Marcos cites World Bank role in PH infra, climate change mitigation

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday acknowledged the role of the World Bank when it comes to supporting Philippine infrastructure projects and addressing climate change. ''For eight decades, you have stood with us in confronting our most pressing challenges—from building critical infrastructure to boosting preparedness against climate change and natural disasters,'' Marcos said during the launch and turnover of the World Bank Group Philippines Country Partnership Framework (CPF) 2025-2031. ''Beyond financial assistance, you have provided deep technical expertise, championed the most effective practices, and reignited a collaborative spirit that pushes us to deliver real, lasting impact for Filipinos,'' Marcos added. Marcos said the CPF lays out a clear and strategic path for the next six years. "It echoes the commitments that I shared yesterday, during the State of the Nation Address: better access to healthcare, stronger support for our students, more jobs and livelihood opportunities for our people,'' Marcos said. ''To sustain our gains, we are also prioritizing disaster preparedness throughout the construction of more evacuation centers, modern early warning systems, and faster, more coordinated response efforts,'' he added. In a separate press release, Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan expressed deep appreciation for the World Bank's continued support, highlighting the CPF's strong alignment with the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028 and the country's long-term vision, the AmBisyon Natin 2040. 'We welcome the World Bank's Country Partnership Framework for 2025-2031, which supports our national vision as articulated in the Ambisyon Natin 2040. This framework reinforces our shared commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth by focusing on high-impact interventions promoting high-quality job generation, human capital development, climate resilience, good governance, and digital transformation,' he said. The CPF seeks to advance human capital development in the Philippines through improved health and education. It will also aid the country generate more and better jobs by supporting policy and regulatory reforms that boost competitiveness, modernize agriculture, and expand digital infrastructure. Further, the CPF will help build resilience to climate change and other shocks by supporting the government's modernized Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and expanding adaptive social protection to cover 12.5 million beneficiaries. In line with this, the framework will help 13 million people become more resilient to climate and disaster risks through improved infrastructure, climate-smart agriculture, and enhanced disaster risk financing. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
