Texas A&M basketball included in CBS Sports analyst's Top 45 preseason rankings
Texas A&M basketball included in CBS Sports analyst's Top 45 preseason rankings New Texas A&M head basketball coach Bucky McMillan is one of the shining stars of the offseason, becoming the program's 23rd head coach last month after Buzz Williams departed College Station for Maryland after six seasons. So far, the Alabama native has landed nine players from the transfer portal, including his latest acquisition, former Texas Tech/Creighton point guard Pop Isaacs. Right now, Texas A&M's 2025 roster is filled with talent at every position, as McMillan's fast-paced system relies on elite guard play to quarterback the offense and shoot the ball at a high and efficent rate, especially from beyond the arc, as five of the Aggies' portal additions shot at least 30% from 3-point range last season. In addition to Isaacs's commitment, the news that Indiana transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako withdrew from the 2025 NBA Draft jolted the Aggies' potential next season as a likely NCAA Tournament team, which CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein wholeheartedly agrees with. On Thursday, Rothstein released his "Rothstein 45" preseason rankings ahead of the 2025 season, placing Texas A&M at No. 35, just below, yes, Buzz Williams' Maryland Terrapins at No. 34. Here is Rothstein's projected starting lineup, which is very similar to my own for the 2025 Aggies. G Pop Isaacs G Marcus Hill G Rylan Griffen F Mackenzie Mgbako C Federiko Federiko With this starting lineup, Texas A&M's offense should be one of the top units in the SEC, based on Isaac's and Griffen's past performances. Mgbako's shooting performance during the NBA Combine also showed an improved player from 3-point territory. However, the first 10 or so games of the season will define this team, as it needs to mesh this offseason and find an early rhythm before entering SEC play. Projecting Texas A&M's 2025 basketball lineup after Pop Isaac's commitment
Projecting Texas A&M's 2025 basketball lineup after Pop Isaac's commitment Tuesday morning brought very good news for new Texas A&M head basketball coach Bucky McMillan, starting with the landing of former Texas Tech and Creighton standout guard Pop Isaacs, paired with the official return of Indiana transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako, who recently participated in the NBA Combine this month. With Mgbako officially signed and ready to play in 2025, the Aggies' roster is more than talented enough to make the NCAA Tournament next season, especially with Pop Isaacs, who is deemed to become one of the program's starters based on his elite play with the Bluejays last season, averaging 16 points per game before his season-ending injury. Overall, McMillan has more than enough to work with during in inaugural campaign, and it's crazy to think that after Buzz Williams departed for Maryland, Texas A&M's roster was gutted, leaving sophomore forward Chris McDermott as the lone name left. So far, every need has been filled, and for those who have lost track of every new addition from the portal, here is where things currently stand, and how the 2025 starting lineup could look. Point guard, senior Pop Isaacs (Texas Tech/Creighton) Shooting guard, redshirt junior Marcus Hill (NC State) Small forward, senior Rylan Griffen (Alabama/Kansas) Power forward, junior Mackenzie Mgbako (NC State) Center, redshirt senior Federiko Federiko (Texas Tech) Point guard (Sixth man) senior Jacari Lane (Alabama State) Power forward, redshirt senior Rashaun Agee (USC) Shooting guard, junior Josh Holloway (Samford) Power forward, sophomore Jamie Vinson (Texas) Power forward, redshirt sophomore Zach Clemence (Kansas) Point guard, freshman Jeremiah Green (2025 signee) Power forward sophomore Chris McDermott With five guards, six forwards, and versatile center Federiko Federiko, McMillan has all but completed his 2025 roster, barring any last-minute additions heading into the 2025 season. Compared to Buzz Williams' previous rosters, this is by far the most talented Texas A&M has had in several seasons based on recruiting rankings and production. Milos Uzan withdraws from NBA Draft to return to Houston: Source
Milos Uzan has decided to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return for his senior season at Houston, a source briefed on the move confirmed. This decision gives Houston three returning starters — Uzan joins Emanuel Sharp and Joseph Tugler — and cements last year's national runner-up as one of the preseason national title favorites. Advertisement In a roster domino of Uzan's decision, former Texas Tech and Creighton guard Pop Isaacs decommitted from Houston and will head to Texas A&M, his agency told The Athletic. The Houston coaching staff operated this spring under the premise that Uzan would likely stay in the draft and moved quickly to replace him in the starting lineup with Isaacs. The door was always left open in case Uzan's feedback from the NBA led him back to Houston. After participating in the NBA Draft Combine and working out for six teams, he was trending toward the second round — he appeared at No. 40 in The Athletic's Sam Vecenie's latest mock draft. By returning to college, it's possible that Uzan could get more money than he would have received with a contract in the second round. He also has the chance to play his way into the 2026 first round. With L.J. Cryer, Houston's leading scorer from last season, graduating, Uzan will likely take on more of a scoring role after averaging 11.4 points in his first season at Houston. For coach Kelvin Sampson, his formula has been roster continuity, and this certainly helps in that department. The Cougars will be leaning more on freshmen than ever before, with two starting spots likely going to power forward Chris Cenac Jr. and either Isiah Harwell or Kingston Fleming at the other guard spot, but it's a lot easier to blend those freshmen around three veterans. The combination of Uzan, Sharpe and Tugler outscored opponents by 40.8 points per 100 possessions when on the floor together last season, per CBB Analytics. — The Athletic's Tobias Bass contributed to this report.
