10 'old-lady' baby names making a comeback and 20 that are facing extinction
Picking the perfect name for a new baby is one of the hardest decisions a parent has to make. It is a moniker that will stick with the child for life, so it has to suit them.
Some names seem cute and adorable for a wee tot, but will it still seem right when they are older? And other titles just don't fit properly for a youngster.
It's a seemingly endless struggle, so mums and dads-to-be often look around for inspiration. And while many are choosing more unique, modern names, some are going in the other direction.
In fact, some are turning the clock back a full century and using baby names from 100 years ago to help them find the right title for their little bundle of joy.
QR Code Generator examined data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on the top 100 baby girl names in 1924 and compared it with the ONS data for 2023 to see which vintage names were making a comeback.
There are a number of 'old lady' names that still have huge popularity in the UK a century on, showing that, sometimes, looking back is the best way to look forward. However, there are also a number of classic titles that look set for extinction due to their dwindling popularity.
The most favoured vintage baby name for girls is Lily, with 2,290 baby girls in the UK named Lily in 2023 - more than any other on the list.
Continuing the nature theme, Ivy was the second most popular, with 1,997 girls named Ivy in 2023. In third place, trends deviated from the floral and nature theme, with 1,899 girls being named Florence, reports the Express.
Names like Evelyn, Elsie, and Emily were also in the top 10, showing they too have stood the test of time, alongside Grace and Ada. Daisy was also in there, another floral title, and rounding off the list was Ruby; perfect for parents who love gem-inspired names.
At the other end of the scale, there are some vintage girls' names that are coming close to disappearing, with several having completely vanished in 2023.
Phyllis, Pauline and Gertrude have become extinct in the UK, with no babies receiving any of these three names in the ONS statistics.
And there are some others that were only chosen a handful of times. Doreen, Muriel and Brenda are the second rarest century-old baby girl names in the UK today, with only three baby girls each given these names in 2023.
Marjorie, Maureen, and Marion were only picked a few times, as were Sheila, Thelma, Hilda, and Edna.
Celebrity power also hasn't helped a couple of titles. Despite Gwendoline Christie becoming one of the most recognisable British actors of the last 15 years thanks to her roles in Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Wednesday - and, of course, her towering height - her name was only used 10 times in 2023.
And Pamela Anderson has been making a bit of a comeback in recent years. The Baywatch icon has been praised for being an advocate for aging gracefully, rather than turning to regular cosmetic surgery. But Pamela was picked as a name just nine times in 2023.
So, despite the vintage appeal working for some names, it hasn't helped others which are coming close to extinction in the UK. Read on below for the full lists.

Devastation as EastEnders fan-favourite reconsiders return
Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) has been left devastated in EastEnders, after learning daughter Lily (Lillia Turner) has postponed her return to Walford. Lily made a temporary departure in May, after realising that she needed time away from her mum in the wake of her step-father Martin Fowler's (James Bye) death. Martin tragically passed away in February, falling victim to the horrific explosion that tore through The Queen Vic pub. There seemed to be a glimmer of hope as he made his exit towards the barrel store with Stacey, but a beam fell from the ceiling and crushed him. As he lay dying, he confessed his love for Stace – telling her that his reunion with Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) was a mistake. In the aftermath, she struggled immensely with her grief, neglecting to care for Lily and her younger siblings Arthur and Hope. Lily even turned to drink and drugs to ease her own pain. A vicious argument between mother and daughter ensued, and Lily declared that she was packing her bags and going to stay with birth father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott). In tonight's episode, Stacey was thrilled to hear that her eldest was coming home. Amid the buzz and excitement, she noticed that a number of market traders were staring in her direction and gossiping. But what about? To her horror, it became apparent that someone had leaked all of her SecretCam content – the BBC soap's dupe version of OnlyFans – online, for all to see. And given we saw troubled Joel Marshall (Max Murray) accessing her profile last week, it's probably who we'd put our money on being responsible! In fact, following their earlier run-in, Stace' reckoned it was him too. She charged into the caff and outright accused him, with dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) leaping to his defence. Joel swore that he wasn't responsible, and back at home, willingly handed over his laptop to prove that he didn't leak the adult material. More Trending He also told Ross and Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) to check his deleted files, as they wouldn't find anything that would incriminate him. Despite that, Stacey remained convinced – especially when she realised that the wording in the online posts matched what he'd said to her in person during a verbal attack. To make matters worse for poor Stace', she then discovered that Lily wasn't returning home as she was too embarrassed by the revenge porn situation. Eagle-eyed fans have now spotted a clue that the pair could be more than friends. Emily appeared on this year's show, while Ciaran became famous in the villa last year. Now fans have taken to Reddit to discuss a possible budding romance between the pair. It came after they both posted a similar photo from the same bar in Cardiff. Discussing this possible new Love Island relationship, one fan wrote: "Definitely not a coincidence!" This one said: "I feel like this is a perfect pairing." A third said: "These two photos are such a giveaway!" While another added: "We know Ciaran loves his Welsh girls." Emily, who hails from Aberdare in Wales was dumped from the villa after Tommy Bradley brought back blonde bombshell Lucy from Casa Amor. Love Island viewers stunned as Ciaran makes huge statement about his romance with Nicole While, Ciaran, who is also from Wales, was coupled up with Nicole Samuel in last year's series, with the pair parting ways a few months after the final. The Sun previously revealed that there was a spark between the pair, after they connected when Emily was brutally dumped from the villa. A source exclusively told us at the time: "Ciaran initially approached Emily when she left the show just to congratulate her and stuff on how she was and handled herself on the show towards the end, which got them to talking. "Both have been getting to know each other on a more romantic level and they're looking to see how things go." 5 Ciaran was a runner up on the hit show last summer alongside Nicole Samuel Credit: Rex The source added how at the moment since coming out of the villa, Emily is "taking every opportunity she can" especially with brand deals. They noted that Ciaran "is absolutely fine" with her focusing on getting brand deals and making a name for herself "because that's what everyone does when they get out". The source continued: "Emily has no intention of moving back to Australia as of yet as she's focused on her work and recent brand deals here in the UK. "But maybe who's to say that something romantically might also sway her decision to stay in the UK. "Apparently she has something big on the horizon with some brand."

EastEnders confirms return story for popular character but sadness soon follows
EastEnders' Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) is poised to return to Walford this week after an extended break – but she's set to arrive home amid further unhappiness for her mum Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). Lily was last seen leaving Albert Square to spend time with her biological father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott) back in May. Her exit had followed a particularly fraught period in her relationship with Stacey, who'd struggled to step up as a parent amid her grief for her beloved Martin Fowler (James Bye) following his death in the Queen Vic explosion earlier this year. While Stacey has since managed to get her life back on track, fresh drama kicks off just as she is preparing to welcome Lily home. Forthcoming scenes see Stacey's excitement at her daughter's homecoming short-lived when Jean and Freddie Slater (Gillian Wright and Bobby Brazier) reveal that someone leaked her SecretCam pictures and videos online. Fans of the BBC soap will remember that Stacey started making adult content on a subscription platform when she was struggling to make ends meet back in 2023, which also led to her gaining a stalker in the form of creepy teacher Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis). Horrified that the images have now been leaked, Stacey quickly concludes that Joel Marshall (Max Murray) is responsible following his recent behaviour. Last week saw the teenage incel start plotting revenge against Stacey for slapping him after he unleashed a vile rant about her past and Lily's teenage pregnancy.
