game again with just over three minutes to play. Mia Finocchario made a point blank save for Victor with just over two minutes left to hold the tie. After a scoreless possession each way, Victor had the ball just behind midfield out of a time out with 20 seconds remaining. A cross field clearing attempt right after the whistle was nearly intercepted by the Patriots, but Bruno grabbed the ball with inches to spare and suddenly had acres of space. Penfield never stepped up to stop the ball and Bruno walked right down main street for the winner. Victor won the ensuing faceoff to secure the victory. Bruno finished with a game-high five goals for the Blue Devils. Pisano, Camryn Adrid and Morgan Livingston added two apiece. Reynolds paced the Patriots with four goals and two assists. Capozzi had a five point game with two goals and three helpers. Emma Alexander also scored twice. Victor has now won seven in a row and remain unbeaten in Section Five play. They improve to 9-1. Penfield had a five game win streak snapped and fell to 8-3. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
