Pradyot urges restraint as row erupts over DM's refusal to meet TIPRA Motha leaders

TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has appealed to his supporters not to target the Chakma community after a senior bureaucrat from the tribe allegedly refused to meet with leaders of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The party claimed that Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kumar Chakma, the first direct recruit to the IAS from the Chakma tribe - Tripura's fourth-largest indigenous group - had declined to meet with Pradyot Kishore and TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia at his official residence in Udaipur on Sunday evening. The leaders had sought an audience to discuss urgent matters concerning welfare and development. The incident triggered sharp political reactions and a social media backlash. Opposition leaders criticised the DM's conduct, with CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and Congress leader and former Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman accusing the BJP government of failing to rein in the bureaucracy. Mr. Choudhury went so far as to compare the attitude of some senior civil servants in the State to British-era ICS officers. 'The BJP has emboldened bureaucrats to disregard public representatives and the people they serve,' he said. TIPRA Motha supporters took to social media to voice their discontent, with some posts targeting the Chakma community as 'infiltrators' and accusing them of undermining the unity of Tripura's indigenous peoples. Amid rising tensions, the party's youth wing issued a 76-hour ultimatum demanding the DM's removal, threatening to lock government offices in Gomati district if the demand was not met. The youth leaders also condemned what they termed 'disrespect' shown to the royal scion. In a video message shared on Monday, Mr. Debbarman called for restraint. 'I appeal to all to behave reasonably and take things positively. I have support in the Chakma community as well. I love everyone irrespective of community identity,' he said. Mr. Debbarman reiterated the need for unity among indigenous communities and cautioned against divisive rhetoric. 'We should not make this about any community,' he said.

Pradyot discusses investment proposals for TTAADC at investors summit in Delhi

Agartala: Tripura's royal descendant and BJP govt ally founder, Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, announced on Saturday his participation in discussions regarding investments in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) during the 'Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025' held in New Delhi, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. "Had a very productive meeting with Mukesh Ambani , chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, and Harshavardhan Neotia, chairman of Ambuja Cement. Quite a few investments have been proposed, and many of them will focus on the tribal areas," he said. Speaking about northeast India's economic prospects, Pradyot said if the region achieves even half of its potential through the summit, it would establish itself as a significant economic centre both nationally and internationally. Reiterating PM Narendra Modi's 'Act East' policy, Pradyot said, "It's about actively engaging with the east, not merely looking eastward. If the northeast is connected to this dynamic region, it will benefit not only the northeast but the entire country."

Bengali voters from hills join TIPRA Motha ahead of village commitee polls

Agartala: Bengali residents from hill areas are now joining TIPRA Motha party, led by Pradyot Kishore Debbarman , creating interest ahead of village committee election in Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (ADC). On Tuesday, 32 Bengali and 50 tribal families became members of TIPRA Motha at Pichli Ghat Bazaar in Raima Valley constituency of Gandacherra in Dhalai district, said Motha's Dhalai district committee vice-president Sarjoy Tripura. TIPRA Motha, currently allied with ruling BJP in the Tripura govt, represents indigenous tribes. In recent assembly elections, they independently contested 42 seats, including 22 general seats with non-tribal candidates, though without significant success. The party has supporters from minority Muslims, Manipuri communities, and some Bengalis. Motha founder Pradyot said, "TIPRA Motha welcomes every community without ethnic consideration since the beginning. It is fighting for the rights of the indigenous people of Tripura and development of the state. But a section of people are deliberately creating confusion." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Party officials said CPM's emotional manipulation of tribals for 40 years resulted in underdevelopment in ADC areas. Congress also struggled to establish presence in hills despite governing for five years with Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti. "In 2018 assembly polls, Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) won eight seats and BJP secured victory in 11 of 20 tribal constituencies. But both the parties lost their grip among tribals because of non-compliance of their poll promises, which gave birth of TIPRA Motha in 2021 — three months before ADC elections and it won majority seats," a Motha leader said. Despite limited state govt support for ADC development, the party founder has initiated personal projects. Over four years, ADC has seen notable improvements, unprecedented in previous times, said Pramod Ranjan Tripura, a Motha leader. Tipra Citizens Federation (TCF) Raima Valley block committee president Joy Kumar Das said, "The people of Tripura have endured years of neglect in the past regimes. Since Motha won ADC, we've driven transformative projects — building roads, expanding electricity access, ensuring clean water, and advancing education." He added, "Initially, Motha was an indigenous-only party, but TCF has changed that narrative, and today, thousands of Bengalis are joining our movement for progress. Bengali families who previously supported other political parties, now they are convinced by the functioning of TIPRA Motha."

Pradyot: Support locals to push out illegal B'deshis from Tripura

Agartala: Pradyot Kishore Debbarman , Tripura's royal scion and founder of Tipra Motha, an ally of BJP, on Sunday claimed that if the local boys were asked, they would defend India and push out illegal Bangladeshis from entering the country. Pradyot's statement came soon after four Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at the Agartala railway station. He further said illegal Bangladeshis are entering the country every day, and for every five of them apprehended, a thousand others get away because of the rough terrain and porous border. "Tripura is going through a demographic change once again. Both Assam and Tripura, and parts of Meghalaya, have become transit points for illegal migration to the Northeast and the rest of India," Pradyot said.
