Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem pull out of Silesia Diamond League; Here's why

The much-hyped javelin battle between India's Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem will not materialize at the 2025 Silesia Diamond League. Scheduled for August 16 in Poland, the highly anticipated clash was shelved after Chopra withdrew and Nadeem was not listed in the final entry roster. Organizers had initially confirmed the participation of both Olympic medalists in early July, building excitement for a rare Indo-Pak rivalry in athletics. However, uncertainty loomed after Nadeem recently underwent surgery on his right calf in London. His coach, Salman Butt, later confirmed that the Paris Olympic gold medallist would skip the event, prioritizing recovery and preparation for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September. Stellar 2025 Season for Neeraj Despite the setback, Neeraj Chopra has enjoyed a remarkable 2025 campaign. He opened his season with a victory at the Potch Invitational in South Africa and then achieved a national record throw of 90.23m at the Doha Diamond League in May, becoming the first Indian javelin thrower to join the elite 90m club. Following that, he secured a second-place finish at the Janusz Kusoci?"ski Memorial in Poland but bounced back with a win at the Paris Diamond League, throwing 88.16m. He also claimed the Ostrava Golden Spike title, which helped him reclaim the world number one ranking in men's javelin throw. Neeraj further added to his accolades by winning the NC Classic in India, a domestic competition he personally hosts and promotes. Both Chopra and Nadeem are now expected to square off at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo next month. With both athletes aiming for peak performance on the global stage, fans will be hopeful that the Indo-Pak clash they missed in Poland will finally unfold in Japan.

Neeraj Chopra Withdraws From Silesia Diamond League, Classic Clash With Arshad Nadeem Cancelled

Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem have withdrawn from Silesia Diamond League, disappointing fans hoping for an India-Pakistan face-off. In what has come as a major disappointment to athletics enthusiasts, double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and Paris Olympics gold medallist Arshad Nadeem have both withdrawn from the upcoming Silesia Diamond League, thus dashing all hopes of an India-Pakistan face-off. Nadeem is missing the tournament after undergoing surgery on his right calf in July, with his coach confirming he has been ruled out. However, the reason for Neeraj's withdrawal remains unclear. The tournament was scheduled for Saturday, August 16, in Silesia, Poland. Nadeem claimed the Olympic gold with a huge throw of 92.97m, edging out Neeraj, who recorded a best of 89.45m to settle for silver. Neeraj kicked off the 2025 season well, starting with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April. Neeraj then made history at the Doha Diamond League by finishing second and recording his first-ever throw beyond 90 meters, reaching 90.23m. Most recently, Neeraj claimed a win at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic, held at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru, a competition named in his honour. Nadeem was slated to compete at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru in July, but because of border tensions between India and Pakistan in May, he wasn't extended an invitation. Neeraj and Arshad are now gearing up for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, all set to take place from September 13 to 21. Neeraj is the current javelin World Champion, having bagged the title in 2023 with a throw of 88.17m. Neeraj might feature at the Brussels Diamond League on August 22 as well. Meanwhile, after his historic Paris Olympics win, Nadeem expressed deep frustration over promises made by the Pakistan government that remain unfulfilled. Despite being the first Pakistani athlete to win a gold medal in track and field, Nadeem revealed that he has yet to receive key promised rewards, including land plots announced after his win. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Paris Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra aims for top spot after consecutive runner-up finishes

New Delhi: After back-to-back second-place finishes this season, Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will look to go one better when he takes the field in the Paris Diamond League at the Stade Sebastien Charlety in the early hours of Saturday (1:12 AM IST). This will be Chopra's first appearance at the Paris Diamond League since 2017 when he finished fifth with a throw of 84.67m as a junior world champion. Eight years later, the stakes are higher, and the field significantly stronger. The Paris meet is the eighth stop on the 2025 Diamond League circuit, which will conclude with the two-day final in Zurich this August. Chopra began his 2025 campaign with a win at the Potch Invitational in South Africa, throwing 84.52m. But it was in Doha that he truly made headlines, breaching the elusive 90m mark for the first time with a sensational 90.23m effort — a new Indian national record. However, he was edged out by Germany's Julian Weber, who registered a personal best of 91.06m. A week later, the rivalry continued in Poland's Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, where Weber again pipped Chopra, this time with an 86.12m throw to Chopra's 84.14m in tricky, wet conditions. The Paris leg promises to be equally challenging. Chopra will once again face Julian Weber in what's fast becoming one of the most exciting rivalries in athletics. Also in the mix are some of the biggest names in javelin throw: Anderson Peters of Grenada, a two-time world champion and Paris 2024 bronze medallist with a personal best of 93.07m; Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist; Kenya's Julius Yego; Moldova's Andrian Mardare; and Brazil's Luiz Maurício da Silva. Five of the seven competitors have personal bests over 90m, highlighting the intense level of competition Chopra will face. Yet, with form, fitness, and experience on his side, India's premier track and field athlete will be aiming to convert his strong showings into a win — one that could set the tone for the rest of his season, including a highly anticipated Diamond League Final. When: Saturday, June 21 at 1:12 AM IST Where: Stade Sebastien Charlety, Paris Where to watch: Wanda Diamond League's official YouTube channel. There will be no live TV telecast in the country.
