8 activists booked over ‘ruckus' at Pune police commissionerate

The Bund Garden police have booked eight activists for allegedly causing a ruckus on the premises of the Pune City Police Commissionerate on the intervening night of August 3 and 4 while demanding action against the personnel at Kothrud station. Officers said the activists had gathered forcefully at the commissionerate seeking action under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the officers. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Sujat Ambedkar and others had also joined the protest. A senior police officer said the First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against the activists early on August 5. According to the police, officers in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar had sought help from the Kothrud police to trace a woman who was reportedly missing. Subsequently, on August 1, the Damini Squad (comprising only women personnel) of Kothrud police station questioned three women residing at a hostel in Kothrud as the missing woman had stayed with them for some time. The women were also brought to the station for inquiry. The women, however, alleged that the police officers tortured them and passed casteist remarks at them. The police have denied the allegations. On the night of August 3, two of the three women gathered at the police commissionerate on Sadhu Vaswani Road in Pune Camp along with a group of activists. The police asked them if they had permission to protest at the spot, but the activists allegedly argued that they did not need any permission. Meanwhile, some of the activists are said to have entered the police commissionerate forcefully and shouted on the premises. Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, held a discussion with the activists and issued them an official letter regarding an inquiry into the matter, but an activist allegedly tore the letter. The activists also made provocative statements at the spot, the FIR stated. The eight activists have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 190 and 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 221 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 324(3) (mischief and damaged to public property) and sections of the Maharashtra Police Act.

125-year old Kotwal House in Hyderabad regains its lost glory

HYDERABAD: For over a century, Kotwal House stood as the silent sentinel of law and order in Hyderabad, a place where power resided, decisions were made and the city's administrative machinery once revolved. Built in the early 1900s and officially handed over to the Police Commissionerate in 1905, this colonial-era structure has now undergone a comprehensive restoration, reviving not just its physical form but its historic spirit. The restored building eas officially inaugurated on Wednesday by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar. A member of Deccan Terrain Agencies, Mir Khan, told the TNIE: 'Kotwal House is more than a building, it's a symbol of continuity. It has housed generations of officers, from the time of the Nizam through British rule, post-Independence administration and into modern governance. But as decades passed, age caught up with its elegant stone walls, lime plaster, and traditional wooden roofing. Water seeped through broken rafters. Plywood had replaced teak, and the structure was deteriorating.' Hyderabad Commissioner of Police, CV Anand said: 'Nearly four years ago, the roof of this historic building collapsed, and the building was on the verge of being demolished. But I couldn't bring myself to let go of such a vital piece of our heritage. I began searching for someone willing to support its revival and Anil, CMD of Greenko, came forward to fund the restoration. Work officially began in December 2022.' 'However, when I was transferred in October 2023, the project came to an abrupt halt. It wasn't until my return as Commissioner in September 2024 that we were able to restart the restoration. Restoring a heritage is no easy task - it demands both time and patience. Mir Khan of Deccan Terrain Agencies has done a remarkable job, and we are finally ready to unveil it. From now on, the Kotwal will once again have a dignified place to sit when visiting the Old City,' he added. 'The restoration of Kotwal House was no cosmetic makeover. It was an act of architectural reverence - an attempt to return the building to its original glory without modern intrusions. Every detail was carefully studied, right down to the curve of glass panes and the grain of wooden railings,' Mir Khan said.

Later, he held a press briefing at Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan, Indirapuram, about development agendas. 'It is a new Ghaziabad that has changed its old perception. Gone are the times when Ghaziabad was known for crime and gang wars, and films were made about the situation. It is now set to begin a new journey under the new initiative of Greater Ghaziabad, in which Khoda, Loni, Muradnagar etc., will be a part of Greater Ghaziabad and will be a part of Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (municipal corporation). I have asked for a detailed project for its development,' the CM told reporters. He also spoke about the plan to have an integrated office complex to bring all district offices under one roof and to improve safety and law and order through the Police Commissionerate's headquarters. But the work could not go through. Now, I have asked GDA to take up the project for a stadium on the land and also take up its operation. Facilities like the Mansarowar Bhawan, Uttarakhand Bhawan and Purvanchal Bhawan should be used by the public, and the corporation has been asked to prepare a model and send it to us,' he also told reporters. Over the long-pending issue of the rejuvenation of the Hindon river, he told media that there were meaningful discussions on the revival of the river.
