110 S'wak students get PETRONAS sponsorship for tertiary studies

The Star29-07-2025
KUCHING: Some 110 Sarawakian students have received sponsorships totalling RM28mil from PETRONAS for their tertiary studies.
The outstanding 2024 SPM school leavers from diverse backgrounds will pursue degrees in engineering, economics, law and other industry-related courses at local and overseas universities under the PETRONAS Powering Knowledge education sponsorship.
State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah welcomed the national oil corporation's continuous commitment to developing Sarawakian talent.
"By investing in the education and development of Sarawakian youth, PETRONAS is helping us lay the foundation for a future that is resilient, competitive and inclusive," she said at the sponsorship presentation ceremony here on Tuesday (July 29).
Fatimah, who was representing Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, said this aligned with the state government's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which aimed to position Sarawak as a high-income developed state by 2030.
"At the heart of this vision is our focus on building talent and expanding opportunities across all levels of education, from early childhood to tertiary, from academic pathways to technical and vocational training.
"We are determined to ensure that every Sarawakian has the opportunity to thrive and move forward," she said.
Fatimah also said the education sponsorship was a platform to shape future professionals and leaders who would contribute to Sarawak's and Malaysia's progress.
"What we hope to see in return is not only graduates with academic excellence, but individuals who come back with a sense of responsibility and purpose," she added.
PETRONAS senior general manager (human capital expertise) Akmal Niza Ahmad said the Powering Knowledge initiative supported a wide range of programmes to empower Malaysians from all walks of life.
"This is part of our commitment, reinforcing how we continue to invest in future talent for the organisation, the industry and the nation," she said.
Since its inception in 1975, the PETRONAS education sponsorship has benefitted over 40,000 Malaysian students.

Klang Valley to remain mainstay of industrial hubs

Knight Frank Malaysia said that between 2020 and 2024, annual industrial transaction values in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru grew by an 18% and 40% four-year compounded annual growth rate, respectively. PETALING JAYA: Klang Valley will likely remain the largest industrial hub in the country on the back of its relatively more mature industrial parks, infrastructure and strategic access to ports, according to Kenanga Research. Specifically on Johor, the research house gathered that its industrial and data centre boom commenced with the launch of YTL Green Data Centre Park in Kulai in August 2022. This kick-started interests by large multinationals in the state, further fuelling its investments into that space, it noted. The research house said with the officiation of Johor's Forest City Special Financial Zone in September 2024 and Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone in January 2025, in addition to the increase in cross-border activities with Singapore stemming from the upcoming launch of the Rapid Transit System link, it believes that activities and investments into the state could remain buoyant in the near-to-medium term. According to property consultancy company Knight Frank Malaysia, between 2020 and 2024, annual industrial transaction values in Klang Valley and Johor Baru (including Kulai) grew by an 18% and 40% four-year compounded annual growth rate, respectively. While this could be attributed to pent-up demand coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in with the increase of capital investments injected into the mentioned regions, Kenanga Research said. Kenanga Research believes Penang remains a hot spot for industrial activity, mostly dominated by the technology and semiconductor sectors. The brokerage recently co-organised a real estate event with Knight Frank on the property consultancy's exclusive launch of its half-yearly real estate highlights for the first half of 2025. Focusing on high-rise residential trends, Knight Frank highlighted that transaction volumes and values in Kuala Lumpur had picked up mostly in 2022, coming out of the pandemic. Knight Frank found it worth noting as well that the growth of average transaction values had outpaced volumes, reflecting a higher appetite by homebuyers for higher-priced homes. From Kenanga Research's checks among property developers and mortgage lenders, the pick-up in transaction volumes in 2022 could have been made up by more affordable offerings (RM300,000 to RM500,000) which led market launches at that time, owing to development being stalled by the movement control orders between 2020 and 2021. On the data centre front, there was a surge in data centre investments post-Covid-19, with total investment reaching RM160bil in 2024, more than triple the amount in 2023. However, the sector is now entering a more mature execution phase of announced plans, Knight Frank noted. In the first half of 2025, digital investments totalled RM42.6bil versus RM66.2bil in the similar period last year, with over 70% allocated to data centres and cloud infrastructure. While Johor continues to lead in data centre development, Klang Valley has also seen healthy activity.

Australia's new measures to strengthen education ties with Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Australia's newly announced measures to boost Southeast Asian student enrolments from 2026 will create more opportunities for Malaysians to study at its universities and further strengthen the countries' longstanding higher education ties. Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, said the new measures from next year aim to attract more international students from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. She said Malaysia and Australia share a longstanding partnership in higher education, with strong institutional links, student mobility, and alumni networks built over decades. "Australia remains one of the most popular destinations for Malaysian students with more than 13,000 Malaysians currently studying in Australia. "The Australian government is prioritising Southeast Asia, this is great news for Malaysian students wanting a high-quality Australian education and student experience. "New efforts to boost the number of students will strengthen our people-to-people links and encourage more investment in Malaysia," she said in a statement. To date, around 500,000 Malaysians have pursued their studies with Australia's world-class education providers. Besides that, four Australian universities – Monash University Malaysia, Curtin University, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Wollongong – operate campuses in Malaysia, reflecting the strength of our education ties. On Aug 4, the Australian Government announced it would increase the number of international student places next year and introduce new measures to boost enrolments from Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Under the new framework, a National Planning Level of 295,000 international student places will be introduced for 2026, representing a 9 per cent increase from 270,000 places in 2025. The Australian High Commission stated that Australia's public universities will be able to apply to increase their international student allocations for 2026, by demonstrating an increased engagement with Southeast Asia, through their education offerings, partnerships, campuses, alumni and scholarships. "As part of the reforms, universities will also be required to provide additional student accommodation to ensure both domestic and international students have access to safe and secure student housing. "These changes reflect the Australian government's commitment to building stronger ties with Southeast Asia, consistent with the strategy Invested: Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040," it said.

GrabCar Mandarin Driven By 1.4 Million China Tourists, But Feature On Pause For Now

Subscribe to our FREE Some Malaysians found something new to be unhappy about today and this time it was a feature on the GrabCar application. Aside from the ability to choose vehicle categories when booking a ride, Grab added an option for customers to select a driver that is fluent in Mandarin, at a pricier rate, of course. READ MORE: Reacting to the (unnecessary) outcry, Grab issued a statement to say the feature is now on pause. But why was it there to begin with? Simple: Numbers don't lie. GrabCar Mandarin was an experiment because data showed 'This experiment was crucial to test the sustainability and demand among tourists, as we work towards introducing support for other additional languages,' Grab said. GrabCar Mandarin was just the company testing an expansion of their language-based ride types, to cater to the needs of tourists visiting Malaysia. 'We have since paused the experiment to review our findings and to plan for future rollout of other language-ride offerings that are not only guided by tourism data, but also through an internally-conducted language-proficiency survey with our driver-partners community.' Once operational, the language-based service will be open for sign-up to all qualified Grab drivers, regardless of background. 'We value all the feedback that was shared with us and will continue engaging with our community as we explore additional earning opportunities for driver-partners. We remain committed to building an inclusive platform that supports national goals and the livelihoods of our partners, while catering to the needs of consumers.'
