Neeraj Chopra reclaims World No. 1 rank

Lausanne, (Switzerland) June 28 (UNI) India's javelin ace Neeraj Chopra has reclaimed the World number 1 rank in the latest rankings released by World Athletics.
Chopra had lost this position to Grenada's Anderson Peters in September, 2024.
In the rankings released earlier this week Chopra has 1445 ranking points compared to Anderson Peters' 1431.
Germany's Julian Weber is third in the rankings while Paris Olympic Gold medallist Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan is fourth with 1370 points and Czechia's Jakub Vadlejch completes the top five list.
Chopra's consistent performances in 2025 has seen him climb back to the top.
Neeraj won the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa in April and followed it up with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May. He logged a new national record of 90.23m at Doha to enter the coveted 90m club.
He was second again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland but returned to winning ways at the Paris Diamond League in June. He clocked a best of 88.16m in Paris.
Neeraj also added the Ostrava Golden Spike title to his kitty earlier this week.
Neeraj has Trumped Anderson Peters in all four of their meetings this year.
The two elite athletes will face off again at the NC Classic 2025 in Bengaluru on July 5.

Valencia winger Fran Perez joins Rayo Vallecano

Madrid, Aug 15 (UNI) Valencia has sold winger Fran Garcia to Rayo Vallecano for a fee close to a million euros, the club confirmed on its website on Friday. Garcia has signed a four-year-deal with the Madrid-based club, which makes its European debut in this season's UEFA Conference League play-off next week. Garcia is the son of former Valencia director of sport Francisco Perez 'Rufete', and came through the club's youth system. He made his La Liga debut during Gennaro Gattuso's brief spell as Valencia coach in the 2022-23 season and has played 77 times for the first-team, with many of those appearances coming as a substitute. Last season, Garcia struggled with a back problem, playing 26 times, but only starting four matches. In its communique, Valencia wrote that "Fran Perez has defended the Valencia shirt with pride and has been a reference point for the DNA and the values of our youth system." UNI/XINHUA BM

Cherop to be Uganda's sole participant at Silesia Diamond League

Kampala, Aug 15 (UNI) Uganda's Charity Cherop will be the country's sole representative at the IAAF Silesia Diamond League, scheduled for August 16 at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Poland. Cherop, 18, will line up in the women's 3,000m, facing a strong field that includes Kenya's three-time Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon. Kipyegon has dominated the 1,500m since the 2016 Rio Olympics and last weekend set a new world record of 3:38.68 in Eugene, the United States. "I know it will not be an easy race because I will be competing against top runners who have recorded good times. But I have prepared well and I am confident of performing well," Cherop said. Athletics Uganda president Dominic Otuchet said that while Uganda has previously fielded more than two runners in Diamond League events, Cherop will be the country's sole participant this time. "Cherop has had enough time to prepare and we believe she is going to put up a good show in Poland. The race is very important for her because she has a chance to record a good time and qualify for the World Championships," Otuchet said. Cherop, who took bronze at the World U20 Championships in Peru last August, is also aiming to run a personal best and secure a berth at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month. So far, 22 Ugandan athletes have qualified for the Tokyo event, with Cherop yet to join that list before the qualification window closes next week. UNI/XINHUA BM

Healy's fireworks overshadowed by final-over India A victory

Brisbane, Aug 15 (UNI) Alyssa Healy took a firm step on her path back from injury, clubbing India A to all parts of a ground named after her uncle Ian, before putting in her second long stint behind the stumps in three days. Yet the Australia captain's strong return from foot and knee issues took a back seat on Friday to her opponents' own comeback story, theirs from what appeared a doomed run chase to seizing a narrow victory that sealed a one-day series win over Australia A. The required run-rate was spiraling towards seven-an-over when India A's last recognised top-order bat, Radha Yadav, was dismissed for 60 to leave her side 7-193 with 11 overs remaining in their pursuit of Australia A's 9-265. It took a stirring 68-run stand between the visitors' numbers eight and nine, Tanuja Kanwer (50 off 57) and Prema Rawat (32no from 33), to pull off the two-wicket triumph. That was no mean feat given senior quicks Darcie Brown (who took 0-49 in her first match since March) and Kim Garth (1-33) opened the bowling, the pair among a cohort of national team players using the Queensland series for match practice. Needing five runs off the last over, Kanwer was out to Ella Hayward's first delivery, but Rawat held her nerve to seize victory with a ball to spare. Yastika Bhatia (66 off 71) and Radha Yadav (60 off 78) had laid the groundwork in the run-chase. It overshadowed somewhat Healy ramping up her return by pummelling a bruising 91 from just 87 balls in Brisbane, an early warning ahead of the ODI World Cup she will lead Australia at in October. "They've got a really spin-heavy attack and we're going to have to play a lot of that … throughout the World Cup as well, a lot of the middle overs will be spin-biased," said Healy. "For me it's really good practice, a good opportunity to be really decisive with your feet. I felt like it was okay at times today – not where I exactly want it to be – but can improve next game." Equally encouraging for Healy was her work in the field. Friday's match marked her second game back behind the stumps having not donned the gloves since January in an injury-marred home summer. "It actually feels really good. I feel in a really good place," Healy said of her return. "To have a little bit of time to focus on my keeping has been really worthwhile." The 35-year-old, who kept for 42 overs in Wednesday's three-wicket defeat to India A, has made technical adjustments in her keeping stance to, in her words, look after her "ageing joints". She looked spry even after spending more than 120 overs either batting or keeping over the first two ODIs, though she had no late-in-the-day tactical inspiration for captain Tahlia McGrath. "Today was a prime example of why I enjoy sitting out at times!" said Healy, whose regular deputy McGrath is captaining Australia A. "Not having to think about what to do at the back-end there is refreshing." Hayward, the Victorian spinner fresh off a breakthrough '24-25 summer, was entrusted with the last over but had more impact in the field, taking two catches and pulling off a sharp run-out at backward point. Garth made an unbeaten 41 from 45 to lead Australia A's late charge with the bat as India A made regular breakthroughs at the other end during Healy's hitting spree, which ended with more than 20 overs in the innings remaining. Ultimately the lack of contributions besides senior heads Healy and Garth cost the home side. Ian Healy Oval will also host the final one-day game on Sunday. UNI BM
