'BJP will win 10 out of 12 zones in MCD standing committee polls', says BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri

BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri (Image credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said on Monday that the party is confident it can secure a majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee elections. Speaking to ANI, Bidhuri said, "We will win the election of the standing committee. The BJP will win 10 out of 12 zones." He further said that the party's presence in the central government, the Delhi administration, and the MCD would ensure that development work continues without hindrance. "The BJP is in the centre, state (Delhi), and MCD, and all the work will go smoothly. The triple-engine government works according to the wishes of the people of Delhi," he added. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) chairmen, deputy chairmen of 12 ward committees, and two standing committee members--each from the South Zone and City-SP Zone--will be elected today. The election of the two standing committee members was necessitated after Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney, who had been elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly, tendered their resignations. Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney were the standing committee members from the Wards Committee South Zone and the Wards Committee City-SP Zone, respectively. "In pursuance of Sub-section (5) of Section 45 of the Act, these vacancies are to be filled up by the concerned wards committees in a meeting from amongst the Councillors of the Wards Committee", a notice from MCD said. The BJP and AAP are making every effort to ensure their candidates win. Out of the 12 ward committees, elections in three zones will be uncontested, as only one candidate is in each zone. The results will shape the standing committee's formation and reveal which party gains majority control to appoint its Chairman. Meanwhile, AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Sunday that the election will reveal the relationship between Congress and the BJP. "Tomorrow, there are elections for the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the MCD Rohini zone. On one side is the panel of BJP-supported IVP, and on the other is the Aam Aadmi Party . The Congress president should tell whom the two Congress councillors will vote for tomorrow. Tomorrow, the relationship between Congress and the BJP will be revealed," he said on X. On May 24, with over two years still to go, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shifted into mission mode for the 2027 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, setting its sights on forming a huge majority in the civic body, a press release from the Aam Aadmi Party said. In a high-level strategy meeting held on Friday, senior AAP leader and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MCD House, Ankush Narang, met with all party councillors to start the preparations. Former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia reviewed ward-level issues in detail and directed councillors to ensure immediate redressing. "Arvind Kejriwal has pioneered alternative work politics across India. Our goal now is to take this model to every household and make it even stronger," said Manish Sisodia.

Three seats of MCD Standing Committee to go to polls on June 2-3; AAP asks its councillors to start preparing for 2027 civic poll

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will hold election to fill the three vacancies in the 18-member Standing Committee on June 2 and 3. The election to the two seats represented by Dakshin Puri councillor Prem Chauhan from Ward 164 and Chandni Chowk councillor Punardeep Singh Sawhney from Ward 74 will be conducted on June 2. Mr. Chauhan and Mr. Sawhney vacated their seats after successfully contesting the Delhi Assembly election on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket from Deoli and Chandni Chowk assembly constituencies respectively. Another seat vacated by Gajender Singh Daral, councillor from Mundka's Ward 35, after winning Mundka assembly constituency in the Delhi Assembly poll on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, will go to poll on June 3. According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act provisions, the respective ward committees, comprising the area councillors, will elect new members to the Standing Committee — the MCD's main decision-making arm with executive powers to grant approval to projects worth over ₹5 crore. With the election, the Standing Committee, which has been in limbo since 2023, will be in full strength. In the present House composition, AAP, which had won the 2022 MCD poll by bagging 134 seats, now has 97 councillors following defections, election of some members to Delhi Assembly and 16 councillors forming an independent bloc – Indraprastha Vikas Party. The BJP now has a majority with 117 seats and the Congress has eight members. 'Focus on next poll' Senior AAP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday held a meeting of AAP councillors. Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MCD House Ankush Narang were also present. He asked the councillors to start preparing for the 2027 MCD poll. 'We must oppose every anti-people move of the BJP and expose them before the public so that in the next MCD election, voters are not misled by false promises, and AAP returns with a strong majority,' said Mr. Sisodia.

MCD picks June 2 as new date to hold ward committee elections

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday announced June 2 as the new date for holding the ward committee elections in its 12 zones. On the same day, the election for two standing committee members from South and City Sadar-Paharganj zones will also take place. According to an MCD notification, "As per Section 51 read with Section 47 of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act , the ward committee shall at its first meeting each year elect one of its members (who is a councillor) as chairman and another member as deputy chairman. The election will be held in accordance with the procedure laid down in DMC Act." Nominations can be filed until May 27 and withdrawn before the commencement of the election proceedings, it added. Due to the India-Pakistan tension, the elections, which were to be held on May 22, were postponed. The standing committee seats were vacated after AAP councillors Purandeep Sawhney from Chandni Chowk and Prem Chauhan from Ambedkar Nagar won the assembly elections in Feb. The last date for filing the nominations is May 27. Of the 12 zones, seven have chairmen from BJP, including Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Narela, Najafgarh, Keshavpuram, Civil Lines and Central. Even when AAP lost the majority prior to the last mayoral elections in April and its number of councillors reduced from 132 in Sept 2024 to 113 in April 2025, the party maintained a majority in the above five zones and the gap was huge. But now, with 15 of its councillors forming a new party, this gap has reduced drastically in South, West and Rohini zones. The election to fill another vacant position in the standing committee is likely on June 3 during a house meeting. Out of the 15 elected members in the 18-member standing committee, BJP has nine while AAP has six members. Once these elections are completed, MCD will work towards constituting the standing committee and conducting its chairman's poll, possibly in June, said officials.
