Women's Nations League: Wales and Scotland both relegated after defeats
Wales and Scotland both had their likely relegations confirmed while the Republic of Ireland enjoyed a late winner on a dramatic night of Women's Nations League action. Wales lost 1-0 away to Denmark in controversial fashion in Group A4. Rhian Wilkinson's team had realistically required victory in Odense to avoid being sent down to League B but Pernille Harder's 48th-minute strike consigned them to a third defeat of the campaign and bottom spot. It could have been a different story had Jess Fishlock's first-half effort been awarded, with her follow-up shot seemingly crossing the line but not given by the officials and with no VAR in operation, Wales went down narrowly. A 2-1 home loss to Denmark in April put Wales on the verge of relegation from the top tier and they got off to a poor start with defender Mayzee Davies forced off after only six minutes. The 18-year-old sustained a knee issue which could put in doubt her participation in this summer's European Championship. The Welsh did regroup and a moment of controversy occurred midway through the half when Ceri Holland was denied by Maja Bay Østergaard and Fishlock sent an effort towards goal, but Stine Ballisager got back to clear. Replays later appeared to show the ball had crossed the line, but it remained goalless at the break after Amalie Vangsgaard squandered a fine opportunity for Denmark and Harder was twice thwarted in quick succession. It would not take Harder long after half-time to break the deadlock, though, as the Danish forward slotted home in the 48th minute. Wales had chances but relegation to League B was confirmed. Melissa Andreatta began her tenure as Scotland head coach with a 1-0 defeat by Austria which confirmed their relegation and meant they are without a point from their five games to date. The lacklustre home side were fortunate to go into the interval level at Hampden Park with goalkeeper Lee Gibson in fine form. However, the more dominant visitors broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute of the Group A1 clash when ever-dangerous attacker Julia Hickelsberger glanced in a header from a corner. Scotland picked up later in the second half but ended the game still bottom of the tabl. Their final fixture of the campaign comes against the Netherlands on Tuesday for their final fixture, which will also be the final international outing of their captain Rachel Corsie, who came on as a substitute on Friday. Barcelona star Ewa Pajor scored twice within the opening nine minutes as Poland romped to a 4-0 Group B1 win over Northern Ireland in Belfast. Pajor celebrated her 100th senior international cap with a quickfire double at Seaview before Paulina Tomasiak and Adriana Achcinska put the game beyond Tanya Oxtoby's side, who travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday needing a point to finish second behind the Euro 2025-bound Poles. Murphy's 89th-minute winner, which came after Busem Seker's own goal had cancelled out Kader Hancar's opener at the Esenler Stadium, sent Ireland into Tuesday night's home clash with group leaders Slovenia just three points adrift.

Match Report: Bayern Munich Women 2-1 Man United Women
Manchester United Women lost the final of the World Sevens tournament 1-2 to Bayern Munich. The Red Devils confidently dispatched of Manchester City in the semi-final to set up an epic encounter with the free-flowing Germans who beat Paris Saint-Germain 5-0. Advertisement Both sides took some time to settle into the game but it was Bayern who almost opened the scoring. After five minutes, Pernille Harder snuck in at the front post but was well denied by an inspired Phallon Tullis-Joyce from close-range. Moments later United had the crossbar to thank as Magdalena Eriksson hit the bar with a fine volley from a corner. United had to be patient but had their first big moment after 10 minutes when great pressing from Elisbeth Terland resulted in Celine Bizet being presented with an open goal. Nonetheless, the Bayern keeper Maria Luisa Grohs made an outstanding reaction stop to deny United going ahead in the final. Advertisement On 13 minutes Caroline Simon almost fired the Germans in front with a well struck free kick but it belted off the base of Tullis-Joyce's post to keep the scores level. United finally got their noses in front just before half-time when Simi Awujo scored her third of the tournament. Melvine Malard kept hold of the ball well and found the Canadian in the box who took a touch and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. The half-time whistle blew and United were 15 minutes from glory. Bayern almost equalised after just two minutes of the second period but a fantastic double stop by Tullis-Joyce kept United ahead. Advertisement Marc Skinner's side's resistance finally gave way in the 22nd minute when a cross from Harder was expertly converted by Momoko Tanikawa to make it 1-1. After 24 minutes, United's American keeper made another spectacular save by keeping out Bayern from close range after a cleverly worked free kick. She immediately launched the ball up field and found Lisa Naalsund but she could only tamely drag her effort wide. In a very nervy final, it took a moment of magic to give Bayern the lead. On 26 minutes Sarah Zadrazil expertly held the ball up, spun and smashed in an unstoppable drive into the side netting to put the Bavarians in front. Advertisement United pushed for an equaliser but came up short and Bayern were champions. Nonetheless, it was a fine three day experience for the Women's team and they did the club proud with their efforts. Moreover, by finishing runner ups, United bagged $1 million and will hope they can put this to good use to help enhance the squad to compete in next year's Champions League. United will also take heart in the fact that their youngster Awujo was crowned the 'breakout star' of the tournament and she will hope to gain more first team minutes next season at the club. Iceland defender Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir scored late with a header as Bayern took an unassailable 11-point lead over Wolfsburg, which has only three games remaining this season. Advertisement Bayern, which was knocked out of the Women's Champions League by Lyon in the quarterfinals, underlined its domestic dominance by winning every game in the second half of the season. It's Bayern's seventh Bundesliga title and the team's third in a row. The men's team is on the verge of wrapping up the men's title. A win in Leipzig next weekend would ensure a men and women's Bundesliga double. Bayern women's team faces Werder Bremen in the German Cup final in Cologne on Thursday. Former heavyweight Turbine Potsdam was relegated from the Women's Bundesliga on Friday with a 3-1 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
