BHOPAL: At least four Kanwariyas were killed after a speeding car ran over a group of devotees walking along the Agra-Mumbai National Highway near Sheetla Mata Mandir Gate in Gwalior around 1am on Tuesday.
Two others sustained critical injuries in the incident.
The accident occurred on the Shivpuri Link Road stretch of the highway when the car's tyre reportedly burst, causing it to veer off course and run over the Kanwariyas before overturning into roadside bushes.
Police said the vehicle was at high speed when its tyre burst. It lost control, hit the Kanwariyas, and toppled off the highway. When the police reached the spot, the vehicle was empty.
Efforts are underway to trace its occupants.
Teams from various police stations, along with local residents, pulled the injured and the deceased from a roadside ditch and took them to the trauma centre at JAH Hospital. Doctors declared three Kanwariyas dead on arrival. A fourth victim succumbed to injuries later.
The victims were identified as Puran, resident of Sidna's Chak, Simaria Ghatigaon; Ramesh, Dinesh – both residents of Simaria Ghatigaon; and Dharmendra, a resident of Ghatigaon.
Three of the deceased belonged to the same family.
They were part of a 13-member group of Kanwariyas from Banjara Ka Pura in Simaria Panchayat. The group had collected water from a waterfall near the Shiv temple in Bhadavna and was walking back to their village, a few kms from the accident site, to perform the Jalabhishek ritual on Wednesday when the incident took place.

Stampede at Ausaneshwar Mahadev Temple leaves two dead, 29 injured

Barabanki, July 28 (UNI) A tragic incident occurred at the Ausaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Barabanki during the third Monday of the holy month of Shrawan, when a stampede broke out in the temple premises, leading to the death of two devotees. A total of 29 other devotees, including women and children were also injured in the mishap. The stampede took place around 2 am during the Jalabhishek ritual. According to initial reports, the chaos was triggered after an electric current spread through the temple premises. Authorities stated that the electric wires snapped and fell onto a tin shed inside the temple complex after some monkeys jumped on them, causing a short circuit. As panic spread among the devotees due to the electric shock and the resulting commotion, a stampede broke out. Upon receiving information about the incident, a large police force was deployed to the site. The injured were immediately rushed to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centres via ambulances. Those critically injured were referred to the district hospital. District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya, along with other senior officials, reached the spot to assess the situation. The DM confirmed the cause of the incident, stating that the broken electric wire had come into contact with the tin shed, leading to the current spread and subsequent chaos. Among the deceased is Prashant (22), a resident of Mubarakpura, who died during treatment at the Trivediganj CHC. Another unidentified devotee also succumbed to injuries. Ten injured persons were brought to the CHC, out of which five in critical condition were referred for advanced treatment. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the stampede ensued after rumors of electric current spread among the crowd, causing devotees to panic and rush for safety. Authorities have since brought the situation under control, and two hours after the incident, the temple resumed normalcy, with devotees continuing to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek in queues. An investigation into the incident is underway, and officials have assured further safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. UNI PRI RKM

Eight dead, several injured in stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple; magisterial probe ordered

DEHRADUN: The death toll in the tragic stampede at Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar has risen to eight, officials confirmed on Saturday. Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of Disaster Management, Uttarakhand, confirmed the update to The New Indian Express. The stampede occurred on the pathway leading to the temple on Sunday morning, initially claiming six lives. According to preliminary reports, the chaos was allegedly triggered by a rumour of an electric current on the route, causing panic among the devotees. Several people were injured in the incident, which has cast a shadow over the religious pilgrimage. Among the deceased is a 12-year-old boy, while a 4-year-old girl is counted among the injured, five of whom are reported to be serious. What began as a routine spiritual journey for hundreds quickly turned into a nightmare. Devotees were making their way to offer prayers or returning after their 'darshan' when a sudden and unfounded rumour about an electric current spreading through the railing area allegedly caused immediate panic. "It was sheer chaos. People started screaming about current, and then everyone just pushed forward," recounted Pankaj Chaurasia, a visibly shaken devotee who managed to escape the crush. "Those who fell on the narrow, crowded stairwell had no chance. People were just trampled underfoot as the crowd surged forward." The sudden stampede transformed the temple path into a scene of utter pandemonium. Victims, once fallen, found it impossible to rise as the surging crowd inadvertently trampled them. Police sources identified the youngest fatality as 12-year-old Aarush from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobhal had confirmed the scale of the tragedy, telling TNIE: "A total of 35 people were injured in the stampede. Some critically injured individuals have been referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment." Despite the conclusion of the Kanwar Mela devotees' holy water offering on 23 July, lakhs of Kanwariyas and members of the general public continue to throng Haridwar. The weekend also contributed to the significant rush in the holy city.

"People Jumped Over Others, Ran Over Children": Haridwar Stampede Witness

The Mansa Devi temple, a popular pilgrimage site in the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, was witness to a deadly stampede this morning. Six people died while dozens were injured. A sudden crowd surge and an apparent rumour over an "electric current" have emerged as potential causes that led to the stampede. An eyewitness broke down on camera while narrating the events before the stampede. "We had gone for darshan. The temple's main gate was closed since there was a huge crowd inside. People ran from that direction, and they jumped over each other. They ran over my head and our children. There were bodies scattered," she said. Another injured devotee, who is from Bihar, said a huge crowd had suddenly gathered at the temple. As people tried to jostle their way out of the crowd, he fell and fractured his hand. "People fell down while trying to run," he recounted. The stampede occurred on the staircases on the temple road leading to the main shrine. Visuals later showed injured devotees being taken to the hospital in ambulances and several others undergoing treatment. Bodies were also seen at the stampede site. The tragedy unfolded during the auspicious Hindu month of Sawan, which witnesses a rush of devotees at all pilgrimage points in the city. Haridwar is also a major destination for Shiv devotee Kanwariyas who visit the city to collect water from the Ganga during this time. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is in touch with the local authorities and closely monitoring the situation. His government has also announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
