10 'old-lady' baby names making a comeback and 20 that are facing extinction

While many parents-to-be are selecting more modern names, some are turning the clock back to find ones they like. Picking the perfect name for a new baby is one of the hardest decisions a parent has to make. It is a moniker that will stick with the child for life, so it has to suit them. ‌ Some names seem cute and adorable for a wee tot, but will it still seem right when they are older? And other titles just don't fit properly for a youngster. ‌ It's a seemingly endless struggle, so mums and dads-to-be often look around for inspiration. And while many are choosing more unique, modern names, some are going in the other direction. ‌ In fact, some are turning the clock back a full century and using baby names from 100 years ago to help them find the right title for their little bundle of joy. QR Code Generator examined data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on the top 100 baby girl names in 1924 and compared it with the ONS data for 2023 to see which vintage names were making a comeback. There are a number of 'old lady' names that still have huge popularity in the UK a century on, showing that, sometimes, looking back is the best way to look forward. However, there are also a number of classic titles that look set for extinction due to their dwindling popularity. ‌ The most favoured vintage baby name for girls is Lily, with 2,290 baby girls in the UK named Lily in 2023 - more than any other on the list. Continuing the nature theme, Ivy was the second most popular, with 1,997 girls named Ivy in 2023. In third place, trends deviated from the floral and nature theme, with 1,899 girls being named Florence, reports the Express. ‌ Names like Evelyn, Elsie, and Emily were also in the top 10, showing they too have stood the test of time, alongside Grace and Ada. Daisy was also in there, another floral title, and rounding off the list was Ruby; perfect for parents who love gem-inspired names. At the other end of the scale, there are some vintage girls' names that are coming close to disappearing, with several having completely vanished in 2023. ‌ Phyllis, Pauline and Gertrude have become extinct in the UK, with no babies receiving any of these three names in the ONS statistics. And there are some others that were only chosen a handful of times. Doreen, Muriel and Brenda are the second rarest century-old baby girl names in the UK today, with only three baby girls each given these names in 2023. Marjorie, Maureen, and Marion were only picked a few times, as were Sheila, Thelma, Hilda, and Edna. ‌ Celebrity power also hasn't helped a couple of titles. Despite Gwendoline Christie becoming one of the most recognisable British actors of the last 15 years thanks to her roles in Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Wednesday - and, of course, her towering height - her name was only used 10 times in 2023. And Pamela Anderson has been making a bit of a comeback in recent years. The Baywatch icon has been praised for being an advocate for aging gracefully, rather than turning to regular cosmetic surgery. But Pamela was picked as a name just nine times in 2023. ‌ So, despite the vintage appeal working for some names, it hasn't helped others which are coming close to extinction in the UK. Read on below for the full lists. Experts at QR Code Generator compiled the list by looking at the highest-rated beaches on Tripadvisor. Beaches that received four stars or higher were ranked based on the percentage of five-star reviews compared to the total number of reviews. And it found that four out of the top five beaches were all found in Scotland - sealing all of the top three spots. Some of which are so stunning that they are exotic dupes of Caribbean resorts. And experts say that they could actually be even better because they're lesser-known hidden gems, which are not as overrun with tourists as some hotspot areas are. Scottish beaches can often be overlooked for southern destinations, but these reviews show how extraordinary these locations really are Marc Porcar Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, said: "Scotland dominates the list of best UK beaches, claiming four out of the top five spots. "Scottish beaches can often be overlooked for southern destinations, but these reviews show how extraordinary these locations really are. 'These beaches are more remote than usual seaside towns that are overrun during the summer months. "They offer visitors a quieter, more picturesque experience that is truly breathtaking.' Scotland's number one secret beach revealed Luskentyre Beach Located on the Isle of Harris, Luskentyre Beach came in at number one in the rankings. And it is no surprise, as it features miles of white sand and beautiful green-blue water, with impressive sand dunes and views of the island of Taransay. Further adding to Luskentyre's appeal – for such a beautiful beach visitors might expect to have to share the beauty spot with crowds of other travellers but on the contrary. So it's often possible to take a stroll along this beach without seeing another soul, making it the ideal secluded retreat. The study found that 93.79 per cent of reviews (1,072 out of 1,143) rated it five stars. And it was named one of the UK's best beaches in the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. Scarista Beach Another beach on the Isle of Harris that made the list is Scarista Beach. Coming in at second place, experts found that 90.50 per cent of reviews (200 out of 221) rated it five stars. Less than six miles from Luskentyre Beach, it is popular among visitors for its rows of dunes that are left behind by large waves nearly every day. And it's because of these massive waves and high gusts of wind that it's been named as one of the best surfing beaches in Scotland. The white sandy beach is speckled with seashells and since it lies on the southwestern coast, it has picturesque views over the Atlantic Ocean. 5 Camusdarach Beach is an arc of white, glistening sand and clear water Credit: Alamy Camusdarach Beach Camusdarach Beach was the third Scottish beach on the list and also rounded out the top three spots. Advertisement Sun safety 'A lot of people get confused by the numbers, such as SPF 30 or SPF 50," said Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator. "The SPF rating refers to how much longer you can stay in the sun without burning compared to unprotected skin. "SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%, but only when applied correctly and generously." He explained that 'even high-SPF sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours, and after swimming or sweating".
