Former Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams killed in San Diego plane crash

Daniel Williams was among the victims of a fatal plane crash in San Diego. The former drummer from the metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada was killed after a private airplane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood on Thursday morning, his father told TMZ. The band, which parted ways with the musician in 2016, seemingly confirmed Williams' death in an Instagram post featuring several photos of him. "No words. We owe you everything," the caption said. "Love you forever." The Associated Press identified the plane's pilot and owner as music agent Dave Shapiro. A spokesperson for Sound Talent Group, the agency that Shapiro co-founded, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the agent and two other STG employees were killed in the crash. "We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends," the STG spokesperson said. "Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today's tragedy. Thank you so much for respecting their privacy at this time." Shortly before the crash, Williams shared three posts on his Instagram story confirming that he was flying with Shapiro. The first post read, "Flying back with @davevelocity," which is Shaprio's handle on the platform. The second post showed an image of the cockpit and featured a paraphrase of a quote from Captain Phillips: "Hey. Hey…you…look at me…I'm the (co)pilot now." The third and final post seemed to show Williams in the copilot's seat, with the caption, "Here we gooooo." Williams' father, Larry, told TMZ that his son did not have his pilot's license and suggested that the posts were merely jokes. Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for The Devil Wears Prada for more information. Williams was one of the founding members of The Devil Wears Prada when it formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 2005. He contributed drums on the group's first five studio albums: Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, Plagues, With Roots Above and Branches Below, Dead Throne, and 8:18. The drummer departed the band in 2016, and worked as a software engineer for GoPro for eight years. Williams announced that he'd accepted a new job at Apple less than two weeks before the San Diego Police Department said in a press release that six people were on board the plane when it crashed into a house on the 3100 block of Salmon Road in the Tierrasanta neighborhood around 3:45 a.m. local time. Authorities confirmed that at least two people died in the crash, but are still determining the exact number of fatalities. Eight people were injured in the incident, but none of those injured were on board the plane. The National Transportation Safety Bureau is investigating the crash. AP reported that Shapiro's plane crashed into Navy-owned housing in a neighborhood near San Diego's Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. Local police reported that two were confirmed to have died from the incident and at least eight were injured, with around 10 buildings sustaining damage and 100 residents evacuating from the area. Tributes pour in after drummer Daniel Williams and music agent Dave Shapiro named as victims in San Diego plane crash

The former drummer of a Christian rock band and a music agent were among those identified as victims of a deadly plane crash in a San Diego neighborhood before dawn on Thursday. The fiery crash occurred around 3:47 a.m. when the small Cessna 550 abruptly crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood, igniting cars and homes, and injuring eight people on the ground. The exact number of victims, and the number of people on board the plane is still unknown, though it is believed that at least three were killed. Here's what we know about them so far. Dave Shapiro the owner of Sound Talent Group, was the first person identified among the deceased, as confirmed by his company. Shapiro, 42, was an avid pilot with over a decade of flying experience, though it was not immediately clear if he was flying the plane or if he was a passenger. He was also known in the music industry as a 'daredevil,' according to a Billboard report. 'We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends,' a spokesperson for Sound Talent Group told Billboard. 'Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today's tragedy. Thank you so much for respecting their privacy at this time.' 'From BASE jumping to aerobatic flying, Helicopters to twin engines, flight instructing to furthering his own education, doesn't matter to Dave as long as he gets to be in the sky,' Shapiro's aviation website reads. Shapiro, who worked with bands including Sum 41 and Pierce the Veil, was also a staunch supporter of independent music. He launched his own agency in 2018 with Tim Borror and Matt Anderson. Daniel Williams was the former drummer of metal-core band The Devil Wears Prada, and was identified as a victim of the crash by his family, according to TMZ. The outlet reported that the drummer's father, Larry Williams, said he had not received official confirmation from authorities, but that he was confident his son had been on the plane. The Devil Wears Prada also posted a tribute to Williams on its official Instagram page. Sharing several pictures of him the band wrote 'No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever." Just prior to the crash Williams had posted a photo of himself online in the copilot's seat of the small plane, with the caption 'Hey ... look at me ... I'm the (co) pilot now.' However, his father told TMZ that his son did not have a pilot's license. In a post on X, podcast State of the Scene wrote: 'Heart goes out to Dave Shapiro and Daniel Williams' family and friends. What a f****** tragedy this week has been.' Another fan shared a picture with Williams on X, describing him as a 'great guy' who 'always had the time of day to talk or take a pic in the probably 15 times I saw Prada between 06 and '13.' TDWP 'still remains my favorite band to this day. The drums on Plagues blew my mind when it came out & nothing's changed,' the fan added. Another fan also described him as 'an inspiration'. 'This one hurts, man. Daniel Williams (founding drummer for The Devil Wears Prada) was one of my biggest drumming inspirations back in high school.' 'I looked up to him a lot and met him multiple times - he was always such a humble dude. Life is too short.'
