Miss Ghost and Tommy? What to know so far about 'Power: Origins' spinoff

The "Power Universe" continues to expand. "Power: Origins," the newest installment to the hit crime series on Starz, is officially in development, the premium cable network announced on July 22. The show will be the fourth spinoff of the television franchise, executive produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. It follows the flagship series "Power," created by Courtney Kemp, which concluded in 2020. It starred actor Omari Hardwick as James "Ghost" St. Patrick − a drug dealer turned businessman trying to navigate his criminal enterprise while building a legitimate reputation in New York City. Other extensions, "Power Book II: Ghost," "Power Book III: Raising Kanan" and "Power Book IV: Force" came soon after. "Force" is centered around Ghost's right-hand man Tommy Egan, played by Joseph Sikora, who took off to Chicago for a new start. More: 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan' star Patina Miller discusses season 4, her return as Raq How many episodes will 'Power: Origins' Season 1 have? "Power: Origins" will focus on the beginnings of Ghost and Tommy, or as showrunner Sascha Penn calls them, "the Power Universe's founding fathers." "Ghost and Tommy's backstories have fueled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I'm thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won't see coming," Penn, also a writer and executive producer, said in a press release. Starz ordered 18 episodes for the highly anticipated prequel. According to Starz, actor Mekai Curtis, who plays protagonist adolescent Kanan Stark on "Raising Kanan," will return to his role in the spinoff. According to The Hollywood Reporter, young Ghost and Tommy have not been cast yet. "A fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the 'Power' franchise, 'Power: Origins' will highlight the unbridled audacity of young men on the rise, determined to become legends in the game," Starz said. Which 'Power' spinoffs are headed to their final seasons? The third and final season of "Power Book IV: Force" is slated to air in the fall, Starz said. "Very grateful to the people over at Starz for keeping it going and listening to the fans, this army of fans around the world," Sikora previously told USA TODAY. The fourth season of "Power Book III: Raising Kanan" aired earlier in 2025. The conclusion to the show has already been shot and will end with Season 5. An air date has not been announced. "There is still an exceptionally intense and action-packed season left for the viewers to experience, and I assure you that the stakes for Kanan and the entire Thomas family have never been higher," Penn wrote in an Instagram post. 15 Black TV Characters Who Deserved A Prequel Series

Vinnie Zuffante A little over a decade ago, habitual media mogul 50 Cent officially dived into the television biz by producing a crime drama series on Starz we know and love today as Power . Following an epic six-season run spanning from 2014 to 2020, the 'Power Universe' was born and led to two spinoffs ( Power Book II: Ghost , Power Book IV: Force ) and a prequel series ( Power Book III: Raising Kanan ) that each received rave reviews. Following the conclusion of Ghost last year, and plans for both Raising Kanan and Force to end by 2026 — both are currently gearing up for finale seasons – it looks like we might be ready for the next chapters in this ongoing saga. Thankfully for the fans, it was reported earlier today (July 22) that two new shows are on the way in the form of a prequel titled Power: Origins and a spinoff set in present day with a working title of Power: Legacy . RELATED: 7 Black Movie Prequels We'd Love To See Get Made Origins , finally telling the story of a young Ghost and Tommy that's been alluded to on pretty much every show in the Power Universe, will also see the return of standout Raising Kanan star Mekai Curtis (seen above). Legacy on the other hand will see the return of present day Tommy (Joseph Sikora) and Ghost's infamous son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) teaming up as it was hinted to in the final moments of the Ghost series finale. More details below, via Deadline : ''Power: Origins' follows Ghost and Tommy as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise, determined to make their mark on the streets of New York City. The show's logline says the new installment is a 'fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time in the Power franchise, which will highlight the unbridled audacity of young men on the rise, determined to become legends in the game.' Deadline understands the lead roles of Tommy and Ghost have yet to be cast. MeKai Curtis will reprise the role of early adult Kanan Stark in the new series, which he has portrayed across all four seasons of 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan.' Franchise executive producer Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson played Kanan in the mothership series. 'Raising Kanan' is set to conclude with its fifth season, which is expected to premiere in 2026. The franchise's first prequel introduced the character Branford 'Breeze' Frady (Shameik Moore), the nephew of street legends Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods), in the Season 4 finale. According to show legend, Breeze plays a significant role in Ghost's budding career as part of New York's criminal underworld. Depending on what happens in the final season of Raising Kanan, Moore could return for Power: Origins.'' As for Legacy , Deadline gave an update last month that confirmed a writer's room was officially open on the series. Details are still mum, so many are wondering if we'll see Tariq heading to Chicago, Tommy making his return to NYC or the pair packing up and going somewhere new altogether. We can't wait to find out! Admittedly, all this prequel talk got us thinking about all the great Black characters in television history who definitely could've shined in their own prequel series. We rounded up 15 fictional faves, used a bit of imagination and concluded that any of these prequel ideas would've been pure gold. Ironically enough, some of the suggestions you'll see below were actually greenlit in some form or fashion. For example, John Diggle had big plans for an Arrow spinoff series, Justice U , before it was officially shelved back in May 2023. The same happened to Tichina Arnold back in the day with a purported Pam spinoff to Martin , as with Taraji P. Henson's planned Cookie spinoff to Empire that never materialized and most recently with the Daria spinoff for the character Jodie that would've been voiced by Tracee Ellis Ross. After six whole years of anticipation, MTVE Studios chose not to move forward with Jodie and said in a March 2024 statement, 'We have loved working with Tracee, Grace and the whole team on creating a film that is full of joy and genre-bending fun with an inclusive, diverse, and incredible cast. We are fully supportive of them finding a home elsewhere and look forward to partnering with them in the future.' …justice for Jodie ! We want Cookie! Oh, and we'll still take whatever Pam is pushing out! Keep scrolling for our choice of Black TV characters we all know and love that could've definitely used some more screen time in their own prequel origin story. Let us know if you agree: Played By: Kim Fields The outfits-per-episode alone would've made her even more of a style icon than what was already established on Living Single . Played By: Gina Torres Nobody gave it up to Syndey Bristow when it came to a beat-down quite like Anna Espinosa. We'd love to see where her training came from, and how she became so evil, before the events of Alias . Played By: Taraji P. Henson That unfiltered mouth would've had us in stitches for seasons! Played By: Tichina Arnold Those who saw the fourth to last Season 5 episode of Martin titled 'Goin' for Mine' got a preview of what this show would've looked like. Who knew they even had opening credits prepared?! Played By: Khandi Alexander A character so good at being bad, we would love to see her early days of espionage. Oh, and the quotables! Played By: Nichelle Nichols Although we no longer have the late Nichelle Nichols with us to give creative direction on a project like this, the thought of her legacy continuing on is a nice idea in itself. Played By: Christopher Judge All we have to say on the idea of a Teal'c prequel, which Judge himself tried to get off the ground, is one thing: 'Indeed!' Played By: D.B. Woodside An origin story about the son of a slain Slayer, raised by her Watcher in efforts to avenge his mom? Count us in! Played By: J. August Richards While Angel was still helping Buffy in Sunnydale, Gunn and his crew were the ones keeping Los Angeles safe. Now that would be a cool story to tell on the small screen! Played By: Richard Biggs We sadly lost the Doc in real life, but anything is possible when you're dealing with sci-fi. We'd be down for anything, as long as there's some tribute to Biggs. Played By: Tituss Burgess Titus is a character that's hilarious in every sense of the word, and we truly believe this potential series would sweep awards season in the comedy categories. Played (Voiced) By: Diahann Carroll A young Black actress with enough charisma to channel the regal Dominique Deveraux during her prime years is something we believe would make the late Diahann very proud. Played (Voiced) By: Jessica Cydnee Jackson We can only hope Tracee finds a home for the series, which was restructured as a TV movie before getting shelved, sooner rather than never. Played By: David Ramsey Justice for Justice U ! That's all there is to it. Played By: LaKeith Stanfield Outside of lead character Earn, played to perfection by Donald Glover, Darius easily had the most interesting character development and side stories. This would be an absolute win. SEE ALSO

Starz greenlights prequel series 'Power: Origins'

July 22 (UPI) -- Cable network Starz announced it has given the greenlight to Power: Origins, a prequel series focused on the lives of Power franchise characters Ghost and Tommy. The show will follow a young Ghost and Tommy as they attempt to make a name for themselves in New York City. Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora originated the roles of James St. Patrick, aka Ghost, and Tommy Egan, respectively, in Power. The network said Power: Origins will have an 18-episode first season and feature the return of MeKai Curtis as Kanan Stark, the role he played in Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson played the older Kanan in Power. "I'm excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the Power Universe's founding fathers," Sascha Penn, the new series' showrunner, writer and executive producer, said in the announcement. "Ghost and Tommy's backstories have fueled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I'm thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won't see coming." Power: Origins will mark the fifth series in the franchise, following Power, Power Book II: Ghost, which follows Ghost's son Tariq, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, featuring Curtis as a young Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force, starring Sikora as an adult Tommy in Chicago. "Our fans have been asking for Ghost and Tommy's origins story since we first met them in Power -- and with the launch of this series, we're delivering in a big way," said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz. "This marks an electrifying new chapter in the franchise's evolution as we dive deep into the legacy of these iconic characters and the explosive moments that shaped their path."

Power Book IV: Force Season 3 – Release date rumors, cast updates and what to expect next

By Aman Shukla Published on July 19, 2025, 17:30 IST Last updated July 19, 2025, 09:54 IST Man, Power Book IV: Force has fans buzzing! Tommy Egan's wild ride through Chicago's drug scene has kept us glued to our screens with its raw energy, crazy plot twists, and that classic Power vibe. After Season 2's jaw-dropping finale in November 2023, everyone's dying to know what's next. So, let's dive into the latest on Season 3's release date, cast changes, and what we can expect from Tommy's final chapter in the Windy City. Release Date Rumours for Power Book IV: Force Season 3 Starz gave the green light for Season 3 back in December 2023, but they're keeping the exact premiere date under wraps for now. Word is, filming started in February 2024 and wrapped up in July 2024. Joseph Sikora, our main man Tommy, hinted at a fall 2025 release, which lines up with the Power franchise's usual schedule. Think somewhere between August and November 2025—that's the sweet spot, especially since Power Book II: Ghost Season 4, Part 2 hits in September 2025, and Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 is expected early next year. Starz dropped a teaser trailer on June 20, 2025, which has fans hyped and points to that fall window. Keep your eyes peeled on Starz's socials for the official date once post-production's done. Cast Updates: Who's Returning and Who's Out? Season 3 will be the final chapter for Power Book IV: Force , promising a dramatic conclusion to Tommy's Chicago saga. The core cast is expected to return, with some notable absences due to Season 2's deadly twists. Here's the rundown: Joseph Sikora as Tommy Egan : The heart of the series, Tommy is back to solidify his grip on Chicago's drug trade while facing mounting threats. Isaac Keys as Diamond Sampson : A key ally and rival, Diamond's dynamic with Tommy will likely drive much of the season's tension. Kris D. Lofton as Jenard Sampson : Diamond's brother, whose conflicts with Tommy could escalate further. Shane Harper as Vic Flynn : Vic's role as a mole for Tommy and Diamond sets up intriguing possibilities. Anthony Fleming III as JP Gibbs : Tommy's brother, whose storyline may deepen in the final season. Lucien Cambric as D-Mac : D-Mac's loyalty was cemented with a bold move in Season 2, but his actions could bring new enemies. Adrienne Walker as Shanti 'Showstopper' Page : A strategic player in Tommy's circle. Manuel Eduardo Ramirez as Miguel Garcia : Miguel's growing power will challenge Tommy's ambitions. Carmela Zumbado as Mireya Garcia : Tommy's love interest, whose fate remains uncertain after her brother's violent reaction in Season 2. Miriam A. Hyman as Stacy Marks : The U.S. Attorney is hot on Tommy's trail, raising the stakes. Michael Rainey Jr. as Tariq St. Patrick: Expected to appear in a guest role, tying Force to the broader Power universe. Notably, several characters won't return after Season 2's bloodshed, including Tommy Flanagan as Walter Flynn, Cayen Martin as Leon, Guy Van Swearingen as Uncle Paulie, and Dominic DeVore as Brendan Doyle. The fate of Lili Simmons as Claudia Flynn is uncertain after her stabbing in the Season 2 finale, but her survival could spark major drama if she returns. What to Expect in Season 3 As the final season, Power Book IV: Force Season 3 is set to deliver an explosive end to Tommy Egan's Chicago journey. The Season 2 finale, 'Power Powder Respect,' left fans with plenty of questions. Tommy's coalition is fractured, with rival gangs and the Feds closing in. Here's what we can anticipate based on teasers and the show's trajectory: Tommy's Power Struggle: Tommy's quest to become Chicago's drug kingpin will intensify. He'll need to outmaneuver rivals like Miguel Garcia while poaching customers to solidify his empire. Expect strategic alliances and betrayals as he navigates this dangerous game. Personal Stakes: Tommy's relationship with Mireya is in jeopardy after her brother's interference. The teaser hints that Tommy has moved past his initial rage, but whether Mireya is alive or dead remains a key mystery. His personal sacrifices could be a central theme. Ties to the Power Universe: With Power Book II: Ghost wrapping up in 2024, Season 3 may include crossovers, especially with Tariq St. Patrick's guest appearance. There's also buzz about a potential new spinoff, Power: Legacy , which could feature Tommy and Tariq, suggesting Season 3 might set up future stories. High-Stakes Action: Expect the signature Power mix of intense action, turf wars, and shocking deaths. Showrunner Gary Lennon has promised that Season 3 will 'question everything we thought we knew of Tommy's world,' hinting at game-changing twists. Claudia's Fate: If Claudia survives her prison stabbing, her return could shake up the Chicago underworld, especially given her betrayal in Season 2. ‘Power': Starz Opening Writers Room On New Spinoff As ‘Origins' Development Progresses

EXCLUSIVE: Amid Starz's push to build original IP with a raft of fully owned series in development following the split from Lionsgate, the network is also staying in business with its former sister studio on the flagship Power franchise and its continuous expansion. There is not one but two Power offshoots in the works, Deadline can reveal exclusively. The latest, which is currently untitled, comes from Gary Lennon (Power Book IV: Force) and Kendra Chapman (Power Book IV: Force), who executive produce, with Lennon also serving as showrunner. The writers room for the project, also known as Power: Legacy, is expected to open soon, sources said. More from Deadline 'Magic City: An American Fantasy' Docuseries Gets Premiere Date On Starz 'The Hunting Wives' Moves To Netflix For U.S. Following Lionsgate & Starz Separation; Premiere Date Set 'The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast' Renewed For Season 2 At Starz Featuring Interview With Terry Flenory No other details are available; however, Joseph Sikora and Michael Rainey Jr. are expected to lead the new series set in the present timeline, reprising their Power franchise roles of Tommy Egan and Tariq St. Patrick, respectively, we hear. The new offshoot is joining the prequel series Power: Origins, set after the events of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. In development since last year, Origins follows the early years of the beloved duo of Ghost and Tommy, who were played by Omari Hardwick and Sikora in the mothership series. Sascha Penn (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), who has been attached from the get-go as executive producer, will serve as showrunner on the prequel spinoff, whose development has progressed, with a writers' room currently open and its pickup chances looking good, we hear. If/when Origins is greenlighted, it would mark the fourth spinoff of the Power franchise, preceded by Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which recently aired its fourth season and has filmed a fifth and final season; and Power Book IV: Force, which has wrapped filming its third and final season, coming later this year. They all followed the mothership Power series, which ran for 6 seasons. Power: Legacy is expected to follow the events of Force, as Ghost concluded its run last year. Essentially, this could open up a crossover for either Tommy or Tariq to travel to Chicago (Force) or New York City (Power, Power Book II: Ghost), OR somewhere completely new. Series executive producer and star Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson has previously shown interest in expanding the franchise across the pond in London, but it could honestly be set anywhere. Sikora has previously appeared in Ghost as Uncle Tommy in Seasons 1 and 3. Penn, who created Raising Kanan, teased in a recent interview with Deadline that the conclusion of the franchise's first prequel could herald the return of Ghost and Tommy to be played by new, younger actors set in their early years. 'We're in the lab on Origins right now, and we're figuring that out and trying to see what it looks like, or what it could look like. I'm super excited about that show, and the world it opens up. Your timeline is correct. Ghost and Tommy start to appear in Kanan's life, sometime fairly soon, they're still very young during Raising Kanan,' Penn shared last month. With the addition of Shameik Moore in the Season 4 finale of Raising Kanan as Branford 'Breeze' Frady, the nephew of street legends Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods), it sets up the possibility for Ghost and Tommy to appear before the screen goes dark. Ghost, Tommy, and Kanan (Jackson) were in the drug game together, with Breeze taking the trio under his wing. Ghost eventually kills Breeze in the late 90s, which later inspires Tariq to kill his father. The Power universe expansion fits Starz's plan of keeping profit margins healthy by ending series after several seasons and launching new spinoffs. 'You look at the [Power] map and say, 'OK, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost,' CEO Jeff Hirsch said last year. In addition to its various Power spinoffs, Starz also has the Outlander and Spartacus franchises, with prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiering August 8 and the Spartacus follow-up Spartacus: House of Ashur slated to debut later this year. The Power franchise is executive produced by the mothership creator and showrunner, Courtney A. Kemp, through her production company End of Episode, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson through G-Unit Film and Television, and Mark Canton through Canton Entertainment. Lionsgate Television is the studio.
