Crimes come down, but traffic violations on rise

Deccan Herald4 days ago
Hubballi/DHNS: People in the City are happy with the police for their strict action against the criminals, which resulted in a reduction in crime rate. But, the same people are not happy with the police regarding traffic management system and demand for the strict implementation of traffic rules for smooth vehicular movement.Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissionerate has been taking swift action against the criminals for involving in robbery, murder, rape, theft and other crimes. Not only the police, even their active guns also planted fear among the criminals. But the traffic violators are not scared of the police. Many people violate traffic laws and continue to ride two-wheelers without helmets. Triple raids, jumping signals, wrong side driving, not using seat belts, and driving without license are common scenes here. But the police, who are busy in managing traffic in the absence of traffic signals, are not able to prevent such violations.Chaotic traffic management has been troubling other vehicle users, pedestrians and their safety. Pedestrians, especially aged people, women and children, find it difficult to cross the road. Footpaths have been encroached by hawkers and street vendors and people park their vehicles on the footpaths, which has forced the pedestrians to walk on roads.Defunct signalsThough there are signals at Vani Vilas Circle, Akashay Park Circle on Gokul Road, Bharat Mill, Kamaripet police station circle, and other places, they are not functional, and a couple of policemen along with home guards are being deployed to manage the traffic.Despite policemen at Kittur Chennamma Circle, Desai Circle, Railway Bridge on Gadag Road, Hosur Cross, Keshwapur Circle, the violators are not bothered to adhere to traffic norms. The police have installed automated CCTV cameras in several places to check traffic violations but still the traffic violations have not come down. However, for the 2024 calendar year, traffic police collected Rs 11 crore fine from the violators, which is the highest fine amount ever collected. In 2023, they collected Rs 9.41 crore, in 2022 police collected 8.07 crore penalty from the violators. Compared to the previous years, the fine collection has increased by more than Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore every year.Association of Consulting Civic Engineers former president Suresh Kiresu said laxity of police has led the public to neglect traffic rules, which has been causing problems in the City and it needs to be rectified immediately. The Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner should look into the traffic issue, take action to install traffic signals, clear footpath encroachment, repaint zebra crossing, and to take all required measures for smooth traffic movement.'Everybody's responsibility'Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Raveesh C R said there are four traffic police stations in twin cities and they are working on smooth traffic movement in twin cities. As the number of vehicles are increasing, the number of violators also increases. We have been penalising the violators and collecting more than Rs 10 crore yearly. 'Traffic is a social responsibility. Everyone should follow the rules and regulations to save their lives and others as well,' he added.

BJP municipal council chairman held on bribe charges

Jind: In BJP-ruled Haryana, the anti-corruption bureau on Saturday nabbed BJP leader and Julana Municipal Council chairman Dr Sanjay Jangra over an alleged bribe of Rs 2.27 lakh. His receptionist was arrested for allegedly accepting the cash. According to the ACB DSP, a contractor from Bhiwani, Manoj, filed a complaint alleging that Jangra was demanding a commission of 2.5% in exchange for clearing payments. On the basis of this information, ACB formed a raiding team and gave the complainant Rs 2.27 lakh marked with powder. When the complainant spoke with Jangra, he allegedly directed him to hand over the money to his hospital receptionist. As soon as the complainant handed over the cash to receptionist Satbir, the ACB team caught him with the money. The ACB team detained Jangra for questioning and seized a DVR from the spot. When Satbir's hands were washed, the powder turned his hands red, confirming the bribe transaction, said officials. A DSP-vigilance at Bhiwani said the contractor undertook work worth Rs 10 crore in Julana, out of which 50% was completed. The matter is under investigation and the suspects will be produced in court, where the entire case will be revealed, the DSP said. Dr Jangra has been living in Julana for 35 years, having opened a hospital in 1984, soon after completing his MBBS. In the municipal elections held on March 12 this year, he won by 671 votes and became chairman. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Times News Network New Delhi: A 40-year-old contractor, a father of five and the lone breadwinner of his family, died after allegedly being hit by an SUV in west Delhi's Moti Nagar around 1am on Saturday. Bechu Lal was seated on his bike and speaking on the phone when a Mahindra Thar roared in from behind. Such was the impact that the bike and the SUV then crashed into a truck parked nearby. Last Sunday, a Thar mowed down two people on a footpath in Chanakyapuri. A case has been registered. The SUV was found registered in the name of a west Delhi resident. Investigators said the rear of the bike and the front of the SUV were heavily damaged. CCTV footage showed the road was busy when the white SUV, at high speed, lost control and hit the truck. Lal's bike was parked near the truck. CCTV footage is being studied to ascertain the route the driver took to flee. Shiv Kumar, Lal's relative, said the contractor lived in west Delhi's Prem Nagar with his 15-year-old son, while his wife and four daughters live in Gonda, UP. "On Friday night, he went out to meet someone at the hospital when the accident occurred near the hospital gate," he said. When Lal did not return home, the family began searching for him. Around 5am, they received a call from police. Lal was the only earning member of the family and had recently fixed the marriage of his 19-year-old elder daughter. "That seems uncertain now," Kumar said. "The other children are still studying. With Lal gone, it will be extremely difficult for the family to manage their day-to-day expenses and continue the children's education." Family members said Lal specialised in plaster of Paris work and did not have a fixed income. On most days, he earned between Rs 500 and Rs 900, a relative said, most of which was sent to his family and spent on the children's education.
