Petronas study awards for 100 top Sabah students

The 2024 SPM school leavers from diverse backgrounds received full sponsorships to pursue studies in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, marketing and other relevant courses at Universiti Teknologi Petronas as well as top local and international institutions in the UK, Australia, Japan and South Korea. The selection process was conducted rigorously from nearly 9,000 applications nationwide, based on academic excellence, leadership potential and active involvement in extracurricular activities. The sponsorship award ceremony was officiated by Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, accompanied by Petronas Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Datuk Bacho Pilong. Hajiji thanked the national oil corporation for its continued commitment to developing human capital in Sabah through quality education and skills training programmes. 'The State Government, through the Sabah Maju Jaya 1.0 Development Plan, places strong emphasis on human capital development. The ceremony also honoured 20 new recipients of sponsorships for the Malaysian Skills Diploma programme in Industrial Instrumentation and Control at the Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC). The event witnessed the official awarding of the Code of Practice for TVET Programme Accreditation (COPTPA) from the Department of Skills Development to KTC for its diploma programme. This recognition affirms that the skills training provided by KTC meets national standards and industry requirements. Minor scholarships were awarded to another 29 secondary school students in Sabah for the 2025/2026 session, bringing the total number of recipients this year to 40. Since its introduction in 2023 through a collaboration between Petronas Floating LNG, the Sabah State Education Department and Yayasan Sabah, some 120 students have benefited from the initiative. Bacho expressed pride in seeing the state's younger generation move forward with confidence and receive recognition for their efforts and achievements. The selection process was conducted rigorously from nearly 9,000 applications nationwide, based on academic excellence, leadership potential and active involvement in extracurricular activities. The sponsorship award ceremony was officiated by Sabah State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Panglima Kadzim M Yahya, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor, accompanied by Petronas Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Datuk Ir Bacho Pilong. In his speech, Hajiji expressed his gratitude and congratulations to Petronas for its continued commitment to developing human capital in Sabah through quality education and skills training programmes. Petronas awards 110 Sarawakian students with scholarships

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Petronas has awarded education scholarships worth RM28 million to 110 high-performing Sarawakian students to pursue tertiary studies at top local and international universities. Bernama reported that the students would pursue courses in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, law, and other industry-related fields at Universiti Teknologi Petronas and leading institutions in the UK and Australia. The recipients, who were selected from nearly 9,000 applicants, excelled in their 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. Apart from their strong academic performance, they were also chosen based on their leadership potential and active participation in co-curricular activities. The scholarships were awarded under Petronas's flagship Powering Knowledge programme. State women, early childhood and community wellbeing development minister Fatimah Abdullah thanked Petronas for its continued investment in Sarawak's youth and said such efforts support the state's goal of becoming a high-income, developed region by 2030. 'The relationship between Petronas and Sarawak is long-standing and deeply rooted, and the efforts by the former consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the true value of human capital,' she said in a speech at an event in Kuching. Since its inception in 1975, Petronas's education sponsorships have benefitted over 40,000 Malaysian students, including more than 1,300 Sarawakian students.

110 S'wak students get PETRONAS sponsorship for tertiary studies
KUCHING: Some 110 Sarawakian students have received sponsorships totalling RM28mil from PETRONAS for their tertiary studies. The outstanding 2024 SPM school leavers from diverse backgrounds will pursue degrees in engineering, economics, law and other industry-related courses at local and overseas universities under the PETRONAS Powering Knowledge education sponsorship. State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah welcomed the national oil corporation's continuous commitment to developing Sarawakian talent. "By investing in the education and development of Sarawakian youth, PETRONAS is helping us lay the foundation for a future that is resilient, competitive and inclusive," she said at the sponsorship presentation ceremony here on Tuesday (July 29). Fatimah, who was representing Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, said this aligned with the state government's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which aimed to position Sarawak as a high-income developed state by 2030. "At the heart of this vision is our focus on building talent and expanding opportunities across all levels of education, from early childhood to tertiary, from academic pathways to technical and vocational training. "We are determined to ensure that every Sarawakian has the opportunity to thrive and move forward," she said. Fatimah also said the education sponsorship was a platform to shape future professionals and leaders who would contribute to Sarawak's and Malaysia's progress. "What we hope to see in return is not only graduates with academic excellence, but individuals who come back with a sense of responsibility and purpose," she added. PETRONAS senior general manager (human capital expertise) Akmal Niza Ahmad said the Powering Knowledge initiative supported a wide range of programmes to empower Malaysians from all walks of life. "This is part of our commitment, reinforcing how we continue to invest in future talent for the organisation, the industry and the nation," she said. Since its inception in 1975, the PETRONAS education sponsorship has benefitted over 40,000 Malaysian students.
