Delhi: Two MCD standing committee members' elections to be held today

India Gazette02-06-2025
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): The election for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of 12 ward committees, along with two standing committee members -- each from South Zone and City-SP Zone -- will be held on Monday.
The election of the two standing committee members was necessitated after Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney tendered their resignations on being elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Prem Chauhan and Punardeep Singh Sawhney were the members of the standing committee from the Wards Committee South Zone and the Wards Committee City-SP Zone, respectively.
'In pursuance of Sub-section (5) of Section 45 of the Act, these vacancies are to be filled up by the concerned Wards Committees in a meeting from amongst the Councillors of the Wards Committee', a notice from MCD said.
Both BJP and AAP are making every effort to ensure that their candidates win. Out of the 12 ward committees, elections in three zones will be uncontested, as there is only one candidate in each zone.
The results will shape the standing committee's formation and reveal which party gains majority control to appoint its Chairman.
Meanwhile, AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Sunday that the election will reveal the relationship between Congress and BJP.
'Tomorrow, there are elections for the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the MCD Rohini zone. On one side is the panel of BJP-supported IVP, and on the other side is the Aam Aadmi Party. The Congress president should tell whom the two Congress councillors will vote for tomorrow. Tomorrow, the relationship between Congress and the BJP will be revealed,' he said on X.
On May 24, With over two years still to go, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shifted into mission mode for the 2027 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, setting its sights on forming a huge majority in the civic body, a press release from the Aam Aadmi Party said.
In a high-level strategy meeting held on Friday, senior AAP leader and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MCD House Ankush Narang met with all party councillors to start the preparations.
Former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia reviewed ward-level issues in detail and directed councillors to ensure immediate redressing.
'Arvind Kejriwal has pioneered an alternative politics of work across India. Our goal now is to take this model to every household and make it even stronger,' said Manish Sisodia. (ANI)

PM expresses disappointment over Opposition's absence from debates over crucial Bills

At the customary end of session tea held after the conclusion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (August 21, 2025) noted with disappointment the lack of debates due to disruption, leading to the passage of several Bills amid the Opposition's protests, adding that bright and young MPs of the Congress did not get to participate in discussions due to the 'insecurity' of its leadership. Parliament Monsoon Session: Follow highlights, major updates on August 21, 2025 The customary tea is hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his chambers and was attended by leaders of the NDA allies and in the absence of the Opposition. Sources present at the meeting said Mr. Modi did not name Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House, who is leading his Congress's agitation against the Election Commission's drive to revise electoral rolls in Bihar, but his remarks were apparently aimed at him. He reportedly said the Monsoon session covered several important Bills and regretted that they could not be discussed in Parliament. Mr. Modi singled out the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, which bans all real-money games and was passed by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha without discussion due to din, for praise and its wide positive implications due to the adverse impact on society by these online games. With Opposition leaders skipping the meeting, one of the leaders present at the get-together remarked that it had become increasingly difficult to bring the Congress on board as few of its leaders, who the government interacts with regularly, can influence the party's decision, the Prime Minister responded to this and said the Opposition had some bright young MPs. They may be making the leadership 'insecure', he said, according to the sources. This is not the first time Mr. Modi had expressed these views while criticising the Gandhi family for putting its own interest above anything else. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, speaking later, added that Congress functionaries who attend the meeting with the government over the business in Parliament often come to some understanding but cannot implement it. They might be facing pressure, he said, in an apparent swipe at Mr. Gandhi.

Nitish refuses wear skull cap at madrasa event in Patna

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (August 21, 2025) reportedly refused to wear a skull cap that's typically worn by Muslims at the centenary celebration of the Bihar Madrasa Education Board, where Mr. Kumar was the chief guest. In a video that went viral on social media, Mr. Kumar can be seen holding the cap with both hands and placing it on the head of his Cabinet colleague and Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Zama Khan. 'Nitish's politics takes a new hue – rejecting the cap on stage, but accepting Sanghi coordination behind the scenes. The real face of Chacha's cunning revealed,' the Bihar Youth Congress posted on social media platform X, along with the video. When he was not part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mr. Kumar was known to indirectly critique Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before the latter became PM, that the leaders of India must wear 'topi (cap) and tilak' (symbols of the Muslim and Hindu communities, respectively). Mr. Kumar was previously seen wearing the topi at iftar parties at his official residence, and other functions of the Muslim community. Since he formed the government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leaving the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress in 2022, several Muslims leaders have expressed their disenchantment with Mr. Kumar. When the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) supported the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which is now an Act, several Muslim leaders of the party resigned in protest. RJD MLC Qari Muhammad Shohaib, RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed, and former MLA Mujahid Alam jointly addressed a press conference at the party office, alleging that Mr. Kumar was neither secular before nor would he remain secular because he was 'busy pleasing the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)'. Mr. Kumar listed the developmental work carried out for Muslims and madrasas at the event. Attacking the previous RJD-Congress alliance government in the State, Mr. Kumar said that before 2005, no work had been done for the people of the Muslim community. 'After the formation of the new government, a lot of work has been done for the Muslim community. Earlier, there used to be Hindu-Muslim fights, so fencing of graveyards was started from 2006 itself. Fencing of graveyards has been done on a large scale. Now, there is no fight,' the Bihar CM said. 'Earlier, the condition of madrasas was very bad and madrasa teachers received little money. From 2006, madrasas were registered and given government recognition. Madrasa teachers started receiving salaries equal to government teachers, and equal salaries are being given continuously since then,' Mr. Kumar said.
