Tripura political parties gear up for Indigenous Peoples' Day

Agartala: As Tripura gears up to observe International Indigenous Peoples' Day on Aug 9, the political landscape is abuzz with activity. TIPRA Motha, BJP , and Congress have announced separate programmes and rallies to mark the occasion. With tribal sentiments at the centre of these events and mass gatherings planned across the state, law enforcement agencies are under considerable pressure to maintain peace and order — especially with the Independence Day just days away. TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has declared Aug 9 as a day of cultural pride and political assertion. The party has urged all tribal communities across the state to celebrate by wearing traditional attire, preparing indigenous dishes like Chakwi, Gudok, and Mosdeng, and embracing their distinct cultural identity. "Go out on that day wearing your traditional attire proudly! Cook our indigenous meals at home or share them with friends at work, school, and college. Be proud of your identity," Pradyot said in a Facebook message. He also urged supporters to join "Homchang rallies" across the state in the evening to protest what he described as the denial of constitutional rights by the state election commission, which has yet to conduct village committee elections in Sixth Schedule areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Citing the Tripura govt's inaction despite high court directives, Pradyot announced plans to approach the Supreme Court to seek early village council elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Meanwhile, the Congress has also announced its observance of the day but will avoid large rallies, opting instead for symbolic events and localised gatherings in solidarity with indigenous people. The BJP Janajati Morcha is organising a massive rally at Rabindra Bhavan in Agartala, with tribal supporters expected from across the state. Chief minister Manik Saha's presence will mark a major show of strength by the ruling party. Police headquarters have issued advisories to district officials to coordinate closely with all stakeholders, ensuring that the day's events remain peaceful and incident-free.

ECI invites TIPRA Motha delegation to discuss illegal migrant issue

Agartala, July 20 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited the tribal-based regional party TIPRA Motha, an ally of the ruling BJP, to discuss the pressing issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh to Tripura on July 23 at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi. Motha founder and Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, revealing the development here today, said that he has been fighting consistently for the safe future of the indigenous people of the state beyond communities. But in recent years, infiltration from Bangladesh and Myanmar has emerged as the biggest threat to Tripura. The settlers of both tribal and non-tribal since the accession of Tripura with the Indian Union in October 1949 are the indigenous in the state, and thereafter, before the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, they were also considered the legal settlers of the state. Whoever crossed over to Tripura after March 1971, as per Indian law, are illegal immigrants, and somehow they managed to stay in the state, thereby creating a problem for the genuine citizens. However, soon after the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, the Indian government had issued an order to all the states and territorial governments to flush out illegal immigrants, but it didn't work in Tripura. Thereafter, in 2017 and 2021, similar orders were issued, but the then left front and BJP governments, respectively, neither made it public nor executed the orders. The Ministry of Home Affairs, on May 19 this year, issued directives to all the state governments following the Pahalgam incident to identify illegal migrants and deport them to their respective countries. Accordingly, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Haryana have started implementing the order. Tripura has also formed a special task force to deal with illegal migrants and prevent infiltration. To identify the illegal migrants and their deportation, TIPRA Motha has launched a sustained campaign at the community level and demanded that the ECI go for an extensive revision of the electoral roll like Bihar. Following persuasion, ECI invited a delegation of TIPRA Motha to discuss the issue. Terming it a 'huge victory,' Pradyot asserted that ECI's invitation validates the concerns repeatedly raised by his party over the demographic and security implications of unchecked cross-border migration. 'We are trying to protect our next generation and looking beyond party politics. This is not just a fight of the TIPRA Motha party but of every Indian,' Pradyot said, adding that he also made a passionate appeal to rise above party politics and stand united against illegal migration, emphasising the need for a collective and nationalistic approach to the issue rather than treating it as a political agenda. Pradyot hints at exiting coalition over accord implementation delay

Agartala: Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, founder of the TIPRA Motha Party and a key ally of the BJP in Tripura's govt, expressed dissatisfaction with the central and state govts and indicated a potential withdrawal from the coalition. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a Facebook live on Tuesday, Pradyot reiterated his position, stating he would prefer to leave the ruling alliance rather than retain power if the Tiprasa accord, signed in April 2023 before the general election, was not implemented. He noted that initial discussions with the Centre were positive, but progress stalled thereafter. "It has been 18 months, we are waiting, and I feel this is high time for a forward movement in this direction," Pradyot said. He said his party would soon launch a helpline number to facilitate action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, whom he identified as the biggest threat to Tripura's indigenous communities. "I have instructed the leaders of my party to have the helpline circulated among the people on short notice. We can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory as if we allow them today, tomorrow they will use the resources that are meant for our children," Pradyot said. He added that the initiative aims to expedite information gathering on Bangladeshi nationals, emphasising that no one should take the law into their own hands. "We are waiting for the implementation of the Tiprasa accord. We entered into the ruling alliance only because we had been promised that the accord would be implemented. If I am unable to deliver what I promised to my people, then I have no right to enjoy power. I already had a word with the ministers who represent my party and the majority of the MLAs," he said.

'Can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory': BJP ally Pradyot Debbarman threatens exit from Tripura govt, demands action on tiprasa accord

AGARTALA: BJP's ally in Tripura government and the major political force in tribal areas and hills, TIPRA Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, expressed his dissatisfaction over the role of central and state governments, and hinted at walking out of the government. In a Facebook live, Pradyot reiterated his stand and said that he would rather walk away from the ruling coalition than enjoy power if the Tiprasa (tribal) accord, signed last year before the general election, is not implemented. He claimed the talks with the central government were very positive, but after that, things stalled. 'It has been 18 months, we are waiting, and I feel this is high time for a forward movement in this direction,' Pradyot stated. He announced that his party would soon launch a helpline number as a means of communication for action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, which, according to him, emerged as the biggest threat to the indigenous people and communities of Tripura. 'I have instructed the leaders of my party to have the helpline circulated among the people on short notice. We can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory as if we allow them today, tomorrow they will use the resources that are meant for our children,' Pradyot said. He explained that this is basically an attempt on our part to expedite the information gathering on Bangladeshi nationals. No one needs to take the law into their own hands. If someone is found entering Tripura, they can dial our number, and our leaders will communicate the issue with the administration for lawful action. 'We are waiting for the implementation of the Tiprasa accord. We entered into the ruling alliance only because we had been promised that the accord would be implemented. If I am unable to deliver what I promised to my people, then I have no right to enjoy power. I already had words with the ministers who represent my party and the majority of the MLAs,' he mentioned. 'I understand that after the Pahalgam terror attack, it became the top priority of the government. I still have high hopes that Union Home Minister will keep his promise. But, I genuinely feel something is wrong is going on. In Delhi, the talks are very positive, but after that, things get stuck.' Pradyot added.
