Watch: Possible meteor spotted outside Lydenburg
Video footage recently sent to Steelburger/Lydenburg News shows a possible meteorite sighting just outside Lydenburg in Mpumalanga.
In the footage, the town can be seen in the background as a bright light begins to form, suggesting a possible chondrite – a type of stony meteorite that is one of the most common kinds found on Earth.
In the clip, the light burns brightly in the night sky before disappearing.
The video was captured on Sunday, August 3, just before 03:00, by Phoenix K9 and Mounted Security Squad.
According to The Conversation, comet or chondrite dust particles enter Earth's atmosphere at speeds of about 59km per second. As they do, they burn up, creating the bright flashes we call meteors.
