Labourers, including children, rescued from sugarcane farm
On Wednesday, the district administration, labour department, and Pune Rural police rescued all the individuals from the farm and sent them to their native place in Sambhajinagar district.
Police have filed a case against the owner of the farm, Sandeep Dubey, who had allegedly held the labourers captive from January 1, 2023 to July 30, 2025.
The workers, who are residents of Brahmagaon village in Paithan taluka, were brought to the farm by a contractor. They were allegedly locked inside the farm and made to work day and night. They were told that they owed money to the owner and, hence, cannot leave until the amount was paid back to him.
The young children were forced to work in the cattle sheds and the house. When the workers requested permission to go home, they were beaten and denied food and water.
The labourers finally managed to contact a child protection group. The group informed government officials and police, who quickly arrived at the farm and rescued all 14 people.
Sandesh Kenjale, police inspector at Shirur Police Station, said, ' We followed all procedures, rescued them, and sent them to their native places. We have filed an FIR against the accused and issued a notice to him to appear for further investigation.'
Police have filed a case against the farm owner under sections 115(2), 126(2), 131, 351(2), 351(3) of the BNS and sections 9,16 and 17 of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976.

The summons for Varadarajan, issued by police inspector Soumarjyoti Ray under section S.35(3), BNSS, referred to an FIR (03/2025) registered at the Crime Branch, Panganj, Guwahati, under sections 152, 196, 197(1)(D)/3(6), 353, 45 and 61. However, the FIR date was not mentioned, no details of the alleged offence were provided and a copy of the FIR was not included – as the police are legally obliged to do while serving a summons under this section of the BNSS. The summons was received at The Wire 's office here on August 14. Today (August 18), an identical summons was received in the name of Thapar, for the same FIR. Claiming that 'it is revealed that there are reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain the facts and circumstances from you, in relation to the present investigation,' both Varadarajan and Thapar have been directed to appear at the Crime Branch office in Panbazaar, Guwahati on Friday, August 22. 'Failure to attend/ comply with the terms of this Notice can render you liable for arrest', the summons adds. While the FIR registered against Varadarajan in Morigaon on July 11, 2025, pertains to a complaint filed by a BJP officeholder over a story published in The Wire on June 28, 2025 (IAF Lost Fighter Jets to Pak Because of Political Leadership's Constraints': Indian Defence Attache), it is not apparent what article or video the Crime Branch FIR relates to. Even in the Morigaon case, as The Wire 's counsel Nitya Ramakrishan informed the Supreme Court, the FIR was kept a secret and it was only through well-placed sources that it became possible to learn of the complaint, the date of the FIR, and the criminal sections invoked. It was on this basis that The Wire approached the court to challenge the vires of Section 152 of BNS and the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice. Section 152 of BNS ('Acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India') is the rebranded version of India's earlier sedition provision (Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, Section) that the apex court stayed in 2022. Varadarajan and Thapar have responded to the summons by drawing attention to the requirement – laid down by the Supreme Court – for FIRs to be made public and copies given to the accused. They have also noted a Karnataka high court judgment which says that a police summons without a copy of the FIR accompanying it is invalid. The Wire 's legal representatives in Guwahati say there is no trace of the FIR in the magistrate's court. Reporters in Assam have also failed to get the police in Guwahati to provide any details about the new case. In their response to the summons, both Varadarajan and Thapar have said they are ready and willing to cooperate with any investigation, but the preconditions laid down by India's constitutional courts have to be fulfilled in any case. Please note, their reply says, that they "cannot be conceivably summoned and expected to answer questions on a matter, to ascertain the 'facts and circumstances in relation to the present investigation', without being supplied with the contents of the FIR to which your investigation pertains." 112 human trafficking victims rescued between July 31 and Aug 14: Police
Patna: Altogether 112 victims of human trafficking — 41 minor girls and 64 boys, besides seven women — were rescued from various districts between July 31 and Aug 14 under 'Operation Naya Savera' of Bihar Police. The police also arrested 50 human traffickers — 28 men and 22 women — and registered 24 FIRs under various laws, including the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Child Labour Act, said Amit Kumar Jain, ADG (weaker sections), on Monday. "The operation, coinciding with the International Day against Human Trafficking on July 30, aimed to rescue the victims of human trafficking, child labour, unethical sex trade and exploitation in orchestra/theatre groups. The operation was conducted across the state with the collaboration of district anti-human trafficking units, NGOs and railway officials. The operation saw significant success in various districts. In child labour cases, 63 victims were rescued — 23 from Patna, 21 from Sitamarhi, four from Vaishali, three from Katihar, one from Bagaha, three from Madhubani, two from Narkatiaganj railway station and six from Sasaram station. Among the rescued were victims from neighbouring regions, including three from Nepal, 13 from West Bengal, four from Uttar Pradesh, and one each from Odisha and Jharkhand. Saran district emerged as the top performer in the operation, followed by Patna. "Since January 2025, the Bihar Police registered 329 FIRs related to human trafficking, rescuing 1,016 victims, including 217 minor girls, 77 women and 722 boys. A total of 250 traffickers were arrested and sent to judicial custody. In addition, the Bihar Police also focused on addressing discrimination and crimes against transgender individuals," the ADG said. Rs 40kcr of investors' money stuck with credit societies, Maharashtra govt to announce SOP for recovery
Mumbai: According to rough estimates, close to Rs 40,000 crore of investors' money is stuck with various credit societies and financial institutions under Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, 1999 (MPID) cases, said officials. Minister of State (MoS) Home and Revenue, Yogesh Kadam, said that a joint SOP will be formed by the Home and Revenue departments. Kadam took a review meeting of departments and asked officials to present data in 15 days. Senior officials said around Rs 40,000 crore of investors' money is pending for recovery in various cases. "I took a review meeting recently and have asked officials from the Home and Revenue departments to present data so that an SOP can be formed. They will give the data on pending cases and their status in 15 days, and then the SOP will be framed," Kadam said. In the monsoon session of the state legislature, CM Devendra Fadnavis said the govt will set up a special mechanism with help from experts to outsource the identification, valuation, and auction of properties of accused in cases of duped investors so that properties can be auctioned and investors get their money back sooner. Fadnavis also said that the govt will amend the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, 1999, to increase the punishment period so that offences can be made non-bailable. Fadnavis was replying to a question raised by MLA Amol Khatal on investors who lost money in fraudulent schemes of the Maitreya Group of companies. "The govt will create a special mechanism, experts will be appointed, and third-party agencies will be taken on board. We will outsource the process for identifying properties of the accused, valuation of these properties, and then sale of these properties so that duped investors can get their money back sooner. This third-party agency will help the police and the prosecution to help investors get their money back since it takes a long time for the police to identify, evaluate, and then sell the property of the accused and give money back to investors," Fadnavis said in his reply.
