Video footage recently sent to Steelburger/Lydenburg News shows a possible meteorite sighting just outside Lydenburg in Mpumalanga.
In the footage, the town can be seen in the background as a bright light begins to form, suggesting a possible chondrite – a type of stony meteorite that is one of the most common kinds found on Earth.
In the clip, the light burns brightly in the night sky before disappearing.
The video was captured on Sunday, August 3, just before 03:00, by Phoenix K9 and Mounted Security Squad.
According to The Conversation, comet or chondrite dust particles enter Earth's atmosphere at speeds of about 59km per second. As they do, they burn up, creating the bright flashes we call meteors.

Grade 3 learners at Crawford International Lonehill Preparatory proved that innovation has no age limit as they presented a showcase of practical inventions designed to solve everyday problems. As part of their Inquiry-Based Learning curriculum, learners identified challenges they face at home and in their communities and developed imaginative solutions, from eco-friendly devices that help reduce household waste to safety gadgets and time-saving tools. Chelyne Schroeder of Crawford International Lonehill said, 'This project truly ignites a spirit of curiosity and problem-solving in our students. We see them identifying issues in their daily lives and coming up with solutions with so much creativity and confidence.' Beyond the inventions themselves, learners were encouraged to present and pitch their ideas to an audience, helping them build communication skills and confidence while learning the value of collaboration and feedback. Summerhill's science fair ignites young minds with innovation

Excitement and energy filled the air at Summerhill School SA on July 11, as Grade 2, 4, and 6 learners showcased their scientific curiosity and creativity at the school's annual Science Fair Exhibition. The result was a vibrant display of innovation—ranging from imaginative models and thoughtful research to engaging, interactive experiments. The school's quad buzzed with activity as parents, teachers, and fellow learners from other grades visited the various exhibits, asking questions and applauding the young presenters. The learners, in turn, beamed with pride as they explained their processes and findings—gaining confidence, public speaking skills, and a strong sense of accomplishment along the way. Event coordinators Vanessa Singh and Jessica Roughton described the fair as a joyful success. 'Learners also enjoyed a warm cup of hot chocolate, which added to the sense of celebration on a cold winter's day.
