Mahavatar Narsimha movie review: Our gods really know how to do Avenger thing
The story of Bhakt Prahlad is one of the most joyful amongst all our Puranas, with its battle between good and evil, gods and demons, strong and weak. It is epic for all the right reasons. Having been blessed by a clutch of boons by Lord Brahma after a 'ghor tapasaya' (difficult penance), the mighty 'asur' Hiranakashyap has become invincible. The 'devtas' have fled, leaving him free to wreak havoc in the universe. The only one with the courage to stand up to him is his own son, Prahlad, whose devotion to Lord Vishnu stays unwavering through all the troubles he has to face on his father's orders. There have been many iterations of this beloved story. No surprises that this latest version, from Hombale Productions' (KGF, Kantara) goes big: everything is scaled up massively, castles, mountains, skies, the rakshasas and their weapons. I saw the 2D version, and while some of it is impressive, the proportions seemed a bit off: in one scene, a gigantic nose on one side of the screen towers over the tiny figures below. And despite the size, the animation doesn't feel as sophisticated as it should, in 2025, especially since we've got so used to watching all those spiffy Marvel outings. The other problem is the antiquated way the characters are made to speak. Prahlad, who is more-fair-skinned than his young demon counterparts, lilts rather than speaks (an abiding problem with most of our animation films), and uses such words as 'apitu', 'kadapi' etc. So do the elders. If you want to reel in today's kids, how about contemporising the writing? Some of the episodes, like the one in which Prahlad is saved from the wrath of angry elephants, are fun. In fact, whenever fun becomes the strongest element and the veneration is dialled back, the film springs to life. The last 30 minutes are a humdinger, where relentless pace and grand computer graphics unite to create a most kinetic, satisfying finale: Vishnu avatar Narasimha, half-lion half human, appears, and sets about taking Hiranyakashyap apart. Mahavatar Narsimha movie trailer: The end comes even as the vardaan's (boon) promise stays unbroken. Not in day, or night (it's evening), not in home or outside (it's the door-sill), not on land or water (it's Narsimha's thigh), and with an almighty roar, Hiranyakashyap becomes history. Or rather, finds honourable place in our varied, colourful mythological cannon, the most engaging in the world. The climax is world-class, even if ultra-violent, with body parts and blood flowing generously. Trigger warning for small kids. And yourself, if you are faint-hearted. But hey, demons being torn to pieces feels as if justice has been done: our gods really know how to do the Avengers thing. Multilingual animation in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam Mahavatar Narsimha movie director: Ashwin Kumar Mahavatar Narsimha movie rating: 2.5 stars

Dy CM asks JD(U) minister to follow alliance dharma
Patna: Senior BJP leader and deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha had a verbal spat with JD(U) minister Ashok Kumar Choudhary in the NDA legislators' meeting held in the central hall on Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The meeting was held to discuss the floor management during the rest four days of the monsoon session. Sinha targeted Choudhary for not inviting local MLA Prahlad Yadav in the official function of the rural works department at Suryagarha in Lakhisarai, the home district of Sinha, for laying the foundation stones for several development projects last week. Suryagarha comes under Munger Lok Sabha constituency, which is being represented by former JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, who was also present in the function that day. Prahlad, a six-time MLA from Suryagarha, had supported the Nitish govt in the floor test after the JD(U) chief dumped RJD-Cong alliance and formed the NDA govt again with BJP in Jan 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. When contacted, Prahlad justified Sinha's stand. "Hum saath diye hain aur itna alag kijiyega? Alliance dharam ka palan to karna hin chahiye na. Choudhary ji was getting upset and shouting. Vijay ji as well as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had also opposed serving mutton among the supporters that day in the month of Shrawan. Jiski apni jameen nahi aur jo kripa par hai, uspar kya kahna," Prahlad told this newspaper after the ruckus. When asked if he apprehended not getting BJP ticket in the coming election as he had defeated JD(U) candidate Ramanand Mandal in 2020, Prahlad said, "This had always been a BJP seat before Mandal last time. BJP had won this seat thrice." Meanwhile, some of the MLAs, including BJP's Gyanendra Singh Gyanu, also opposed the global tendering for state govt projects by Choudhary, who justified it, leading to a ruckus. Gyanu said the global tendering will cause losses for the NDA in the elections. Some of the MLAs also expressed anger over the way the tap water supply scheme was implemented in the state. Sinha said not just one but all the allies will have to follow the coalition dharma. He also said Prahlad had supported in forming the NDA govt and the top leaders were already aware of it.

Woman cook's suspicious death in Bareilly: Son booked for fraud
In Bareilly district, the son of a retiring woman cook with Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) has been booked for fraud following her mysterious death on the day of her retirement. The incident, unfolding in the 8th Battalion PAC, indicates manipulation aimed at securing a government job under the dependent quota, officials said. For representation only (HT File Photo) According to the complaint filed by Ram Nath Rana, the camp in-charge of the 8th Battalion PAC, Chandra Devi, a cook posted with the battalion, was taken ill on February 27 and was referred to the district hospital. Doctors there advised her son, Prahlad Singh Mehar, to shift her to a more advanced facility. Prahlad then took his mother to a private medical college in Bhojipura, which subsequently referred her to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow. Chandra Devi was admitted to the ICU at SGPGI. On February 28, in the presence of duty officer Chiranshu Kumar, Prahlad got his mother discharged alive at 5:33 PM and obtained a discharge slip. However, in a startling contradiction, the death certificate Prahlad later submitted to the department stated that Chandra Devi had died at 5:23 AM the same day - nearly 12 hours before the official discharge. This clear discrepancy in the timeline led to suspicions of foul play and possible manipulation of records. The motive behind this alleged manipulation appears to be to secure a government job through the compassionate appointment policy reserved for dependents of deceased employees. The Cantt police have registered a case of fraud against Prahlad and begun a thorough investigation into the matter. In the days leading up to her retirement, Chandra Devi had reportedly fallen gravely ill. During this period, Prahlad and his wife allegedly began spreading the story that she had been emotionally devastated after a cow she had nurtured went missing while grazing. According to the family, Chandra Devi stopped eating and drinking following the loss of the cow. The sequence of events and contradictions in the official records fuelled speculation that Chandra Devi's death may have been orchestrated by her own family in a desperate attempt to exploit the government's dependent job policy. Additional superintendent of police, Manush Pareek, said, 'On the basis of the complaint received, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS including 318 (cheating), 336 (forgery). The entire case is being investigated in detail.'

B-SMILE all set to call tenders for North-South twin tunnels
Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), the recently formed special purpose vehicle, is all set to call global tenders for the North-South twin tunnel corridor between Hebbal and Silk Board. This follows the approval for a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model with 40% Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the government to be adopted to build tunnel roads in the city on June 5. If everything goes according to plan, the twin tunnel roads will be open to the public by 2029-30 and the toll on these roads is estimated to cost ₹19/km and will be tolled by the companies that invest and build these roads for the next 30 years. This corridor will be 16.74 km long and is expected to cost ₹17,780 crore. The VGF for this corridor will be ₹9,303 crore. The State Cabinet has already agreed to stand as a guarantor for a loan of ₹19,000 crore towards VGF for North-South and East-West tunnel roads. B-SMILE is in talks with lending agencies including Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), a Government of India undertaking, which is also funding the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR). Work to be split into two packages With the past experience of PRR estimated to cost ₹27,000 crore not attracting any bidders in multiple global tenders, B-SMILE has decided to split the North-South twin tunnel corridor into two packages of roughly around 8.4 km each - North package from Hebbal to Race Course Road and South package from Race Course Road to Silk Board. Two companies will bid and start building these tunnels at two ends simultaneously, which will also ensure the tunnels are ready faster. The tender, likely to be called soon after the government's approval, will fix a 50 month (four years two months) deadline for the completion of the project, said B.S. Prahlad, Technical Director, B-SMILE. Toll estimated at ₹19/km A commuter will pay toll in two stages and toll collection will be completely automated through number plate recognition software, said Mr. Prahlad. 'As per current estimates, the toll will be around ₹19 per km. Since this will be collected after five years, this is not high, and factoring in inflation, it will be comparable to other tolls elsewhere at that date,' he argued. Twin Tunnels The project involves building two unconnected tunnels for each direction of traffic next to each other, each three lanes wide. This essentially means the total length of earth to be tunnelled for the North-South corridor is 33.48 km. Sources said at least eight tunnel boring machines will be deployed simultaneously to speed up work. Each machine is capable of tunnelling 2 km per year, sources said.
