AC was switched on, says kin of mechanic who died in blast in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: The family of a 35-year-old technician who died when the compressor of an AC exploded on the roof of a restaurant on Saturday has alleged that someone had switched on the machine while he was at work, causing the explosion. Following a complaint by the family, an FIR has been registered against unknown persons under Section 106 of BNS for causing death by negligence. Pintu Kumar died at the spot while his colleague Puran was critically injured when the AC compressor burst during a gas refill operation at Walk in the Woods restaurant in Vaishali's Sector 4 on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2.10pm. "My brother had been repairing ACs and electrical items for five years. We had begged him to quit after seeing news reports of AC explosions last year, but he assured us nothing would happen to him as he was skilled at his job," said Atish Kumar, Pintu's brother. Kumar, who leaves behind a wife and two children, had received a call from restaurant owner Ved Bansal around noon on Saturday for the repair work. DCP (trans-Hindon) Nimish Patil said a special team had been formed to investigate the cause of death. The region has seen a number of AC-related accidents in the region. Between April 1 and June 5 this year, Noida and Ghaziabad recorded 117 fire incidents due to AC explosions — 85 in Noida and 32 in Ghaziabad. Ankush Kumar, another AC mechanic, said nitrogen left in the system could pose a significant explosion risk. "The severity depends on the quantity of nitrogen present. While we use nitrogen to detect leaks, its complete removal is crucial before refill operation," he added. He said other factors like electrical faults, refrigerant issues, excessive heat build-up, and poor maintenance could cause sudden discharge of pressurised refrigerant and oil, potentially leading to explosions or fires.

UP's Village That Makes Women Blush – The Name Locals Whisper, Not Shout

Sultanpur: People proudly announce the name of their native village. Even if they settle in cities, their roots bring a sense of pride. But in one village in Uttar Pradesh, people, especially women, often hesitate to reveal where they come from. The reason? The name of their village triggers awkward laughter and embarrassment. This is the story of Baalampur, a village in the Bhadainya block of Sultanpur district. The name sounds unusual, even comical, to many. While outsiders might find it funny, the locals have grown used to the reactions – some even feel proud of their village's identity, despite the awkwardness attached to its name. Story Behind the Name Locals say the name has roots in a very old family tale. According to village elders, there were once three brothers – Puran, Balam and Mahesh. The places where they settled eventually became known as Puranpur, Baalampur and Maheshua. Named after brother Balam, Baalampur has held onto its identity ever since. Though the story is innocent, the name often draws chuckles from those hearing it for the first time. Some villagers admit that it used to bother them. Now, they have grown immune. However, it is not the same for everyone. Many women avoid saying the name of the village, especially after marriage, fearing embarrassment. Instead, they say they are from Pratapganj Bazaar, a nearby locality. Pride or Problem? Despite the embarrassment, many villagers do not want the name changed. They believe it is a part of their heritage. 'Our ancestors lived and died here. This name is their memory. Why should we erase it?' asked one elderly resident of the village. Some even wear the name with pride, arguing that the legacy behind the name matters more than how it sounds. Baalampur is located about 17 kilometers from Sultanpur headquarters, near Durgapur Bazaar. It lies within the Bhadainya Block. Though Baalampur is not the only village with an unusual name in India, it stands out for the reactions it evokes and the dignity with which its people carry it. Beyond the jokes and jibes, Baalampur is a typical Indian village – rooted in history, filled with stories and navigating modern identity with tradition. The laughter may not fade soon, but neither will the spirit of Baalampur.

Air conditioner blast at Ghaziabad hotel kills one, injures another

A repair worker was killed and another severely injured on Saturday afternoon after an air conditioner compressor exploded atop a hotel in Ghaziabad's Vaishali neighbourhood, officials said. The blast occurred around 2:10 pm on the roof of the Walk in the Woods Hotel, located in Sector 4 of Vaishali. The deceased, identified as Pintu, 35, who used only one name, was declared dead at the scene. The second worker, Puran, 40, sustained serious burns and is receiving treatment at Chandra Laxmi Hospital, according to a statement issued by the Ghaziabad Police. 'An information was received that two people were repairing AC on the roof of Hotel Walk in Woods when suddenly the AC compressor burst. Pintu died in the blast at the spot, while Puran is undergoing treatment,' the police said in an official statement. Authorities added that no other individuals were injured. 'When we received the information, we sent the local police unit to the spot. It was found that both men were repairing AC on the roof of the hotel. Except for these two, no other men have sustained injuries. We are taking all the required legal action,' a police official said. Saturday's incident marks the second time the establishment has faced a safety-related crisis. On January 25, 2024, a fire broke out in the restaurant's kitchen due to a spark in the chimney system, said Rahul Pal, Chief Fire Officer for Ghaziabad. 'Back then the restaurant had been operating without a Fire NOC,' Pal said, referring to the mandatory No Objection Certificate that certifies compliance with fire safety norms. He noted that the hotel has since obtained the necessary clearance. 'We have not sent them any notice this year regarding any violations and also they have taken the NOC,' he told The Indian Express. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination. Authorities said investigations into the cause of the compressor explosion are ongoing.
