Machine Gun Kelly claims he turned down an audition for Sinners – here's why
Machine Gun Kelly has claimed he turned down an audition for box office smash Sinners. The 35-year-old singer said that he was supposed to be in the 2025 thriller movie, directed by Ryan Coogler, during Thursday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show. 'The vampire, they had me set up to do the audition, it's [for] the one that's in the house, so he's the second vampire,' he explained. He then cited the reason why he turned the opportunity down, claiming: 'In the audition, he has to say the 'n-word' and I wouldn't do it.' Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, auditioned for Bert, who gets turned into a vampire by Remmick (played by Jack O'Connell) in Sinners. Bert's wife, Joan, also gets bitten by Remmick and becomes a vampire. Ultimately, the role of Bert went to Peter Dreimanis. During The Pat McAfee Show, the 'Wild Boy' singer said that he's always had an interest in acting. 'I had a lot of aspirations to be in movies, but it just hasn't panned out that way,' Kelly said. 'I'm on universal time, though, so we'll see.' He described what universal timing meant, noting that the acting opportunities will come when it's right for him. 'The angels will put something in the works,' he added. 'Whenever they feel like it.' However, he acknowledged that he doesn't want to wait too long to book another movie role. 'I'd like to be in cinema while I still look young. I'd really like to be recruited into a movie while I still got looks,' Kelly quipped. Kelly started acting in 2014, with his first role in the romantic drama Beyond the Lights, where he played rapper Kid Culprit. However, he later noted that when in the acting business, he wants to go by his birth name, Colson Baker, which is what he did in the Western film, The Last Sun. 'I think it's more just out of respect for the art,' he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 about dropping his stage name for movie roles. Referring to the American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, he said: 'If you're looking at a Basquiat piece and you have feelings about him personally, is that fair to the art because of how you feel about him personally?" 'There's music and then there's movies. I don't feel like being Inception in a person,' he added, referring to the 2010 Christopher Nolan film. 'Like there's a character inside of a character inside of a character inside of a character. I'd rather it just be me playing a character in one world and then me playing a character in another world.'

MGK Reveals Why He Turned Down Role In Ryan Coogler's Sinners
Last Updated: MGK revealed his wish to act despite rejecting a role in Sinners, which later went to Peter Dreimanis. MGK, formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly, recently made a startling revelation about his aspirations to act in film and television. The American rapper, singer, songwriter and producer opened up about turning down a role in the Sinners, a horror film produced, written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Additionally, he stated that he passed over a few productions and also explained the reasons behind this. MGK appeared on one of the recent episodes of The Pat McAfee Show and confessed that he has huge aspirations to embark on the journey of acting. He said, 'It just hasn't panned out that way. I'm on universal timing, though, so we'll see." The Rap Devil singer then mentioned how he later realised that he could have been a part of those projects, instead of just turning down those offers. MGK Reveals He Was Supposed To Be In Sinners During his conversation, he revealed how the makers of Sinners were considering him for the role of Bert, who was later played by Peter Dreimanis after he rejected the part. The 35-year-old singer confessed, 'I mean, there's been plenty of movies that come out that I'm like, 'Ah, I was supposed to be in that.' Or, 'Oh, I did auditions for that.' Like Sinners, I was supposed to be in that." Why MGK Denied The Role Of Bert In Sinners Post denying the audition for the horror movie, the Wild Boy rapper thought that he could have easily been part of Ryan Coogler's box office hit. He also described that, however, his decision at that time was because he was required to say a racial slur. The role was ultimately played by Peter Dreimanis in Sinners, where the on-screen character gets married to Lola Kirke's Joan. Then, the two turn into vampires after a series of incidents leading up to that. Talking about the same, MGK said, 'The vampire — they had me set up to do the audition— it's the one that's in the house, so he's the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and eats the family," adding, 'In the audition, he has to say the 'n-word' and I wouldn't do it." MGK Is Still Eager To Act Despite his multiple denials, he says, 'I'd like to be in the cinema while I still look young," adding, 'Okay. All right. That was the message to Hollywood. I would like to be recruited into a movie while I still have some looks." Talking about Sinners, the movie hit the theatres on April 18, becoming one of the highest-grossing original films since the pandemic, according to Forbes. The horror film is currently streaming on HBO Max, Prime Video, Fandango At Home and Apple TV. Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown to start again, where a supernatural evil confronts them. The movie also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Peter Dreimanis, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. The musician, formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly, appeared on the Thursday, July 31, episode of The Pat McAfee Show, and revealed that he denied an audition for Ryan Coogler's box office hit after he saw he would be required to say a racial slur. The 35-year-old singer confessed to the host that he has 'a lot of aspirations to be in movies. It just hasn't panned out that way,' adding, 'I'm on universal timing, though, so we'll see.' MGK continued, 'I mean, there's there's been plenty of movies that come out that I'm like, 'Ah, I was supposed to be in that.' Or, 'Oh, I did auditions for that.' Like Sinners, I was supposed to be in that." The "Wild Boy" rapper considered auditioning for the role of Bert, who was ultimately played by Peter Dreimanis. The character is married to Lola Kirke's Joan, and the two become vampires after they unknowingly let mysterious vampire Remmick (Jack O'Connell) into their home. 'The vampire — they had me set up to do the audition— it's the one that's in the house, so he's the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and eats the family," MGK remembered. "In the audition, he has to say the 'n-word' and I wouldn't do it.' Set in 1932 Mississippi, identical twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, return to their hometown to leave their troubles behind and turn an abandoned mill into a blues nightclub. Backed by stolen money and joined by their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), the club's grand opening draws in more than just curious locals. Among the guests is Remmick, Bert and Joan, whose arrival turns the celebration into something far more sinister. Despite his decision to pass on the film, he told McAfee and his panel of guests that he's still eager to act in film and TV. "Hey, dude. I'd like to be in cinema while I still look young," he cheekily said directly to the camera, as McAfee added, "Okay. All right. That was the message to Hollywood." "I would really like to be recruited into a movie while I still got some looks," MGK reiterated, and McAfee declared, "We're part of an Oscar run here." Sinners premiered in theaters on April 18, earning $45.6 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. It reportedly made over $365 million in theaters, per Deadline, and became the highest-grossing original film since the pandemic, according to Forbes. The movie's wild success even knocked the popular A Minecraft Movie out of its top spot — and made history as the first horror in 35 years to receive an A from CinemaScore, a company that polls opening-night audiences.
