Perrie Edwards reveals her agoraphobia 'got so bad she could barely leave the house' last year as she opens up on her crippling anxiety
Perrie Edwards has revealed her agoraphobia 'got so bad she could barely leave the house' last year in a candid new interview. The 32-year-old singer detailed her crippling anxiety with the Telegraph and said she struggles more being at home then on stage. 'When I'm on stage being a pop star I'm fully in my element: brave and empowered', Perrie explained. 'But as soon as I'm back home behind closed doors, that's when the anxiety kicks in and I'm just me again.' She added: 'I can't help but catastrophise about the everyday things that ought to be easy, like getting in my car and driving to London. 'At the end of last year my agoraphobia got so bad I could barely leave the house'. Agoraphobia involves fearing and avoiding places or situations that might cause panic and feelings of being trapped, helpless or embarrassed. You may fear an actual or upcoming situation. Earlier this year, Perrie admitted she fears she 'might die' as she opened up about her ongoing battle with panic disorder. The former Little Mix star revealed she finds it difficult to spend time alone, fearing she could suffer a life-threatening panic attack without anyone around to help. In an interview on Alison Hammond 's Big Weekend, Perrie invited the presenter into her home and spoke openly about how anxiety has affected her everyday life. Perrie said: 'I've developed panic disorder. So it's the fear of having a panic attack. A few years ago, I started suffering from severe panic attacks. 'I then developed a fear of having one again because I was like, if I'm on my own and have a panic attack, I might die, and nobody will be here to help.' She candidly added: 'That's why I'm never on my own. Never. I'm always with somebody. I don't like the feeling of feeling like I'm gonna die.' She is currently promoting her new song If He Wanted To He Would, which she announced on Instagram this week. Perrie welcomed son Axel in 2021 with her partner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The pair announced their engagement in 2022. She recently recalled the moment she told Alex that she loved him for the first time early in their romance. Appearing on the Capital Evening show with Jimmy Hill, she revealed how she stumbled over the romantic admission. She said: 'In my real life I can never say exactly what I mean... but I feel like in my music it's different. I remember the first time I told Alex I loved him, I was on a night out with the [Little Mix] girls and they were gearing me up - and for some reason I had a pan, right? 'I had a frying pan because Alex told me he liked pancakes so I went out of my way to buy a pan, but we had promo. 'So I'm on a night out, with a frickin' frying pan thinking, 'I'm gonna make his dreams come true, I'm gonna make him pancakes in the morning.' The singer went on: 'I remember saying to the girls, 'I think I love him... but I think he loves me too' and the girls were like, "Then just tell him". They geared me up within an inch of life and I was raring to go.' But when it came to the big moment, the singer admitted that she was 'speechless'. She continued: 'I couldn't find the words, I couldn't articulate myself, I was like panicking... my heartbeat was in my head. And I just went, "I think I'm falling in love with you", so aggressively.' After managing to get her words out, she revealed that Alex said he was in love with her too.

Little Mix star Perrie: ‘If I'm naked it's because I want to be naked'
'I wouldn't know where to start with that one!' flinches Perrie Edwards when I ask what she makes of Bonnie Blue, the porn star who claimed to have sex with 1,057 men in a single day in an attempt to set a world record. The former Little Mix singer wrestles an expression of horror into one of neutrality before calmly reminding me that 'I'm not one to judge'. Although newspaper readers lap up celebrities' takes on current controversies, it can feel cruel asking them to put their opinions on the record. Unlike in a normal conversation – where you can think aloud and change your mind later – giving the 'wrong' answer to a journalist can be career ending for a pop star, retweeted ad infinitum online. So I feel for the warm, likeable Edwards. The 32-year-old from South Shields says she's 'knees deep' in childcare and redecorating while also preparing to release her debut solo album. She shudders at the thought of 'awkward conversations, conflict and confrontations', so much so that – even after 13 years of relentless restyling for the cameras – she still can't muster the courage to tell a hairdresser she's unhappy with a cut. Her publicist has given advance warning that she will not discuss her former bandmate Jesy Nelson with me today; they haven't spoken since Nelson walked out of Little Mix in 2020. However, Edwards remains close to Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall. 'My agoraphobia got so bad I could barely leave the house' She has been open about her 'crippling' anxiety – still evident when I raise tricky subjects with her today. 'When I'm on stage being a pop star I'm fully in my element: brave and empowered,' she explains. 'But as soon as I'm back home behind closed doors, that's when the anxiety kicks in and I'm just me again.' Despite having 'quite a thick skin when it comes to online comments about my appearance or my clothes', Edwards says she can't help but 'catastrophise about the everyday things that ought to be easy, like getting in my car and driving to London. At the end of last year my agoraphobia got so bad I could barely leave the house'. Looking back, Edwards says anxiety has been an issue for her since childhood. Video calling from the walk-in wardrobe of the home she shares with her partner, the former England footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and their three-year-old son Axel, she recalls the nerves she felt auditioning for The X Factor in 2011, aged just 17. 'My mam said: 'If you're lucky, they'll put you in a group'. And I said: 'Oh, I do hope so!'' She smiles, and hugs her elbows as if giving her younger, pre-fame self a hug. 'I was painfully shy. I would freeze up if I had to speak to people. I knew I could sing, but I had no confidence. And I'm still working on that.' The race for solo success Within weeks of her audition, the talent show's svengalis had dropped Edwards into quartet Little Mix, whose sweet and sparky harmonies saw them hailed by Gary Barlow as 'the best girl band that's ever been on X Factor '. Despite being 'underdogs', they won the competition. Over the next decade, hits including Wings (2012), Black Magic (2015), Shout Out To My Ex (2016) and Heartbreak Anthem (2021) would see Little Mix become the first girl group to spend more than 100 weeks in the UK Top 10, selling over 75 million albums (and amassing 15 billion streams) around the world. They were the second most successful act to emerge from the show after One Direction (whose Zayn Malik Edwards would date from 2011-2015). After Little Mix went on hiatus in 2022, the race began for solo success. Nelson went first, dropping the single Boyz in 2021, which was savaged by critics. The video – in which the white-skinned Nelson appeared to have darkened her complexion – saw her accused of cultural appropriation and 'blackfishing'. Nelson responded, saying she hadn't intended to cause offence and that her deep tan was the result of a pre-shoot holiday to Antigua rather than fake tan. The other girls have since released more warmly received solo work: Thirlwall's Angel of My Dreams was nominated for Single of the Year at the Brit Awards, while Edwards' Forget About Us (written by Ed Sheeran) broke into the Top 10 in the UK. But by the end of last year, Edwards felt her anxiety spiralling out of control. 'I was in the studio thinking: 'I need to write a hit! I need to write a hit today!' The music industry is so competitive and I felt I was starting from scratch. It's a pressure cooker in which you're constantly being compared to everybody else and I just couldn't find a sound that I believed in…' Edwards admits that she struggled to carve out a solo identity. 'Jade knew, from the get-go, what she wanted to do, how she wanted to sound and the audience she was aiming for. But I didn't know and you cannot just pluck those answers out of thin air…' She shakes out her crinkly blonde curls and assumes a faux arrogance: ''D'you know what? I'm going to be an emo star! I'm gonna be a rock star!'' She laughs. 'That wasn't how it worked for me.' 'I was raised to think footballers were wrong 'uns' The first single from her debut album is released this week, and is a punchy blast of girl power pop called If He Wanted To He Would, sung from the perspective of a woman telling a friend that her boyfriend isn't treating her well. Without referring directly to Malik – who Edwards has previously claimed ended their four-year relationship by text message, which he denies – she says she wishes one of her friends had been honest enough to tell her when she was being treated badly in the past. 'I never had that,' she reflects. 'I wish my friends had sat me down and said: 'Perrie, he is no good. He is doing this and that and it's bad. We get that you love him but he isn't good for you and you need to get out'.' She admits to wariness when she first began dating Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2016. 'I never planned on dating a footballer,' she says. 'I thought after my past, all the s--- I went through, that I would end up with somebody normal, somebody who worked in an office, or a bricklayer. Not somebody from my industry. I was raised to think footballers were wrong 'uns, that they'll cheat on you. I knew people would have had no sympathy for me'. Her family, too, had concerns, until 'they met him and said: 'Oh! Now we feel awful'. He's the sweetest, most funny and genuine person'. While her former bandmate Thirlwell has become somewhat of a political and cultural activist – expressing her contempt for Reform UK on stage at Glastonbury, and openly advocating for LGBTQ+ rights – Edwards is happier to stay out of current affairs. 'The best thing is for women to have a choice. If you want to be political on stage, be political! If you want to keep away from that s--- and focus on other things then do that!' She's not bothered by comments about skimpy stage gear either. 'If I'm naked, it's because I want to be naked. It's not because there's a man whispering in my ear that sex sells.' She's comfortably into her stride by the time we end our call. 'I don't think women should have to go through a tick box checklist: am I political enough? Am I 'proud and sexy' enough? Am I covering up enough?' She shrugs. 'We're not going to satisfy everybody anyway. So you have to do you and f--- everybody else!'

Another "clue" that left fans thinking the man on the other end of the call was Zayn was because he mentioned a friend called Harry who wanted "booty". At the time of the rumours swirling, Zayn did not address them. But 13 years on, Tricia Corona has claimed she was the woman on the phone and detailed her version of events. Taking to TikTok to describe meeting Zayn and the rest of the boys at a One Direction event at a Walmart store, she recalled: "We're standing in line and Zayn's making eyes at me." She then explained how her pals told her to give Zayn her number. "I answer and you can hear all of them yelling and giggling and talking," she alleged. "I say hello and they don't say anything and hang up," she went on. Tricia then claimed that the prank call happened an "absurd amount of times". But then she allegedly got a call from Zayn at midnight asking her to join him at his hotel in Philadelphia. "It was not funny at the time," she said, adding how Zayn had "his own stuff going on". Tricia added: "And yes he is a celebrity and all that but he is still very much a person and I didn't want to throw him under the bus like that. One Direction fan caught up in Zayn Malik 'cheating' scandal finally breaks her silence on their night together - 13 years after leaked footage of their 'booty call' went viral
An American makeup artist has claimed she is the One Direction fan who was caught up in one of Zayn Malik 's cheating scandals. In 2012, an audio clip of a man inviting a group of women up to his hotel room went viral when fans claimed it was Zayn - who was dating Perrie Edwards at the time. Fans believed the Northern man on the phone was Bradford-born Zayn as he referenced a friend called Harry wanting 'booty' and also told the woman to tell hotel staff she was called Crystabel Riley - the name of the band's makeup artist. Zayn - who was accused of infidelity several times during his relationship with Perrie - did not address the rumours at the time. Now, 13 years later, Tricia Corona has claimed she was the woman on the phone and detailed her version of events, taking to TikTok to describe meeting Zayn at a One Direction fan event at a Walmart. She began: 'We're standing in line and Zayn's making eyes at me.' Tricia said her friends urged her to give him her number, so she continued: 'Like the hoochie that I am - or that I was I should say because I'm a happily married woman now - I wrote my number down and I stuck it right in my bra.' She claimed that when she got to the front of the line, Zayn told her 'I like your jubblies [breasts]', adding: 'I pulled my number right out of my dress, slid it across the table and said "if you wanna hang out later - call me". 'I saw him say to Harry [Styles] "put it in your pocket", so that was the meet and greet.' Tricia claimed that when she and her friends were driving back home she received a phone call from a British number. 'I answer and you can hear all of them yelling and giggling and talking,' she said. 'I say hello and they don't say anything and hang up.' She claimed that this prank kept on occurring an 'absurd amount of times', until she got a phone call from Zayn at midnight asking her to join him at his hotel in Philadelphia. Tricia said she agreed and she and her friends began the 1.5 hour drive back. 'He's calling me every two minutes "where are you? How far away are you? You have to be quicker - you have to get here fast because we do have to leave"', she claimed. 'We finally get to Philly and he calls and he's like "we left, we had to go, I told you. We're going to New York City why don't you come meet us there?" Tricia then claimed Louis Tomlinson called her to say: 'don't shoot the messenger, our tour manager has put his foot down and he says no girls back to the hotel tonight'. Still keen to meet the group, Tricia text Zayn saying: 'If you want to rebel against your babysitter tonight, let me know and we'll still come', to which he allegedly replied: 'f**k the babysitter, come anyway'. Tricia and her friends then drove to New York, arriving at roughly 2.30am, where she claims Zayn told her to tell hotel staff she was their makeup artist and come up to his room. Explaining why she didn't speak out at the time, Tricia insisted that no NDA was involved but that her mother had heard the leaked audio and was upset. 'It was not funny at the time,' she mused. 'Also he [Zayn] had his own stuff going on. 'And yes he is a celebrity and all that but he is still very much a person and I didn't want to throw him under the bus like that. 'So you can use your imagination I guess about what happened when I got up there. 'That's the story of Crystabel Riley.' In a second video, she clarified that she didn't know who had leaked the audio footage, admitting: 'I have an inkling... who fu***ing cares at this point.' MailOnline has contacted Zayn's representatives for comment. WHAT WAS SAID IN THE LEAKED 2012 PHONE CALL? MAN: You know when you come in the hotel, walk straight in, don't get involved with the people outside, the fans... If they ask who you are you say your name is Crystabel Riley. Come up to the 17th floor. 'Get straight in the lift and come up, how far away are you? 20 minutes? Harry's saying you'll have to be a bit quicker than that, 15 minutes is good. WOMAN: Tell Harry he has to wait MAN: 'If Harry wants booty he has to wait, did you say?' WOMAN: '[Laughs] Tell Harry to calm down he'll get it in 20 minutes!' During his four-year romance with Perrie, Zayn was plagued with several rumours of infidelity. In 2013, Australian waitress Courtney Webb claimed she enjoyed a night of passion with the singer after he claimed he was single. After sharing pictures of Zayn in bed, she told The Sun: 'He's an absolute s**t. How dare he - not only to me but to Perrie?' She then added that she believed Zayn has strayed on more than one occasion, saying: 'I definitely don't think it's the first time he's done this. 'I feel sorry for Perrie - she doesn't know this is going on. It's wrong and it has to stop.' Two years later, Swedish model, Martina Olsson claimed that Zayn cheated on Perrie with her while One Direction toured in Thailand, telling her: 'I want you now.' The club promoter insisted that she bedded the former 1D star twice after partying together at the same nightclub where he was pictured cuddling Essex girl Lauren Richardson. Speaking to The Sun On Sunday, Martina said: 'He didn't mention anything to me about having a fiancée. He was really flirtatious'. She claimed that she went to the star's villa, where he asked her to take a shower with him before one thing led to another. Martina said: 'Straight away when we were in the bathroom he started kissing me. He picked me up and said, 'I want you now,' and carried me to the bed.' Then next night saw her partying with the band at the nightclub again, but this time Zayn reportedly had his eye on Lauren as Martina claimed that the pair disappeared for 30 minutes while at the band's villa. But she added that she bedded the singer again after he paid for Lauren to leave in a taxi at 5am. After a picture of Zayn hugging Lauren went viral he returned to his home with Perrie in the UK and tweeted: 'I'm 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f**ks in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x.' He then announced he was leaving One Direction's On the Road Again World Tour due to stress. Days later, in March 2015, he announced he was quitting the band, and five months later, he split from Perrie. Zayn went on to date supermodel Gigi Hadid, but the on/off couple split for good in late 2021 after he was involved in a row with Gigi's mother Yolanda, where the singer was charged with four counts of harassment. He pleaded no contest to the charges over allegedly pushing Yolanda into a dresser and calling her a 'f*****g Dutch sl*t' in September 2021. Zayn and Gigi now amicably co-parent their four-year-old daughter Khai.
