A father and son are alleged to have rammed a cousin's family's 4x4 as it drove down a country lane, killing a young four-year-old boy and seriously injuring his sister, it emerged today. Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, from Darenth, Kent, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court this morning charged with the murder of little Peter Maughan. The pair - who are understood to be related to the victims - spoke via link from Elmley prison only to confirm their names as their barristers discussed the case involving the death of last Sunday 1st June. Owen Maughan is said to have been driving a Ford pick-up truck as it smashed into another similar vehicle that was being driven by the boy's father Lovell Mohan in countryside near Dartford, Kent, No possible motive has yet emerged to explain the alleged deliberate collision. It is understood that both the accused are related to Peter's mum Hayley Maughan and the children with Owen being her first cousin. As well as facing a charge of murdering the four-year-old, Owen and Patrick Maughan are accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Peter's father Lovell Mohan, who remains in a critical condition in hospital due to his injuries. They are also charged with the attempted wounding with intent of Peter's baby sister, a one-year-old girl and their mother Hayley Maughan. Peter Maughan, four, was killed when a Ford Ranger he was travelling in with his father Lovell (pictured) and one-year-old sister was allegedly 'rammed' His Honour Judge Oliver Saxby remanded the defendants in custody until the following hearing – set for 7th July and warned them it was an 'important date', as they will be expected to enter a plea. Both father and son sat impassively in separate interview rooms at the jail on the Isle of Sheppey. Owen Maughan wore a sky-blue coloured shirt with an open neck. His father Patrick, wore a grey sweatshirt and had his arms folded throughout the short hearing. The police investigation into the case is ongoing with a forensic collision report expected to be completed shortly. Detectives continue to ask for witnesses to the fatal crash. A Kent Police spokeswoman said: 'Detectives continue to appeal for any witnesses to the collision which involved two grey Ford Rangers. Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, both from Hill Rise in Darenth, Kent, appeared at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court on Wednesday over the death of four-year-old Peter Maughan. They are charged with his murder, as well as causing grievous bodily harm to Peter's father Lovell Mahon, 24, who is in a critical condition in hospital. Both men are also charged with the attempted wounding with intent of Peter's sister, one-year-old Annarica Maughan, and the mother of the children, Hayley Maughan. It is understood that Hayley Maughan is the first cousin of Owen Maughan. The two men appeared separately in the dock wearing grey prison jumpers and spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and address. Peter Maughan was taken to hospital with his father, Lovell, 24, and one-year-old sister after two pick-up trucks collided in New Barn Road at 9.30pm on Sunday. Patrick Maughan, 53 and Owen Maughan, 27, both from Darenth in Dartford were arrested on Monday and subsequently charged with murder. Tributes have been paid online to the child who was affectionately known as Peter Rabbit. Hundreds of comments were left by friends and family who offered their thoughts and prayers to those who survived and remain in hospital. Kent Police said Lovell Maughan was in 'critical condition', while his daughter had received only 'minor injuries'. Patrick and Owen Maughan have also been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted wounding with intent after the collision between the two grey Ford Rangers. The attempted wounding with intent applies to Annarica Maughan, Peter's sister, and Hayley Maughan, who is the children's mother. It is understood that Hayley Maughan is the first cousin of Owen Maughan. Patrick and Owen Maughan appeared at Sevenoaks magistrates' court on Wednesday. The two suspects were dealt with in short, separate hearings, speaking only to confirm their identities. The four-year-old boy who was killed in a horror crash between two pickup trucks has been pictured and named, as his father remains critically ill in hospital. Heartfelt and emotional tributes have been paid online to Peter Maughan, affectionately known as Peter Rabbit. Medics fought to save the little boy's life following the smash on New Barn Road, Dartford, on Sunday night, but he was pronounced dead in hospital. His 24-year-old father, Lovell, remains fighting for his life while his one-year-old sister who was injured in the smash has now been discharged. The young family had been travelling in a Ford Ranger when it was involved in a crash with another Ford Ranger at around 9.30pm. Officers yesterday arrested a 27-year-old man from Darenth and a 53-year-old man from Swanley in connection with the incident. They both remain in custody while enquiries continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision. Grieving friends and family have flooded social media with tributes for Peter, who they described as 'golden' One person wrote: 'Rest in peace Peter Rabbit please everyone keep them in your prayers it's a cruel world.' While another said 'this is the saddest thing I've heard' as they said they had never seen Peter without his mother by his side. 'Keep her and her husband in prayer and her beautiful little baby boy may you watch over her and him I can't imagine what she's going through,' another tribute read. 'Can not believe I'm writing this RIP Peter rabbit. [He] was the kindest little boy loving child,' another friend added. Detectives are appealing for any information from people who may have witnessed the collision.
