Boku Deepens LATAM Commitment, Readies Merchants for Brazil's Digital Payments Revolution via Pix

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Boku, a global leader in localised payment solutions, has been granted a Payment Institution license by the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB). This authorisation enables Boku to operate as a Payment Initiator and E-money Issuer, positioning the company to participate in Brazil's evolving Open Finance ecosystem as a Payment Initiator Service Provider (PISP)—a key step toward enabling seamless Pix payments without redirection (JSR). With this licence, Boku is on track to make Pix Automático available to merchants in early 2026. Localised payment provider Boku gets Brazil's Payment Institution licence, enabling support for Pix and Pix Automático. Used by 76% of adults, Boku will offer recurring payments, helping merchants tap into Brazil's digital-first, cardless payment shift. Share With this move, Boku can help millions of Brazilians—especially those without credit cards—make secure, seamless recurring payments for streaming, subscriptions, and digital goods. This supports Brazil's push toward digital-first payments and greater financial inclusion. Pix becomes Brazil's top payment method Pix, launched by the Brazilian Central Bank in 2020, is now the most popular payment method in Brazil. The payments system is used by more than 76% of adults and is especially favoured by younger consumers banking with digital-first platforms like Nubank. Since its launch in 2020, Pix has transformed Brazil's payments landscape, driving widespread adoption of digital transactions. Today, over 70% of adults and 15 million businesses use Pix, with the system accounting for 45% of all payments and 30% of e-commerce payments in the country. In total, 20% of Brazil's transaction value now flows through Pix, underscoring the scale of this digital payments shift. Pix Automático: powering a new wave of digital payments Pix Automático launched in June 2025 to meet growing consumer demand for convenience. It enables recurring payments for services like streaming and subscriptions—vital in a market where ease of use often outweighs brand loyalty. This shift in consumer behaviour is reflected in Boku's 2024–2028 Global Ecommerce Report, which states 78% of Brazilian respondents would consider switching payment methods for benefits like lower fees, better security, or ease of use. Boku's eMoney licence: unlocking next-gen payment experiences With its new licence, Boku is now authorised as a Payment Institution in Brazil, covering Payment Initiation and E-money Issuance. This authorisation is a prerequisite for future participation in Pix and Open Finance, positioning Boku to expand its capabilities in the market once further approvals are obtained. The launch of Pix Automático brings support for recurring payments on top of the existing one-time charge capabilities. Pix enables fast, one-time transactions, often facilitated through banking apps and digital wallets. Pix Automático will add support for recurring payments, enabling merchants to offer subscription billing directly via the Pix ecosystem. This unlocks new use cases for merchants with subscription-based business models—such as digital entertainment platforms—by streamlining payment collection. Together, they reduce checkout friction, improve conversion, and expand access for unbanked consumers, accelerating the regional adoption of local payment methods. Stuart Neal, CEO, Boku, said: "Our mission is to let consumers everywhere pay for what they love in the way they prefer. For merchants, that means offering localised options that unlock new growth. Our commitment to expanding local payment options—like Pix Automático —shows how innovation can drive financial inclusion at scale. Brazil is setting the pace and Pix Automático, reflects that vision—reaching more users and making everyday payments simpler and more inclusive." Ricardo Amaral, VP LATAM, Boku, said: 'Brazil is leading a payments revolution, and Boku is proud to help shape its future. This next chapter centres millions of Brazilian consumers— who might not be credit-card holders, as well as those who prefer simpler and more secure ways to pay. Pix Automático is our next frontier, and with our new BCB-issued Payment Institution licence, we're on track to make it available to merchants in early 2026. At Boku, we bring deep expertise in local payments and a commitment to expanding choice. By helping global merchants adopt local payment methods like Pix, we're turning Brazil's digital economy into a blueprint for growth across Latin America.' A regional domino effect Brazil is leading digital payments in Latin America, but other markets are also innovating. Colombia plans to launch a Pix-inspired real-time system in September 2025 via Bre-B. Mexico and Argentina have systems like DiMo and Transferencias 3.0, using QR code interoperability. The region is shifting from cards to diverse local methods. Boku, now a licensed Payment Institution, invites merchants to join this LATAM payments transformation. PPRO integrates Pix Automático for recurring payments in Brazil

Payments platform PPRO has integrated Pix Automático into its services, aligning with the Central Bank of Brazil's official deployment. This enhancement to Brazil's instant payment system, Pix, aims to streamline recurring transactions for consumers. Pix Automático, a development by the Central Bank of Brazil, enables consumers to set up recurring payments for services such as subscriptions, utilities, and memberships with one-time authorisation. The service targets Brazilians lacking access to credit cards, as it provides an alternative means to engage with recurring payment models. For merchants and payment service providers (PSPs), PPRO's platform now includes a sandbox and documentation for Pix Automático, allowing them to offer Brazil's preferred instant payment method with added functionality for recurring payments. The move aims to support improved conversion and retention rates by minimising payment declines and reducing subscriber turnover. PPRO's platform also offers a plug-and-play feature, which is expected to provide expedited access to Brazil's Pix user base. PPRO CEO Motie Bring said: 'Recurring payments are a powerful engine for growth and Pix Automático is set to transform how consumers in Brazil engage with subscriptions and other repeat services. Our mission is to help PSPs and merchants tap into local payment preferences with ease, and Pix Automático is another key step in delivering on that promise.' This development follows PPRO's earlier launch of a Subscriptions for Local Payments solution. In February, PPRO secured principal membership with the European Payments Initiative (EPI) for Wero. PPRO's EPI membership is set to offer clients multiple access points to Wero, including sponsored associate membership, payment facilitator access, or as a technical gateway. "PPRO integrates Pix Automático for recurring payments in Brazil " was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand. CURITIBA, Brazil, June 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Pix Automático, the new recurring payments feature within Brazil's popular instant payment system, has just launched. Introduced by the Central Bank of Brazil in 2020, Pix is already used by 91% of the country's adult population. With Pix Automático, global digital companies, particularly subscription-based providers, are expected to broaden their reach to new consumers in Brazil. EBANX, a global technology company specializing in payment solutions for emerging markets, is already integrated with Pix Automático and ready to connect its merchants to the new feature starting today. Global streaming platforms and SaaS companies are among the first merchants to integrate the new feature into their checkout pages through EBANX's solution. Over 170 million consumers use Pix, according to the Central Bank of Brazil. At the same time, 60 million Brazilians don't have credit cards. This way, Pix Automático improves accessibility and unlocks new revenue potential. For companies that depend on recurring payments and currently rely solely on credit cards, the launch of Pix Automático opens up a significant growth opportunity in Brazil. According to Payments and Commerce Market Intelligence (PCMI) data in EBANX's study Beyond Borders 2025, Pix Automático could unlock over USD 30 billion in online recurring payments within two years. " The new recurring feature of Pix is the key to democratizing access to subscription services, enabling unprecedented financial control to millions of Brazilians," says Eduardo de Abreu, VP of Product at EBANX. E-commerce growth With the new recurring feature, Pix is projected to surpass credit cards as the most widely used payment method in Brazilian digital commerce by the end of 2025. The system is already the fastest-growing payment method for online purchases, considering emerging markets in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and India, with an annual growth rate of 35% through 2027, per PCMI's projections. This growth is related to today's launch. " Sectors with low Pix participation in transaction volume should experience a change in the coming years," projects Abreu, from EBANX. For SaaS and streaming companies, Pix accounts for 13% and 2% of all online volume transacted, respectively. The average across all verticals is 40%. These two sectors are still dominated by credit cards, with shares of 79% for streaming companies and 86% for SaaS. " Card volume is not expected to decline in sectors where recurring payments are key, but instead to grow alongside the overall market," states the VP of Product at EBANX. According to PCMI, Brazilian e-commerce is expected to grow by 40% over the next two years, representing an additional USD 167 billion in online purchase volume.
