Container truck intercepted for reckless driving mows down cop on birthday eve at Chakan Phata on Mumbai-Pune highway

Pune: A recklessly driven empty container truck crashed through the barricades and mowed down a police constable when he tried to intercept it at Chakan Phata on the Mumbai-Pune highway late Tuesday identified the deceased constable as Mithun Dhende (43) of Uruli Kanchan. He was attached to the Vadgaon Maval police. His birthday was on Wednesday, May 14. Police inspector Kumar Kadam said, "Dhende was a very active police constable. He lost his life just the day before his birthday. He is survived by his parents, wife, a son and a daughter." The container truck was going from Raipur to Chakan. Inspector Avinash Shilimkar and his team from the crime branch of the Pune Rural police arrested its driver, Rohan Khan (24) of Mewat district in Haryana, and cleaner Umar Mohammed (19) of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, from Mahalunge in Khed taluka. The Vadgaon Maval police registered a case under sections 103 (1) [murder] and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act against the duo. The police said Mumbai resident Omkar (full name not known) and his friend were driving down to Pune on a two-wheeler when they spotted the container truck driven in a zig zag manner at an unusually high speed at Karla Phata along the highway around 9.30pm. "I took some videos of the truck, chased it and told the driver to drive properly, but he ignored and continued in the same vein," Omkar told local TV news channels. "I then alerted the police control room and a police officer on duty at the Vadgaon Chowk," Omkar inspector Kadam said, "The officer at Vadgaon Chowk alerted constable Dhende, who was at the Chakan Chowk, and told him to intercept the truck. Dhende and police warden Kundalik Sutar spotted the container truck approaching them and signalled its driver to stop. The driver halted for a few seconds and then suddenly accelerated the vehicle. Dhende, standing in front of the vehicle, did not expect it. Before he could jump to a safe place, the truck dashed him. Dhende fell and was run over by the truck."The truck driver kept driving ahead towards Chakan though some residents of the area, including Vadgaon Maval's Vikas Jadhav, chased the vehicle on their bikes. The truck slowed down near Station Chowk in Talegaon. "I parked my motorcycle and jumped into the truck driver's cabin, but the driver was not ready to stop. To save myself, I had to jump down from the cabin," Jadhav told TV Kadam said the driver later parked the container truck alongside the road at Mahalunge and ran away with the cleaner. The duo were later arrested. A badly injured Dhende was taken to a hospital at Somatane Phata, where doctors declared him dead.
