Hindu Group Leader Arrested For Provocative Remarks In Karnataka

Mangaluru: Mangaluru police on Tuesday arrested Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sharan Pumpwell for allegedly making provocative remarks and inciting unrest following the murder of Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty earlier this month, officials said. Shetty, a known rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered on May 1 in the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru city. In the early hours of May 2, Pumpwell, addressing the media, alleged involvement of "jihadi Islamic terrorists" in the murder and linked the incident to the banned Popular Front of India (PFI). He also announced a district-wide bandh from 6 am to 6 pm that day, calling on the public to shut shops and offices in protest. However, as the general public did not heed the bandh call, supporters of Pumpwell allegedly resorted to acts of vandalism and disruption in various parts of Mangaluru. According to police, this resulted in damage to public property, disturbance of communal harmony, and a breakdown of public order. The Mangaluru police subsequently registered a suo motu case against Pumpwell under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a senior police officer said. Investigators said that the accused ignored two summons issued under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and failed to cooperate with the inquiry. He was taken into custody on May 27 and is being produced before a local court, the Mangaluru police said in a statement.

Government is deliberately branding Dakshina Kannada as communal: MP Chowta

The State government is deliberately branding Dakshina Kannada negatively by calling it 'communal' and a 'Hindutva factory,' thereby harming the growth of the region where people have stood by nationalistic thoughts, charged Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta in Mangaluru on Thursday. Talking to reporters, Capt. Chowta said any crime in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is being given a communal colour by the Congress-ruled State government. 'A specific negative narrative is being set by projecting this region as communal. It appears revenge is being taken against people of the region who are unapologetic nationalists,' he said. 'When will the region get rid of this communal tag and negative branding?' he questioned the government. He criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao for not sparing time to hear people, or at least the elected representatives, following the tense situation after the recent mob lynching of 38-year-old Ashraf and the murder of 30-year-old Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty. 'Tomorrow [Friday], the two [CM and district in-charge Minister] are just visiting the city, and to take part in some programmes, and go back,' he said. The two have not held a review meeting in Mangaluru to further the growth of the region, he alleged. The murder of Suhas Shetty, he said, is being deliberately projected as a murder of a person with a criminal background, and the government has so far not given a serious look at the horrific manner in which the crime has been committed. Though there is a probability of involvement of Popular Front of India (PFI) members and foreign funding for the murder, the government was deliberately not handing over the investigation of the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The sinister designs of the Congress party in projecting the Karavali region in a negative way lay exposed before the people. The BJP will continue to fight for the region, and it will remain committed to the development of the Karavali region, he said.

HC grants bail to PFI worker ‘spreading good messages'

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has granted bail to religious preacher and the alleged main promoter in Malegaon of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), Mohammad Irfan Daulat Khan, saying witness statements showed 'he was spreading good messages'. 'The statements of some of the witnesses show that the appellant was spreading good messages,' the division bench of justices Sarang Kotwal and SM Modak said on Monday while granting bail to Khan. The religious preacher was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on November 13, 2022 for allegedly spreading religious hatred and inciting Muslims to wage war against the Indian government. Later, the charge sheet filed by the ATS claimed that Khan was the main promoter of the PFI in Malegaon. Khan's bail plea was rejected by the special NIA court in Nashik on March 5, 2024, after which he approached the high court. He sought bail primarily on grounds of parity – saying that while two of his co-accused had been released on bail by the Supreme Court, the trial was not likely to conclude any time soon as the prosecution wanted to examine over 150 witnesses. The ATS opposed Khan's bail plea, claiming that he had been named in five previous offences. They agency also relied on two audio clips which reportedly demonstrated his culpability in inciting people. The court, however, noticed that the first audio clip pertained to some conversation about a banner, with one of the speakers suggesting some correction. 'This conversation is hardly incriminating,' the judges said. As regards the second audio clip, the ATS claimed that it mentioned a list of articles which were to be held in stock in different mohallas and mosques for protection of Muslims, in case they were attacked. 'There is a conversation about helping the poor, widows and similar people. There is also a reference to some survey in respect of these issues. Again, this conversation can hardly be called incriminating,' the judges noted. The court then referred to some witness statements wherein they spoke about attending courses in which PFI workers trained them in personality development, time management and legal awareness. Based on these statements, the court held that Khan was spreading good messages and granted him bail.
