Cyber centre launched in city to help, counsel victims of fraud, harassment

1 2 Jaipur: A cyber support centre (CSC) was launched Saturday at the Jaipur Commissionerate to provide counselling and assistance to victims of online fraud and harassment. The initiative is designed to help individuals—particularly women and children—cope with the emotional toll of cybercrimes. The centre, which will be operated by a Mumbai-based NGO, was inaugurated by Director General of Police U R Sahoo and Director General, Cyber Crime, Hemant Priyadarshi. Officials said the facility will offer free psychological, legal, and technical support to those affected by issues such as cyberbullying, trolling, revenge porn, and online scams. It will also focus on raising public awareness through education and training, while addressing mental health challenges linked to internet addiction and online abuse. DGP Sahoo said the centre would help bridge the gap between victims and the resources they need. DG Priyadarshi highlighted the growing threat of cybercrime, especially against children. He said data shows that one in three children using the internet faced online bullying, and nearly 70% of children encounter some form of cyber threat during their digital interactions. Women also remain highly targeted, accounting for about 30% of all reported cases. According to Priyadarshi, data from the National Crime Records Bureau shows a 24.5% increase in financial cybercrimes. In 2024 alone, cyber fraud led to nationwide losses exceeding Rs 2,054 crore. Rajasthan sees around 3,000 cybercrime cases filed each year. Of these, financial fraud makes up 47.25%, UPI scams 30.16%, social media misuse 12%, and cases related to sexual harassment 11%. Despite the growing menace, police were able to recover or block Rs 676 crore out of Rs 1,581 crore lost to cybercrimes over the past three years, he said. The cyber helpline in Jaipur receives 10 to 15 calls daily, with most complaints involving cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and similar forms of harassment, often reported by women. Senior officials of the police commissionerate, including Commissioner Biju George Joseph, attended the inauguration ceremony.
