High-tech company unveils game-changing alternative to traditional rubber tires: 'Attests to the responsible management … from plantation to factory'
Tire company Pirelli turned heads after revealing a revolutionary new tire made mostly from plant-based and recycled materials, Interesting Engineering reported. The new Pirelli P Zero is the first standard-production tire "for the global market made with over 70% bio-based and recycled materials," according to a Pirelli press release. The 22-inch tires, designed specifically for Jaguar Land Rover, incorporate steel recycled from scrap metal, oils from end-of-life tires, silica derived from rice husks, and Forest Stewardship Council-certified natural rubber, Pirelli said. The tires also use bio-circular polymers made out of used cooking oil and plant-based plasticizers. All of these advancements significantly reduce the amount of dirty-fuel-based materials used in the tire but without compromising the tire's ultra-high-performance rating, according to Pirelli. The production, wear, and disposal of automobile tires take a significant, yet often overlooked, toll on public health and the environment. "Global dependence on tires produced from natural rubber and petroleum-based compounds, including plastics, represents a persistent and complex environmental problem with only partial and often-times, ineffective solutions," the EPA said in a risk assessment. The production and use of automobile tires produce heavy metals and other toxins that are released into the environment as "chemical cocktails," per the EPA. "Tire dust emitted during use is a major component of urban runoff and a source of unique and highly potent toxic substances, many of which are currently unknown or poorly described," the EPA risk assessment found. That Pirelli engineers have succeeded in developing an ultra-high-performance, 22-inch tire suitable for the luxury market while using 70% recycled and plant-based materials serves as proof that more environmentally friendly tires are possible. What factor would make you most likely to get an induction stove? Energy savings Faster cook time Cleaner air when cooking Government incentives Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. In 2021, Pirelli manufactured its first tire using Forest Stewardship Council-certified rubber, and the company has said that all of its European manufacturing facilities will be FSC-certified by 2026. "This certification attests to the responsible management of the natural rubber supply chain, from plantation to factory," Pirelli said in its press release. The new Pirelli P Zero will be available on select 22-inch Range Rover wheel options, the company said. A spin in the right direction While drivers tend to overlook tires until they need to be replaced, companies like Pirelli obsess over them. Constantly improving and iterating, Pirelli is now introducing a tire to market that features nearly three-quarters recycled components, suggesting that the future of high-performance tires can utilize used materials without compromising performance. The downside is that, at least for its first recycled tire, Pirelli is limiting production to a single tire size, which was developed specifically for a single vehicle. It was also developed as an OEM tire, and it's unclear whether Pirelli will produce them for the aftermarket. Pirelli P Zero tire — Source: Pirelli All about the 70% recycled Pirelli P Zero This new tire is part of Pirelli's commitment to making all natural rubber used in its European factories Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified by 2026. The tire maker previously released an FSC-certified tire in 2021. FSC certification is specific to the rubber used in the tire, which has to be certified as natural rubber and is an attestation that Pirelli exercised 'responsible management' of its natural rubber supply chain from plantation to production. In addition to FSC-certified rubber, the new P Zero utilizes recycled steel, which the company reclaimed in part from melted scrap metal. Rice husk-derived silica was also used in the P Zero, as the silica is a byproduct of rice production and is used in the P Zero's tread for enhanced handling in wet conditions. End-of-life tires were also included. To make the tires black, Pirelli used pyrolysis oil from scrap tires, which is obtained via a process of rapid heating and cooling that essentially extracts the oils from the used tires. The same pyrolysis oil derivative was used in the tire polymers. Finally, plant-based bio-resins help optimize dry and wet performance for the new P Zero. If you want the new P Zero, you'll need a Range Rover Developed for JLR (Jaguar Land Rover), Pirelli states that the new tire will only be available in a 22-inch wheel size. The mostly-recycled P Zero will 'initially be available on selected' Range Rover vehicles, but it's unclear whether the tire will be an optional add-on for buyers or if it will be standard for Range Rovers with 22-inch wheels. It's not the first collaboration between JLR and Pirelli, either. In 2024, JLR equipped some of its cars with Pirelli tires that contained 110 percent FSC-certified natural rubber. The new P Zeros will feature FSC markings and a 'distinctive logo' denoting that the tires contain more than 50 percent bio-based recycled materials, which is verified by the third-party certification body Bureau Veritas. Range Rover Evoque — Source: Jaguar Land Rover Final thoughts There's no doubt Pirelli ran this tire through its paces, both virtually in its design and development phase as well as in real-world testing. If any company has mastered high-performance tire manufacturing, it's Pirelli. Even so, it's unclear how recycled materials will hold up over the long term, but if all goes well, we could be looking at a breakthrough in the future of tires. 5G-Connected Tires Being Used to Facilitate Road Repairs
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Drivers know about potholes, frost heaves and pavement erosion long before the government organization in charge of the roads does. In Italy, that timing is becoming more equal. The Apulia (Puglia) Regional Government launched a pilot project with Pirelli to test the company's Cyber Tyre functionality, mapping the area's road network and increasing safety. The project aims to create a "state of health" for the region's roads. Pirelli's Cyber Tyre gathers data via an embedded sensor and then transmits it to the car's electronic control unit using 5G technology. The data is then transferred to onboard devices, like an infotainment screen. Three Pirelli tire lines feature the Cyber technology: Pirelli P Zero (PZ4), P Zero Corsa and P Zero Winter. Cyber-enabled tires are distinguished by a "C" on the sidewall. Work in progress in the highway the text reads 'Reduce speed because there are Men at Work' in Italian. It is the first project in the world that is capable of unifying the two types of data. "The Apulia Region is proud of this forward-looking agreement, as we always are when it comes to ensuring the safety of citizens. Technology can save lives. In this case, it will be useful as a thermometer of the state of health of our roads," President of the Apulia Region, Michele Emiliano, told Newsweek. "When you systematize factors such as innovation, intelligent and long-term planning, the exchange of best practices with a historic Italian and world tyre company, the result is an historic agreement, which does not entail any charges for the Region and I am sure will bring significant results," he continued. The cars for the project have been supplied by Ayvens, a rental company that offers long-term rental services and fleet management. They are on the Apulian roads collecting data today. "For Pirelli's digital development, Apulia is becoming an important center of excellence, fully integrated with our other research hubs around the world. At the heart of this innovation and the related activities lies the Cyber Tyre technology: this hardware and software system not only enables a connection between the road surface and the vehicle's control systems, but also allows for precise analysis of road infrastructure conditions, contributing to increased road safety," Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice chairman of Pirelli, told Newsweek. The project is preparing Pirelli for the connected technology that will rule the day in tomorrow's smart cities. "In the future, Pirelli Cyber Tyre will also be able to provide essential information in anticipation of the advent of smart cities, communicating with the surrounding environment and other vehicles through 5G connectivity," the executive said.
