Parkview's community made Nicarela's Potjiekos competition successful
Nicarela's annual Potjiekos competition returned to George Hay Park in Parkview on July 27. Last year's event raised over R200 000, directly funding support homes for women and children, university bursaries for youth who would otherwise be left behind and emergency food relief. Locals showed up in droves with their families to the competition, while children enjoyed face paintings, swings and the jumping castle. This beloved fundraiser was more than a cook-off with 40 teams serving everything from lamb to vegan options, a family-friendly setup, and prizes for best potjie and best decorated stall. It was the perfect weekend outing with a purpose. All proceeds will go directly to Nicarela's work in: Supporting care homes for abused women and children. Providing educational bursaries for deserving students. Running food security programmes in under-resourced areas. Nicarela is a volunteer-driven organisation committed to making a positive impact in the community. The charity focuses on making education accessible, supporting orphanages, providing food for those in need, and helping families in crisis. Through major fundraising events like the Potjiekos competition and Parkview Christmas Market, Nicarela delivers financial assistance and personal care to those facing challenging circumstances. Sizzling showdown: Pretoria potjiekos enthusiasts compete in cook-off
The Frederika Village Sidewalk Sale and Potjiekos Challenge, organised by the shop owners, took place at Frederika Village in Rietfontein on Saturday. One of the organisers, Mariette Pretorius said the challenge is part of bringing the community together to buy Potjiekos from the sidewalks of the stores. The challenge, in which three owners took part, was a fun-filled day for the whole family, with local shops joining forces to bring visitors amazing specials, sidewalk stalls, and the friendly Potjiekos Challenge to warm them up on a winter's day! ALSO READ: New wheels make life easier for learners in the north 'The participants cooked a variety of delicious potjiekos, and the customers who bought the food were the judges,' said Pretorius. The day started in the morning and tasting time was noon. ALSO READ: Doornpoort local learns to reconnect with the warrior within The overall winner of the competition was Monica De Waal from the MST store with her beef and vegetable Potjie. In her words, she won the Potjiekos challenge because her potjie was cooked with love. One of the runners-up, Engela van Zonten, from The Taste Butchery cooked a biltong and pasta potjie. Another runner-up, Mariette Pretorius cooked an oxtail in red wine potjie.
