Task Force suggestions to boost MSMEs lauded

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) commended the suggestions given by the 'Task Force on Economic Development for Swarna Andhra Pradesh @2047.' President of Chambers Potluri Bhaskara Rao and general secretary B Rajasekhar in a statement here on Sunday stated that the Chambers, for the past few years, has been supporting and promoting the most potential sectors that were now identified by the Task Force. They recalled that the Chambers submitted similar policy inputs from time-to-time to the government such as the development of sector-specific clusters across the State, development of IT/AI hub in Amaravati, industrial parks with plug and play facilities, electronics clusters, food processing parks and clusters, common facilities in existing food processing parks among others. The MSME sector has been going through many issues for the past 6 to 7 years on account of the COVID pandemic, economic slowdown, and global uncertainties. Many units belonging to the sub-sectors such as textiles, food processing, ferro alloys, foundries, granites and others are either sick or on the verge of bankruptcy. They are facing various challenges such as rising production costs on account of high fuel, power, and logistics costs. They recommended to the government to provide financial support to MSMEs during natural calamities through insurance policies as adopted by Tamil Nadu. Such policies can help mitigate the impact of events like floods, earthquakes, or storms, ensuring business continuity and financial stability. They also requested the State government to support the MSME sector by releasing the long-pending incentives to MSMEs and also ensure timely release of incentives in future.

AP Chambers seeks a ban on export of raw human hair

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) has submitted a detailed representation to Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu urging his personal intervention to stop the export of raw human hair, especially non-Remy (comb waste/GAoli/Chutti) hair, to safeguard the domestic human hair industry. In the representation, AP Chambers' president Potluri Bhaskara Rao and general secretary B Rajasekhar highlighted that in the last 20 years, the demand for Non-Remy Hair had gone up exponentially and Chinese buyers were buying huge quantities till 2012-13 from Indian exporters. But in the last 10 years, China has started reducing legal imports by smuggling Non-Remy (Comb Waste Hair) through Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Nepal where it is processed with child labour and again smuggled to China across border to avoid duties. Despite an earlier ban imposed in March 2022 by DGFT, exports resumed shortly after, including by previously blacklisted traders. Non-Remy Hair forms 85 percent of total exports and only 15 percent of hair is Remy Hair, sourced from temples, which is sold in auction/direct sales by temples. They pointed out that the Indian Human Hair Extension and Wig industry, currently valued at Rs 8,000 crore, has the potential to grow to Rs 30,000 crore in the next decade. The industry, which has a major presence in Madepalli and Eluru, provides employment to over 10 lakh women across rural India. AP Chambers also made key suggestions including the export of raw human hair having ITC (HS) Code 05010010 should be strictly prohibited to make it available for Indian hair processors for value-addition, Remy-type hair from temples should not be sold to China or Chinese agents, restrict temple hair auctions only to registered manufacturers/exporters and not to illegal trader to support 'Make it India' initiative of the Union government, establishment of a dedicated research chair for human hair at IIT Chennai to foster R & D, reduction of duties on human hair imported by countries wherever India has any bilateral agreements, incentives or subsidies to hair exported to African countries as they are the biggest consumers of hair and wigs as they will help boost the exports to African countries. Bhaskara Rao emphasised that this is a unique industry that transforms waste into valuable foreign exchange while empowering lakhs of women through rural employment. He requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the human hair industry in Andhra Pradesh and India.

IndiGo urged to launch international connectivity

Vijayawada: A team from IndiGo Airlines, led by its Associate Director – Sales (South India) Saurabh Sachdeva, called on the office-bearers of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) at AP Chambers Office here on Thursday. AP Chambers' team, led by its president Potluri Bhaskara Rao, briefed the IndiGo team on the potential of Vijayawada region and opportunities available for IndiGo in Vijayawada region. Bhaskara Rao thanked IndiGo for launching Vijayawada-Kurnool direct flight. He requested the airline to introduce more direct international connectivity from Vijayawada. One person at least from almost every family in the State is an NRI, he pointed out. According to estimates, there are around five lakh NRIs in the catchment area of Vijayawada. Many family members, parents, and a huge student population are migrating to various countries. The region has a huge potential for more international connectivity to Dubai, Singapore, and other destinations. Before the pandemic, IndiGo operated a direct flight from Vijayawada to Singapore with more than 80 percent occupancy. Besides Amaravati capital city construction works, industrial activity has picked up a lot in the region. With this, the demand for more international connectivity has increased. In the past few months, Vijayawada airport has witnessed 30,000 to 40,000 increases in air passenger traffic. Hence, AP Chambers requests IndiGo to operate direct flights between Vijayawada-Dubai and Vijayawada-Singapore. 'Most of the aircrafts that IndiGo operates from Vijayawada are small aircrafts. We request the airline to operate large aircrafts such as Airbus or Boeing as bigger aircrafts have the capacity to carry 2 to 3 tonnes of belly cargo. IndiGo may start direct flights between Vijayawada-Varanasi, between Vijayawada-Ahmedabad or Surat and between Vijayawada-Kolkata via Visakhapatnam.' IndiGo is requested to explore code-sharing agreements with international flights for flights operating from Vijayawada. IndiGo has code-sharing agreements with international airlines operating from many cities in India. However, IndiGo does not have code-sharing agreements with international airlines for its flights operating from Vijayawada. Code-sharing will help air travellers with seamless booking experience, efficient baggage transfers, and better connectivity to major international destinations. IndiGo Associate Director – Sales for AP & Telangana BVB Chary and Sales Manager for AP Mohit Krishna were part of the discussion.
