Ease congestion, link key hubs: How Bengaluru Metro's yellow line will benefit commuters
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited yellow line of the Bengaluru metro on Sunday, connecting RV Road in the south to Bommasandra in the city's industrial belt. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Yellow Line of Namma Metro in Bengaluru on Sunday.(DPR PMO) With 16 stations and a route length of over 19 km, this new line under the Phase-2 project will change the way commuters travel every day. The project, worth around ₹7,160 crore, increases the operational metro network in Bengaluru to over 96 km. Links multiple metro corridors One of the key benefits of the new line is its connectivity. The Yellow line is linked to the Green Line at RV Road, allowing the commuters from south Bengaluru to head north or west without hassle. It will also provide interchanges at Jayadeva Hospital and the Central Silk Board station, further connecting it to other metro lines. Ease traffic congestion The Yellow line will also help in easing traffic congestion on key corridors like Hosur Road, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City Junction. With the new line, the Bengaluru metro will expand its network to over 96 km, catering to a larger population in the city. Over 6 lakh commuters to benefit Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje has said that the inauguration of the yellow metro line will enable over 6 lakh people to commute daily through the new line, ANI reported. While speaking on the ongoing road traffic congestion, she said it was even difficult for even an ambulance to reach its destination. This metro line will help in linking the key hubs in South Bengaluru, cutting down the travel time for commuters. According to a report by News18, the travel time between central Bengaluru and Electronics City takes up to 2 hours during rush hour, which can also extend during accidents or traffic snarls due to rain. State govt prioritising north Andhra projects: Nimmala
Vijayawada: The state government is making concerted efforts to expedite pending irrigation projects in the North Andhra region, aiming at resolving long-standing drinking and irrigation water issues. This commitment was articulated by Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu following a review meeting held today at the camp office here. Minister Ramanaidu stated that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has specifically directed officials to prioritise these projects to ensure water security for the people of North Andhra. He announced that the Chief Minister himself would conduct a special review meeting on North Andhra projects next week to finalize their prioritization and development strategy. Ramanaidu highlighted that during the 2014-2019 TDP government's tenure numerous projects were sanctioned and largely completed for the benefit of North Andhra. However, he lamented that the subsequent YSRCP government, which came to power in 2019, neglected these crucial works. 'It's unfortunate that the previous government abandoned works like the Vamsadhara Stage-2, Phase-2, and Thotapalli Barrage, even though 90 percent of their construction was complete,' Ramanaidu asserted, accusing the YSRCP of significant betrayal to the North Andhra region over the past five years. He affirmed that the current coalition government, since assuming office last year, has been actively working to bring all these pending projects back on track. He expressed confidence that their completion would comprehensively address the drinking and irrigation water challenges faced by the region. During the review meeting, Ramanaidu specifically assessed the progress of balance works for the Vamsadhara-Nagavali and Nagavali-Champavathi interlinking projects, enquiring about their current status from officials. He alsosought updates on accelerating works for the Hiramandalam Lift, Madduvalasa Stage-2, and Janjavathi reservoir. Furthermore, Ramanaidu delved into the impediments causing delays and halts in projects funded by JICA, including the Andra Reservoir, Raivada, Peddankalam, Peddagadda, and Vattigedda. The minister instructed officials and engineers concerned to prepare comprehensive reports ahead of the Chief Minister's review. These reports should detail the prioritisation of each project, estimated completion timelines, and other pertinent information. The review was attended by irrigation advisor Venkateswara Rao, ENC Narasimhamurthy, chief engineers, superintending engineers of various projects, and other senior officials.

8 months on, no financial nod yet; installation of 2.7k cameras held up in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: The installation of 2,722 CCTV cameras at 258 locations across the city — under Phase-2 — has been delayed due to delay in financial months after eligible bidders were shortlisted, the second phase of the city's surveillance and adaptive traffic management project, estimated at Rs 160 crore, remains stalled as GMDA continues to await the green light from a high-powered committee. Under state rules, any infrastructure project above Rs 10 crore must be cleared by the works purchase during GMDA's 10th authority meeting in June 2022, the Phase-2 plan was meant to enhance traffic regulation and boost urban safety. So far, GMDA has installed 1,200 cameras at 218 locations in the city and Manesar under Phase-1, which was completed in Aug and security clearly don't seem high on the govt's priority list. That is why despite administrative approvals and the tender process, the Phase-2 project has run into yet another bureaucratic hurdle — the lack of financial approval — after being held up for more than a year pending police clearance, which finally came in Oct 2023. According to GMDA officials, once the tender is finally awarded, it would take another 18 months for Phase-2 to be selected company will also be responsible for maintaining all equipment and bearing operational expenses for five years.A tender was issued in March 2024 and five firms were found technically eligible by Oct, but the file hasn't moved further. Since Oct last year, several other infrastructure projects for the city received the govt nod, but the CCTV rollout was left out.A GMDA official said, "The technical process is complete and we have submitted the case for placing before the high-powered works purchase committee. We are now awaiting govt approval."The indefinite delay in implementing Phase-2 has cast a shadow over the third phase of the surveillance project, which aimed to further strengthen the city's public safety camera network. The Phase-3 was approved by the state govt in July last year. The project, estimated at Rs 422 crore, proposes the installation of 10,000 more cameras at 2,000 additional locations, including public places, high-footfall areas, community spaces and govt buildings under this has now said that the requirement for CCTV Phase-3 will be reworked based on actual coverage in Phases 1 and 2 and inputs from the concerned department, after Phase-2 is implemented. A GMDA official said, "We can only proceed with the Phase-3 planning once Phase-2 is implemented. This will give us an idea of how and where additional coverage is required."In Nov last year, GMDA planned to hire an agency to conduct a citywide survey to identify the necessary infrastructure and pinpoint suitable camera locations. But that too was shelved. In Feb this year, the authority cancelled the tender for hiring the agency.
