Handcuffed, shirtless escapee back in custody after fleeing from Man. hospital

A man who escaped police custody in a western Manitoba city's hospital almost two weeks ago has been caught. Byron Roulette, 26, was handcuffed and believed to be shirtless, wearing grey-brown shorts with blood stains on his shoes, when he fled police in Portage la Prairie on July 24, the RCMP previously said. In an update Wednesday, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service said tips from Sandy Bay First Nation community members helped them find and arrest Roulette. Roulette was initially arrested by the MFNPS shortly before his escape, after officers were called about a break and enter involving a firearm in Sandy Bay First Nation, the service previously said. Officers found that a man had been assaulted by two other men, who then stole a truck from the house, police said. One of the assailants had a firearm. Roulette was suffering from self-inflicted wounds when police found and arrested him, police said. He was taken to the hospital in Portage la Prairie. Police said he fled as he waited for treatment.

Bystander saves child from drowning at Manitoba beach

RCMP in Portage la Prairie, Man., are reminding the public to keep an eye on their children after a two-year-old boy nearly drowned at Delta Beach a week ago. RCMP were called to the beach at approximately 6:15 p.m. on July 18. When they arrived, EMS had already responded to the scene and were treating the child. According to RCMP, the boy was playing in the water with other children when he suddenly didn't resurface. He was pulled from the water, not breathing. Mounties said a 29-year-old man at the beach saw what was happening and went to help the family. He performed CPR until the child started coughing and stayed with him until EMS arrived. 'If it wasn't for the actions of this man at the beach, the outcome would likely not have been the same,' said Staff Sgt. Darcy Turko with the Portage la Prairie RCMP in a statement. 'We would like to commend and thank this bystander for his quick thinking; his actions helped save a life.' The child will make a complete recovery, RCMP said.

Handcuffed, shirtless man escapes police custody in Portage la Prairie

RCMP in a western Manitoba city are warning the public about a large police presence after a man escaped custody on Thursday night. Byron Roulette, 26, was last seen on 5th Street SE, near Queen Avenue, in Portage la Prairie at 7:30 p.m. He was handcuffed and believed to be shirtless, and wearing grey-brown shorts with blood stains on his shoes. Roulette had been in the custody of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service, which arrested him earlier in the day. The MNFPS reported the escape to the RCMP around 9 p.m., the Mounties said in a news release. Multiple officers from both the RCMP and MNFPS are searching in the area where Roulette escaped. Specialized units are also helping, including RCMP police dog service and remotely piloted aircraft system. The RCMP is asking the public to be on the lookout for Roulette but to not approach him if seen. Call 911 immediately.

Stolen windmill in rural Manitoba has RCMP heads spinning

The RCMP are fanning out in their search for a stolen 25-foot-tall windmill and hoping the public can provide some tips. The turbine was taken sometime from July 4-6 from a property in the rural municipality of Grey, south of Portage la Prairie. "Due to the nature of the sheer size of the stolen property, RCMP believe someone in the area may have seen something," a news release said on Wednesday. The windmill is 7.6 metres tall with two-metre blades and is silver in colour. Anyone with information is asked to please call the RCMP at 204-745-6760.
