State govt prioritising north Andhra projects: Nimmala

Hans India6 days ago
Vijayawada: The state government is making concerted efforts to expedite pending irrigation projects in the North Andhra region, aiming at resolving long-standing drinking and irrigation water issues. This commitment was articulated by Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu following a review meeting held today at the camp office here.
Minister Ramanaidu stated that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has specifically directed officials to prioritise these projects to ensure water security for the people of North Andhra.
He announced that the Chief Minister himself would conduct a special review meeting on North Andhra projects next week to finalize their prioritization and development strategy.
Ramanaidu highlighted that during the 2014-2019 TDP government's tenure numerous projects were sanctioned and largely completed for the benefit of North Andhra.
However, he lamented that the subsequent YSRCP government, which came to power in 2019, neglected these crucial works. 'It's unfortunate that the previous government abandoned works like the Vamsadhara Stage-2, Phase-2, and Thotapalli Barrage, even though 90 percent of their construction was complete,' Ramanaidu asserted, accusing the YSRCP of significant betrayal to the North Andhra region over the past five years.
He affirmed that the current coalition government, since assuming office last year, has been actively working to bring all these pending projects back on track. He expressed confidence that their completion would comprehensively address the drinking and irrigation water challenges faced by the region.
During the review meeting, Ramanaidu specifically assessed the progress of balance works for the Vamsadhara-Nagavali and Nagavali-Champavathi interlinking projects, enquiring about their current status from officials.
He alsosought updates on accelerating works for the Hiramandalam Lift, Madduvalasa Stage-2, and Janjavathi reservoir.
Furthermore, Ramanaidu delved into the impediments causing delays and halts in projects funded by JICA, including the Andra Reservoir, Raivada, Peddankalam, Peddagadda, and Vattigedda.
The minister instructed officials and engineers concerned to prepare comprehensive reports ahead of the Chief Minister's review. These reports should detail the prioritisation of each project, estimated completion timelines, and other pertinent information.
The review was attended by irrigation advisor Venkateswara Rao, ENC Narasimhamurthy, chief engineers, superintending engineers of various projects, and other senior officials.

Jagan blames govt for mango farmers' plight

Tirupati: YSRCP president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the NDA government in the state for allegedly driving the farmers into severe distress. He visited the Bangarupalem market yard in the Puthalapattu constituency of Chittoor district on Wednesday to express solidarity with mango farmers, who, he said, were in a helpless situation as their produce was not fetching even the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Despite heavy police restrictions, thousands of YSRCP supporters and farmers gathered at the market yard, creating a tense atmosphere throughout the day. Interacting with the farmers, Jagan questioned the government's inaction over the mounting crisis. 'If farmers are not in distress, why have thousands gathered here to voice their concerns?' he said during a media interaction. He alleged that the government had turned a blind eye to the ongoing agrarian crisis and pointed out that not a single crop was being procured at MSP under the current regime. 'This visit is meant to wake up a sleeping government. Agriculture has been neglected under the NDA, and farmers are bearing the brunt,' he said. Drawing comparisons with his party's previous tenure, Jagan recalled that mangoes were purchased at Rs 22 to 29 per kg under the YSRCP government. Even the Centre, he said, was procuring mangoes from Karnataka at Rs 16 per kg. In contrast, the state government was offering just Rs 2 per kg to local farmers. 'This is outrageous. Farmers are in tears. They're not even getting Rs 12 per kg now. The government and mango factories are colluding to exploit them,' he alleged. Jagan further questioned Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, asking how many factories were actually paying Rs 8 per kg, as claimed by the government, and how many farmers had received the promised Rs 4 per kg subsidy. He also criticised the breakdown of agricultural support infrastructure, saying input subsidies and investment assistance were not reaching farmers, while key institutions like Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) and agri-labs had become defunct. 'Every support system created for farmers has collapsed,' he said. Demanding immediate procurement of the mango crop, Jagan urged the state to step in and provide urgent relief. 'YSRCP will stand by every farmer and fight for their rights,' he assured. Referring to the security clampdown during his visit, Jagan alleged that the state deployed nearly 2,000 police personnel to block farmers from meeting him. 'Farmers were treated like rowdy-sheeters. Around 1,200 were detained. Some were even subjected to lathi-charge,' he said, strongly condemning what he called the breakdown of law and order and the suppression of rural voices. He warned that the present situation stood in stark contrast to the farmer-friendly governance under the previous YSRCP regime and vowed that his party would intensify its agitation if the government failed to act.

Jagan's visit a grand success despite police repressive measures

Tirupati: Despite police repressive measures, restrictions and obstacles, farmers turned out in big numbers proving ex-CM and YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's visit to Bangarupalyam on Wednesday was a thumping success, said senior party leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy. 'Notices were issued to our leaders, direct and indirect threats were also given to deter people attending the meeting of Jagan Mohan Reddy who came to reassure mango farmers who were facing unprecedented crisis due to lack of remunerative price to mangoes,' Karunakar Reddy said at a media conference here. He said the YSRCP president's visit has succeeded in bringing pressure on the government to do justice to mango farmers. Reddy alleged that though the government declared a support price of Rs 4 per kg of mangoes to farmers not even single rupee was paid to them, he alleged and vowed that the YSRCP will continue its fight till the mango farmers get fair price. Mayor Dr R Sirisha and Chevireddy Harshith Reddy were present.
