Sizzling showdown: Pretoria potjiekos enthusiasts compete in cook-off
One of the organisers, Mariette Pretorius said the challenge is part of bringing the community together to buy Potjiekos from the sidewalks of the stores.
The challenge, in which three owners took part, was a fun-filled day for the whole family, with local shops joining forces to bring visitors amazing specials, sidewalk stalls, and the friendly Potjiekos Challenge to warm them up on a winter's day!

'The participants cooked a variety of delicious potjiekos, and the customers who bought the food were the judges,' said Pretorius.
The day started in the morning and tasting time was noon.

The overall winner of the competition was Monica De Waal from the MST store with her beef and vegetable Potjie. In her words, she won the Potjiekos challenge because her potjie was cooked with love.
One of the runners-up, Engela van Zonten, from The Taste Butchery cooked a biltong and pasta potjie. Another runner-up, Mariette Pretorius cooked an oxtail in red wine potjie.

The organisers said the next potjie challenge is set for September and they want more of the community of The Moot area to participate in the challenge.

Smart surveillance pilot cuts crime and boosts police response
Tshwane metro police, together with MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee, recently visited the Proof of Concept (POC) control room in the Hatfield CID to review the progress of the metro's new high-tech crime prevention initiative. The project uses CCTV technology to detect suspicious activity and enable faster police responses, with plans now underway to expand the network and explore drone use as an additional crime-fighting tool. 'This is to assist with crime prevention and car hijacking to make Tshwane a safer place,' said Coetzee. Security service provider Vumacam spokesperson Alex Bouch said the CCTV project was launched five weeks ago and has already shown promising results. He stated that dispatches to incidents increased from 65 in the first week to 133 by week five. 'This has led to 30 interceptions and 15 arrests, with suspects facing charges ranging from theft and robbery to fraud.' Bouch explained that the system is designed to detect vehicles of interest entering the monitored area, allowing for quick interception by law enforcement. He added that the system also helps safeguard critical infrastructure such as power cables and traffic lights from criminal activity. 'The pilot project is also being used to integrate CCTV monitoring with TMPD's workflows and to train operators to use the system independently.' Bouch said this enables more targeted camera deployments in high-priority areas and faster police response times. Commissioner Yolanda Faro, TMPD Chief of Police, expressed strong support for the initiative, calling it an important step forward in using technology to improve law enforcement. According to the Hatfield CID, they have also already seen tangible benefits from the system. CEO Lucas Luckhoff reported a significant drop in crime year-on-year and an increase in arrests since the pilot began. 'The CCTV network also assists the SAPS with investigations, and we are looking to expand the network further,' he said. 'The system is reputable, and the support from the Vumacam team is world-class, helping the Hatfield CID to manage the precinct effectively.' He said plans are underway to both increase the number of cameras and explore the use of drones as additional crime-fighting tools. Women unite to mark 69 years since iconic march
The Gauteng Provincial Government, in partnership with the Tshwane metro, hosted the annual Women's Day celebration at the Union Buildings on Saturday. Marking the 69th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March, the event was held under the theme 'Building Resilient Economies for All'. The day began with a powerful re-enactment of the march, as the women in the safety and security cluster led a 2.2km procession from Tshwane House, located on the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Madiba streets, to the Union Buildings. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and other government officials joined the march, paying tribute to the courage of the women who fought for freedom. Addressing the crowd at the Union Buildings, Premier Lesufi highlighted the importance of unity and economic empowerment for women. The celebration continued with a music festival featuring an all-female line-up. MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, said the province had made significant strides in creating an enabling environment for women to thrive. 'Over the years, Gauteng has created an enabling environment for women to thrive both in their personal and professional lives. 'Investing in women and girls in areas such as sport, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities will remain one of the province's priorities,' he said. He said they salute the achievements of women over the years, including their pivotal role in transforming the nation, and their contributions to socio-economic development. 'We will continue to honour women from different spheres of life for their remarkable achievements and overcoming challenges and societal barriers.' An on-site government and business expo brought services closer to residents, with organisations such as SARS, Home Affairs, SASSA, the Department of Health and economic development agencies offering assistance and information to attendees. SASSA payment dates for September 2025: What you need to know South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries can start preparing for the upcoming September 2025 grant payments. Here are the official payment dates for September: Old Age Grant: Tuesday, September 2, 2025 Disability Grant: Wednesday, September 3, 2025 All other SASSA grants (including child grants): Thursday, September 4, 2025 SASSA has reminded beneficiaries to avoid rushing to collection points on the first day, as funds will remain available in their accounts until they are needed. All social grants, barring the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, increased in April this year. Delivering the 2025 Budget Speech in Parliament earlier this year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stated that the number of social grant beneficiaries – excluding those receiving the SRD grant – was expected to rise to around 19 million in 2025/26 and 19.3 million in 2027/28 due to a growing population of older persons. Godongwana said that for 2025/26, social grants were allocated approximately R284.7 billion. 'As announced by the President in the State of the Nation Address, the SRD was to be used as a basis for the introduction of a sustainable form of income support for unemployed people. 'The future form and nature of the SRD would be informed by the outcome of the review of active labour market programmes, which was expected to be completed by September 2025. 'The truth was that ours was one of the most comprehensive social safety nets among emerging economies. This reflected our commitment to addressing poverty and inequality, while keeping our spending sustainable,' he said. The grant increases that took effect in April were: Old age grant: increased from R2185 to R2315 War veterans grant: increased from R2205 to R2335 Disability grant: increased from R2185 to R2315 Foster care grant: increased from R1180 to R1250 Care dependency grant: increased from R2185 to R2315 Child support grant: increased from R530 to R560 Grant-in-aid: increased from R530 to R560 In the Budget Review, National Treasury stated that the budget for social grants was increased by R8.2 billion over the medium term to account for higher living costs. 'An amount of R35.2 billion was allocated to extend the payment at the current SRD rate of R370 per month per beneficiary, including administration costs,' the department said.
