Gangster's brother who led attack that killed cop arrested
Ghaziabad: Four days after a shootout with aides of a gangster led to the death of a Noida police constable, the prime accused, Aadil, was arrested after a gunfight near Wave City. The 22-year-old is the brother of the gangster Qadir. He is believed to have led the attempt to ambush the cops on Sunday night when the seven-member team from Noida went to pick up Qadir, wanted in connection with more than two dozen cases of vehicle theft. Constable Saurabh Kumar Deshwal was shot in the head as the gangster's accomplices tried to prevent the cops from taking him away. They pelted the police car with stones and fired at the cops to free Qadir. Sonit Kumar, another constable, was injured by a stone aimed at his head. DCP (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said a team tracked Aadil's movement towards Dasna Ikla Road and asked the Wave City SHO to set up a checkpoint. "The suspect, on a bike, was signalled to stop. As he reversed his bike to escape, he slipped on the road and fell. Seeing the police team approach, he fired at them with the intent to kill. He was shot in the leg during retaliatory firing," the DCP said. Cops recovered an illegal firearm, one live and two used cartridges, and the bike from the accused. Earlier, an FIR was registered at Masuri police station against Qadir – against whom there's already a Gangsters Act case – his brother Aadil, and unknown persons under relevant BNS sections. Aadil is the 15th person to the arrested in the case. Security was heightened in Nahal since Sunday night, with a PAC battalion and several police personnel maintaining vigil.

‘Over 400 families have left': Villagers fear police crackdown after cop shot dead during raid in Ghaziabad
An eerie silence enveloped the lanes of the Nahal village in Ghaziabad on a dusty Thursday afternoon. With iron padlocks hanging outside the main doors and windows sealed, dozens of houses wore a deserted look. Only two medical shops were open in one of the lanes where the attendants spoke in hushed tones, often glancing at the road where the patrolling police teams took rounds. Located about 14 kilometres from the Delhi-Ghaziabad Highway, the village is not too far from the Masoori Lake, a popular spot in the area. The village on Sunday night witnessed the killing of Constable Saurabh Kumar, 26, when a police party from Noida's Phase 3 police station came under fire during a raid to arrest Qadir, a 22-year-old wanted history sheeter. While Qadir was arrested, police said his aides had shot at the team. Following Kumar's death, Ghaziabad Police registered an FIR against Qadir, his brother, and several other people for rioting, assaulting a public servant, and on charges of murder. Since Sunday, at least 14 persons have been apprehended and 42 have been taken into preventive custody over the firing incident. On Monday, five people were arrested, including Nanhu and Abdul Salam, who were shot in the legs during the encounter. Another accused, Abdul Rehman, was arrested on Tuesday. Wanted in a murder case, Rehman too was shot in the leg during an encounter. 'About 400 families have left their houses. They are arresting anyone they want to. So many people have gone to their relatives' houses,' alleged a medical shop owner. 'There are around 10,000 people living in Nahal,' said Gram Pradhan Tasavvar Ali. 'Of them, 95% are Muslims and rest belong to the scheduled caste. I don't know what to do, I spoke to the District Magistrate about it, I am trying to figure out a way out,' he said. 'People are scared. They are leaving, we do not know who can be arrested,' he added. Babu Khan, 65, said around 35 policemen broke into his house while they were sleeping. The glass of the windows was broken, and their iron gate was damaged. 'I was sleeping on the terrace when both my daughter-in-laws came running to me last night,' said Khan, who is paralysed in his left leg. 'I was walking down from the stairs slowly when I saw them. I asked them what had happened. They told me that we are respecting my old age and pushed me aside and asked me to keep quiet,' said Khan. 'We want the real accused to be arrested, but they should not do this to innocent people,' he added. Among those allegedly arrested by police is 28-year-old Mohammad Zubair, a Noida-based interior designer on Tuesday. 'I heard footsteps on our terrace. The police had come from the terrace to our house, and then they entered my bedroom. My husband was sleeping next to me. They woke him up and asked him to put back his clothes and took him along,' his wife alleged. Constable's murder: Nahal residents terrified after police raids
Ghaziabad A week after a Noida police constable was shot dead during a raid in Ghaziabad's Nahal village, the arrest tally has risen to 14. But according to residents, at least 50 to 60 more men have been picked up or detained in sweeping midnight raids that have left the village nearly deserted and families on edge. Around 70% of the village residents vacated by Tuesday, but the situation of those staying behind remained tense, locals said, adding that the village has heavy police presence and their property has been damaged by police in late-night raids. Forty-five-year-old Nazreen, standing beside a half-broken portion of her house's main door, blamed police for the damage, alleging a group of policemen forcefully entered her residence and conducted a raid late Monday. 'It was the second night after the murder. Dozens of policemen barged in well past midnight, broke the door, and stormed the house looking for my sons,' she said. 'They live and work at a mill. They've been there for 10 days. I kept telling the police, but they searched the whole house.' Locals claimed that at least 50—mostly men aged between 20 and 35—men were picked up on suspicionbut have yet to return or be officially acknowledged as arrested. 'Overall, we called about 50-60 persons for questioning. Thirteen were formally arrested, while Qadir was already arrested. Others were allowed to go. We are carefully investigating the case based on evidence,' said Surendra Nath Tiwary, deputy commissioner of Ghaziabad police (rural). Noida police constable Saurabh Kumar was shot dead on Sunday night by unidentified people in a mob, when a group of seven officers were visiting the village to arrest one Qadir, an accused in a case of a music system and ECM theft from a car on the intervening night of May 2 and 3 in Noida. The Noida police registered an FIR for theft on May 21 against unidentified persons at the Phase 3 police station and conducted a raid around 11pm on May 25. Nazreen said that the policemen, besides breaking the main door of the house, damaged a big mirror, a washing machine, and a desert cooler. 'They stayed in my house for about half-an-hour and kept questioning my family. I told them that they should look for the actual person who shot the constable, and spare innocent people. Ever since, I have been using a charpoi to cover the main door to keep my house shut,' she said. Forty-year-old Munni, who stays near Nazreen's house, said a group of over 30 policemen raided her house in the night as well. 'They were banging on the door, and when we did not open, they broke it open. They detained my husband, Nazar Mohammad and my brother-in-law's son, Sultan. They were asking if there were more men in the house. They also broke water taps with their lathis.' 'For the past three days, we cooked nothing. The whereabouts of my husband and my nephew are still unknown. We heard that they were kept in Modinagar's Niwari. My husband is a daily wage worker. Now, I am left with only my minor daughter and my mother-in-law in the house,' Munni said. She said her three sons were spared as they worked outstation, at Rishikesh and Dadri. Police, however, denied the allegations. DCP Tiwary said: 'Claims that police resorted to damage to the houses are baseless and such allegations are false. No such thing happened.' The village is located about three kilometres from National Highway 9, alongside the Upper Ganga Canal, and falls under the jurisdiction of the Masuri police station. Discrepancies in police versions The raid by Noida police in Ghaziabad and the subsequent death of the constable have exposed a lack of coordination between the Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad police. The versions provided by the police also point to differing sequences of events that took place during the raid. The FIR lodged by Noida police at Masuri police station in Ghaziabad on Monday was registered under multiple stringent sections of the BNS, including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, assault on a public servant, and criminal conspiracy, along with provisions of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act. It named Qadir, his brother, and unidentified others as accused. The Noida police also said in the FIR that they were twice attacked and fired upon indiscriminately by the mob in Nahal. However, Ghaziabad police said there was no evidence to prove the same. Maintaining that the Noida police failed to inform them in advance about the raid, Ghaziabad police said the investigation so far did not show there was indiscriminate firing. They maintained that only one bullet casing was found at the scene of the incident. 'All the 14 suspects were booked as they were part of the mob, as indicated in the CCTV videos. As of now, we have sent them to jail under the sections mentioned in the murder FIR lodged by the Noida police. The role of each suspect will be identified during the investigation, and the final sections imposed on each of them will be ascertained in the charge sheet,' DCP Tiwary said.

In Ghaziabad village where cop shot dead, many families leave, scared by ‘carpet searches'
Ghaziabad : Since Sunday night's shootout with aides of a gangster that led to the death of a 27-year-old Noida police constable, many families have left Nahal village amid round-the-clock police surveillance, questioning of locals and 'carpet searches' to find those who had attacked the police team. Police have so far made 14 arrests, but prime suspect Aadil remains elusive. That night when Saurabh Kumar Deshwal was shot in the head, police were successful in arresting Qadir, the gangster who they had gone to pick up after a tipoff from an informer. Aadil is Qadir's brother and is believed to have led the attempt to ambush the cops when they were on their way out of the village with Qadir. Nahal's streets have been deserted for three days, but now, so are many of its houses, with locks hanging on them as fear of arrest haunts the village around 3km off NH-9. Nahal has a population of 40,000. Village Pradhan Tasawwar Ali told TOI on Wednesday, "About 70% of the people living here have left. They need to go out every day to earn and feed their families, but an atmosphere of fear now prevails here. So they have left and are staying with their friends or relatives. They have left their livestock behind. We don't know how to take care of them." Two days ago, 35 people were taken. Today, 15 people were rounded up. These are all innocent people. They have no information," said Ali. A resident of the village who left recently told TOI many feared being arrested. "My family has been living in this village for more than 50 years now. We are a family of 14 and have never seen anything like this in our lives," the 30-year-old said. "I have come to a relative's place with my whole family. It became difficult to even sleep at home with continuous sirens of police vehicles scaring people. We will only go back once the situation is normal. " Ali said village representatives had told the police to "punish the guilty but leave the innocent alone". "Many families have young children, pregnant women and elderly. We are ready to support the police as responsible citizens to catch the criminals and get them punished. But not at the cost of the innocent," he said. "It's also not easy to be living here for those who haven't left because one can barely go out. Besides, shops are closed. I want police to pick up the real culprits at the earliest so the rest of the village can live peacefully again," another local resident said. People are only being brought in for questioning and then let go. We have identified a few more people from the footage, but we are yet to get a clear and complete footage from the night. We are also working on that," he said. Tewari said PAC and police personnel from 5-6 stations were deployed at the village to maintain law and order. "Such incidents tend to spark fear among people, so some families have left the village," the DCP said, adding that senior cops met the village's pradhan and assured them that no unnecessary arrests would be made.

Ghaziabad: 14 held, no clue who shot constable from close range
Constable Saurabh Kumar, who was shot dead during a police raid in Ghaziabad's Nahal village on Sunday night, sustained a single gunshot wound to the head from what appeared to be close range, according to the Ghaziabad police. Fourteen people have been arrested so far in connection with the case, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwary said the autopsy confirmed a single entry-and-exit bullet wound, with the bullet not recovered. 'The autopsy revealed that constable Saurabh Kumar was shot from a firearm, from what appears to be close range… A single casing was found at the spot. The distance of the shot is yet to be determined and will be part of the forensic analysis. The casing has been sent to Agra for examination,' he said. Kumar was part of a seven-member Noida police team that had gone to Nahal village around 11pm to arrest one Qadir in a theft case registered in Noida earlier this month. According to the FIR lodged by Noida police, the team was attacked twice by a mob, which opened 'indiscriminate fire' on them during the raid. Kumar sustained a gunshot wound during the attack and was later declared dead at a local hospital after rushed by his team. Ghaziabad Police have yet to determine who fired the fatal shot. 'There were no indications of multiple shots being fired, as only a single casing was recovered from the scene. Of the total 14 persons arrested in the case till Tuesday night, we have not yet come across evidence to establish that they fired the shot. Those arrested were seen in CCTV footage as part of mob which pelted stones at the police team,' DCP Tiwary added. The police said that five arrests were made till Monday night and nine persons were arrested on Tuesday. The men arrested on Tuesday were identified as Mohammad Javed, Mursaleen, Mohammad Inam, Mehtab, Mehraj Jamshed, Javed Abbas, Haseen Ahmad, another Mursaleen, and Abdul Rehman. Tiwary added that the available CCTV footage has not helped establish the exact sequence of events. 'We have different CCTV footage. But they have hardly helped us establish the sequence of events on late Sunday night. During interrogation, none of the 14 arrested suspects have admitted to firing the shot. More suspects are being questioned,' the DCP added. Qadir, the man named in the original theft case, was arrested during the raid by Noida police team and handed over to Ghaziabad police.
