Penfield's Emling tops Section Five Best

Yahoo28-05-2025
Patrick Emling had himself a week. So did his Penfield baseball team.
The Patriots senior had a run and an RBI–all the offense in a 2-0 win–that helped Penfield to a round one sectional win on Thursday. He scored the winning run in Penfield's extra inning stunner against top seeded Athena Friday. Finally, Emling went 3-3 with two RBIs and twirled a complete game with seven strikeouts as Penfield won for their third playoff game in three days.
By the way, the Patriots are the 16(!) seed in the Class AA playoffs and now sit two wins short of an all-time Cinderella story.
That's not all the greatness for this week's edition of Section Five Best. Cal-Mum's Emma Brogan won the high jump and triple jump at the Livingston County meet last week. She added a runner-up in the 100 meters. It all was good enough to earn Brogan LCAA Female Track Athlete of the Year honors.
In lacrosse, Connor Moore had an eight goal explosion for Irondequoit last Wednesday. He followed with four goals and three assists over the weekend as the Eagles won both games. Kiera Gioseffi closed her regular season with a pair of five goal games helping Canandaigua head into the playoffs hot.
Aimee Turner keeps getting her name called this spring. The Arcadia quarterback marched the titles into the flag football finals with a three touchdown performance in the semis that featured 250 total yards, including 179 on the ground.

Where should fantasy managers look to draft TreVeyon Henderson?

Yahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and Justin Boone examine the fantasy outlook for the Patriots rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson through two preseason games. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The star of the preseason, let's say, is Travon Henderson. I think he's probably going to be the picture on this show. Um, you know, we had a clip that got posted last week when we talked about him, and I always find it funny when you talk about a player who's kind of on the rise like this, especially a rookie, especially in the summer, and you get people responding to it and some people are responding to it saying like, yeah, obviously, we already know that guy's great. How, how, why are you talking about him? It's a waste of time, right? And then you get people like, you know. Mad that you're going to push his ADP up, that they don't want you talking about him because they're not going to be able to get him at the same price that they've been getting him at in their mock drafts. Like, all of that is so funny to me. I love those comments. Keep them coming. I laugh when I see them, and we're not going to stop talking about guys that are on the rise, even if they are obvious players, because we're trying to throw that blanket over all of this, right? And there's some people that no ball and are hardcore fantasy players, and there's some people like some of my friends that just show up. This time of year, and they're trying to play catch up on who's on what team and what's going on, and we got to do stuff for them as well. We got to make sure they know about somebody like Travon Henderson who has just been crushing it, right? And we don't have to spend a ton of time because we've already talked about him on the show, but he continues to look great. 8 touches for 50 scrimmage yards and a touchdown through 2 preseason games. It just gives you like that glimpse of what he's capable of. And Rhamondre Stevenson is still going to be involved. I said this when we did the running back show the other day. When Jamir Gibbs had his rookie season, David Montgomery was still involved, and Jamir Gibbs on a per game basis was the RB 11 in half PPR fantasy points per game. So we could see a very big season from Henderson even if Stevenson is still getting a lot of work in that offense. I'm going to take him in the 4th round. That's a smash pick in the 4th round, even though we were getting him in the 5th and maybe even the 6th earlier this summer. Take him in the 4th. The third, I've seen him going in some leagues, that might be a little bit rich for me. He might pay that off, but I don't think you need to go that high with it. If someone wants to take him in the third, I'm gonna let them do it, and I'm gonna find somebody else. Close

Anfernee Jennings Makes Most Of Time On The Patriots Roster's Edge

The writing is often on the wall when an NFL veteran is on the field late in a preseason game. But if that's the case for Anfernee Jennings, he made the most of his time out there after halftime at U.S. Bank Stadium. Only a campaign removed from signing a three-year, $12 million contract extension with $5.5 million guaranteed, the New England Patriots outside linebacker finds himself on the bubble. That made for a busy Saturday. That wasn't good news for the Minnesota Vikings. The 28-year-old hit home for three sacks in what became a 20-12 win. And in a hurry. The initial takedown arrived at the 5:41 mark in the third quarter as Jennings went unblocked, chased backup quarterback Max Brosmer out of play action and swept the shoelaces of the rookie free agent for a loss of 14 yards. A delay-of-game penalty followed for the offense. So did the next takedown on the next snap. It saw right tackle Leroy Watson IV turned around. It saw the punt team head on for fourth-and-35. There was more work to be done to secure the hat-trick. There was the final quarter, long after a long line of New England teammates had become sideline spectators. 'I've seen a competitiveness, and Anfernee has been around, and we've had really good conversations,' Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said during his postgame press conference on Saturday. 'You try to draft some guys and there are some young guys in here and that's a fine balance.' With 12:08 remaining, Jennings remained on the edge with a hand on the turf. From there, the University of Alabama product ripped up field and broadsided the quarterback on third-and-5. Defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms Jr. helped the 6-foot-2, 255-pound Jennings up to his feet. His afternoon spanned 23 snaps on defense to go with work on special teams. He previously played a combined 43 snaps in the summer opener versus the Washington Commanders. 'We have to have 11 out there every play,' Vrabel said of preseason personnel usage. 'And so, this is the third week of our first training camp together as a coaching staff and as a team. That's what I wanted everybody to realize. It's in the third week of our first year. We have to get this right, and everybody just be prepared to play and for however long that you're in there, or whenever you're asked to help on special teams.' But there's an inevitability to August. On a depth chart featuring starters Keion White and Harold Landry III, rotational rusher K'Lavon Chaisson, offseason award winner Truman Jones and rookies Bradyn Swinson and Elijah Ponder, there's difficult decisions coming. An active roster of 91 will soon stand at 53. Time will tell where the NFL's cutdown deadline leaves a two-time national champion whose tenure in Foxborough dates back to 2020. The Patriots career has included 61 games and 37 starts for Jennings. Known for setting a strong edge, the former No. 87 overall pick has totaled 191 tackles, including 22 for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He's also had a hand in three batted passes, two forced fumbles and one recovery. 'To his credit,' added Vrabel, 'he's done nothing but compete in practice, earn reps, earn opportunities in the game, and take advantage of every one that he's gotten and to factor today, and even last week.'

Will Reichard makes third FG

Catch up on live reaction and insight from Saturday's busy NFL preseason slate Getty Images Q4 11:24 - Patriots 17, Vikings 9 Will Reichard is now 3-for-3 on field goals today, this time converting from 47 yards out to make it a one-possession game once again. Getty Images Total yards in this game with 12:18 left: Q4 14:11 - Patriots 17, Vikings 6 New England gets on the board for the first time in the second half via a 28-yard field goal by John Romo, capping off an 11-play, 28-yard drive. Q3 4:19 - Colts 13, Packers 10 The Packers find the end zone for the first time today as Israel Abanikanda runs in from three yards out. The running back has carried the ball 12 times for 43 yards today. Abanikanda is only 22 years old but already in his third season, playing for his third team after stints with the Jets and 49ers. Q3 10:36 - Dolphins 14, Lions 14 Rookie QB Quinn Ewers connects with Theo Wease Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown, tying this game up. Getty Images Coming out of Philly, the Browns have to be concerned with: Overall offensive firepower CB depth OL depth That said, they have to be most pleased with the pass rush. I have no idea how the last 8-10 roster spots will shake out. Guessing they'll keep all 4 QBs. Eagles CB A.J. Woods is leaving the sideline on a cart. Q3 4:14 - Browns 19, Eagles 13 The offenses have been rough to watch in the second half, tallying five punts and of course the pick six a few minutes ago. Tyler Huntley and the Browns offense are back on the field. Getty Images After Daniel Jones led the Colts' first two drives of the day and Anthony Richardson took over for the rest of the first half, Riley Leonard is now in at quarterback. Here's how the two men competing for the starting job fared today: Jones: 7/11 passing, 101 yards 7/11 passing, 101 yards Richardson: 6/11 passing, 73 yards Richardson also rushed for nine yards on one attempt. Neither threw a touchdown or interception. What The Athletic's Colton Pouncy wrote about Isaac TeSlaa ahead of today's game: The more you watch TeSlaa, the more you wonder how much longer he's going to play in these preseason games. Yes, he needs the reps since he isn't getting many with the first-team offense right now. He's far from a finished product, but he's starting to feel increasingly important as time goes on. When the Lions line up for QB-WR throws in warmups, you see TeSlaa catching passes exclusively from Jared Goff. Most of Detroit's top weapons only catch passes from Goff during this period. It is perhaps a sign of what's to come. Not to mention, TeSlaa has impressed in both preseason contests, hauling in his first touchdown vs. the Falcons. As long as he's out there, he's must-see TV if you're a Lions fan. Q3 8:47 - Patriots 14, Vikings 6 Max Bosmer leads Minnesota on a 12-play, 48-yard drive that ends with a 54-yard field goal from Will Reichard. The Vikings did not score until the final moments of the first half but now only trail by eight points. Q3 10:59 - Browns 19, Eagles 13 Philadelphia had a pick-six in the first half and Cleveland just returned the favor. Dorian Thompson-Robinson gets crushed as he throws and the ball floats a couple feet directly to KJ Henry, who takes it back 45 yards for the score. That was a disastrous sequence for DTR. Getty Images Two games have just reached halftime: Colts 13, Packers 3 Lions 14, Dolphins 7 And the other three have just begun their third quarter: Patriots 14, Vikings 3 Eagles 13, Browns 12 Texans 10, Panthers 3 Q2 0:30 - Lions 14, Dolphins 7 Isaac TeSlaa makes an incredible contested catch for an 18-yard touchdown from Kyle Allen. Q3 15:00 - Eagles 13, Browns 12 The second half is underway in Philadelphia with Kyle McCord and the Eagles offense on the field. Q2 1:04 - Colts 13, Packers 0 Anthony Richardson shakes off a pass rusher and launches the ball downfield to Anthony Gould, completing the pass for 38 yards. Much to the quarterback's chagrin, however, the play is negated by an offensive offside penalty by Adonai Mitchell. If the Packers only take three RBs, which I expect, plays like that fourth-down sack of Zach Wilson are why Chris Brooks might make it over Emanuel Wilson. Poor pass pro rep from Wilson led to the sack. Jacobs and Lloyd are locks. If you need a pass-protecting RB3, Brooks is your guy. Q2 1:50 - Dolphins 7, Lions 7 The Dolphins go for it on fourth-and-4 from the Lions' 9-yard line, but Isaac Ukwu sacks Zach Wilson to force a turnover on downs. Getty Images Halftime - Patriots 14, Vikings 3 We've also reached halftime in Minnesota as the Vikings finally get on the board. Brett Rypien drives the offense 53 yards on seven plays, setting up a 34-yard field goal from Will Reichard.
