Three Melaka Pink Bus drivers suspended for traffic offences

MELAKA: Three 'Pink Bus' stage bus drivers have been suspended from work over various traffic offences, including causing the death of a motorist recently. Melaka Works, Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the drivers, all in their 30s, were suspended for an unspecified period until investigations into their infractions are completed and faced the risk of losing their jobs if they were found guilty. The stern action was taken as a reminder to stage bus drivers to comply with traffic rules and regulations, he added. 'One of them was involved in an accident that caused the death of another motorist while another had overtook other vehicles before making a dangerous U-turn... their actions were recorded by other motorists and went viral on social media. 'The state government will not compromise with dangerous and reckless driving or behaviour of bus drivers that endanger other motorists as it involves safety issues and the lives of others,' he told reporters after officiating the Melaka Road Transport Department's MyLesen (B2) programme driving licence presentation ceremony here today. He also revealed that he instructed management to review the old records of all 60 stage bus drivers to ensure that the 'Pink Bus' drivers could carry out their duties responsibly and project a positive image for the state. 'Before drivers are hired, they are tested and have their past records reviewed, but there is a possibility that some try to hide previous records to gain employment,' he said, adding that meetings with all stage bus drivers would be conducted in stages to identify any related issues.

People's Bus Service to extend hours during Ramadan in Karachi

The Sindh government has announced an extension in Peoples Bus Service operating hours during Ramadan, with buses running until 1 AM from the 15th of the holy month. Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the extended hours would apply to key routes, including R1, R2, R3, R4, R9, R10, and EV1. He noted that the decision was taken to address the needs of Karachi residents who rely on public transport. "We understand the challenges faced by commuters during Ramadan," Memon stated. "This initiative aims to provide safer and more convenient travel options, especially after late-night shopping." He reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving public transport and urged citizens to take full advantage of the extended service hours. Moreover, earlier this week, the Sindh government announced a scheme to award free 'pink scooters' to women through a lottery system, aimed at empowering female commuters in the province, Express News reported on Thursday. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon unveiled the initiative during a press conference in Karachi, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting women's mobility. 'A driving licence is mandatory for women to participate in the scheme,' Memon said, adding that the lucky draw would be held at an open event. The initiative follows the provincial government's launch of the 'Pink Bus' service in 2023, dedicated to female passengers.

Sindh govt announces free 'pink scooters' for women

Listen to article The Sindh government has announced a scheme to award free 'pink scooters' to women through a lottery system, aimed at empowering female commuters in the province, Express News reported on Thursday. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon unveiled the initiative during a press conference in Karachi, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting women's mobility. 'A driving licence is mandatory for women to participate in the scheme,' Memon said, adding that the lucky draw would be held at an open event. The initiative follows the provincial government's launch of the 'Pink Bus' service in 2023, dedicated to female passengers. Memon also announced plans to introduce a 'pink taxi' service, with women drivers behind the wheel. The minister said the schemes aimed to promote women's independence and provide safe transportation options. Moreover, the minister announced that all vehicles in Sindh will be registered under a unified system. The announcement comes amid rising traffic-related casualties in the provincial capital, where more than 130 people have died and over 1,800 injured in accidents this year, according to reports. In comparison, nearly 500 fatalities were recorded in 2024. The spike in accidents has triggered protests, with angry mobs setting vehicles involved in collisions on fire. Memon said the Sindh government had formed a committee to address road safety concerns, while proceeds from auctioning number plates would be transferred to the provincial government. 'The decision will help streamline vehicle registration across the province,' Memon said at a press conference. He also criticised the federal government, claiming Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had promised 180 buses for Karachi but none were included in the federal budget for 2025. 'We will write a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to fulfil his promise,' Memon added. The minister announced the Sindh cabinet had approved the Dow Science Foundation's establishment and sanctioned additional buses for the province. The cabinet also approved the K-IV water project for Keenjhar Lake and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Line project.
