In Ghaziabad village where cop shot dead, many families leave, scared by ‘carpet searches'

Ghaziabad
: Since Sunday night's shootout with aides of a gangster that led to the death of a 27-year-old Noida police constable, many families have left Nahal village amid round-the-clock police surveillance, questioning of locals and 'carpet searches' to find those who had attacked the police team.
Police have so far made 14 arrests, but prime suspect Aadil remains elusive. That night when Saurabh Kumar Deshwal was shot in the head, police were successful in arresting Qadir, the gangster who they had gone to pick up after a tipoff from an informer. Aadil is Qadir's brother and is believed to have led the attempt to ambush the cops when they were on their way out of the village with Qadir.
Nahal's streets have been deserted for three days, but now, so are many of its houses, with locks hanging on them as fear of arrest haunts the village around 3km off NH-9.
Nahal has a population of 40,000. Village Pradhan Tasawwar Ali told TOI on Wednesday, "About 70% of the people living here have left. They need to go out every day to earn and feed their families, but an atmosphere of fear now prevails here. So they have left and are staying with their friends or relatives.
They have left their livestock behind. We don't know how to take care of them."
The Pradhan said sudden summons by police for questioning had scared locals.

"We met the police commissioner on Wednesday and requested that innocent people should not be disturbed through night searches or by suddenly being taken into custody. Two days ago, 35 people were taken. Today, 15 people were rounded up. These are all innocent people. They have no information," said Ali.
A resident of the village who left recently told TOI many feared being arrested. "My family has been living in this village for more than 50 years now.
We are a family of 14 and have never seen anything like this in our lives," the 30-year-old said. "I have come to a relative's place with my whole family. It became difficult to even sleep at home with continuous sirens of police vehicles scaring people. We will only go back once the situation is normal.
"
Ali said village representatives had told the police to "punish the guilty but leave the innocent alone". "Many families have young children, pregnant women and elderly.
We are ready to support the police as responsible citizens to catch the criminals and get them punished. But not at the cost of the innocent," he said.
"It's also not easy to be living here for those who haven't left because one can barely go out. Besides, shops are closed. I want police to pick up the real culprits at the earliest so the rest of the village can live peacefully again," another local resident said.
DCP (Rural) Surendra Nath Tewari told TOI that 14 people have been arrested after they were identified from CCTV footage.
"No one has been detained. People are only being brought in for questioning and then let go. We have identified a few more people from the footage, but we are yet to get a clear and complete footage from the night. We are also working on that," he said.
Tewari said PAC and police personnel from 5-6 stations were deployed at the village to maintain law and order.
"Such incidents tend to spark fear among people, so some families have left the village," the DCP said, adding that senior cops met the village's pradhan and assured them that no unnecessary arrests would be made.

Salesman slapped by excise inspector for charging 10 extra for a beer bottle

Noida: A liquor salesman in Greater Noida was allegedly slapped and pelted with a belt by an excise inspector for overcharging customers. The district excise officer has initiated a departmental inquiry. Manish Kumar (29) of Dadri, who works as a salesperson at a model shop in Jagat Farm, claimed he sustained severe injuries on his limbs and chest after he was brutally assaulted by excise inspector Chandra Shekhar. His family staged a protest outside the DM's office on Saturday after cops refused to register a complaint. The victim claimed Shekhar and a constable came to the model shop around 8.30 pm on Friday and accused him of overcharging customers. "When I told the officer that I did not overcharge, the inspector slapped me multiple times. He removed the CCTV camera's DVR and then put me into his vehicle and took me to the excise office in Greater Noida's Sector Delta 3. Once in the office, he assaulted me with a belt and left me there in a severely bruised state," Manish claimed. The salesman claimed he was left in the excise office for hours before his brother, Rohit, who also works at the model shop, got to know about the assault later that night and came to pick him up around midnight. The family subsequently tried to submit a formal complaint on the emergency helpline, Dial 112, and then at several police posts, but in vain. On Saturday, they gathered outside DM's office in Greater Noida. The district excise officer, Subodh Kumar, told TOI their team had received a complaint against the salesman for charging customers Rs 10 more than MRP for beer bottles on Friday. "Excise inspector Chandra Shekhar and a constable were sent to the shop for an inspection. In his initial statement, the inspector said that when he reached the shop, the salesperson was drunk and misbehaved with them. The two officials took the salesperson to their car to impose a challan, but the latter fled from the spot," the DEO said, adding that it was possible that Manish may have hurt himself later. "A departmental inquiry has been initiated. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry," the DEO said.

'He is a Sinwar too': Israel military claims Hamas chief killed in May 13 strike

Smoke rises in the sky following an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. (AP) An Israeli airstrike killed senior Hamas figure Muhammad Sinwar earlier this month while he was in a tunnel under a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel reported, citing Israeli defense officials' statement on Saturday. The confirmation came three days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a similar statement. In a joint announcement, the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security agency said the May 13 strike on the grounds of the European Hospital in Khan Younis killed Sinwar, along with Muhammad Shabana, commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, and Mahdi Quara, commander of the South Khan Younis Battalion. "The terrorists were eliminated while operating in an underground command and control center under the European Hospital in Khan Younis, deliberately endangering the civilian population in and around the hospital," the joint statement said, as cited by The Times of Israel. Earlier in May, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Hamas and Arab officials, that the meeting between Hamas leaders was held to talk about their position on ceasefire negotiations and a hostage deal, among other topics. After learning of the gathering, the Israeli Air Force began preparing for a strike, The Times of Israel's report said. Senior officers believed it might be canceled over concerns that hostages could be nearby, as Sinwar was known to keep them close. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users Don't Forget To Do This Before Saturday Read More Undo But once intelligence showed that no hostages were near the commanders, the Israeli air force was given approval to carry out the attack. Jets were launched, and the strike was executed. Who was Muhammad Sinwar? Muhammad Sinwar, a senior military figure in Hamas, was the younger brother of former Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. He had been on Israel's most wanted list for several months. Israeli officials said Sinwar had resisted efforts to negotiate a hostage deal and had blocked progress toward a ceasefire. After the death of Muhammad Deif, Hamas's top military commander, in July 2024, Sinwar took over the group's military operations. Yahya Sinwar had been made the overall Hamas leader after Israel killed Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in the same month. When Yahya Sinwar was killed in combat in October 2024, Muhammad Sinwar became the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Karnataka state consumer forum may rope in police in exceptional recovery cases

Bengaluru: In a move aimed at strengthening the enforcement of consumer rights, Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (KSCDRC) plans to seek the police department's assistance in exceptional recovery cases — particularly where parties fail to comply with refund or compensation orders issued by the forum. "While around 90% of respondents voluntarily comply with our orders, it's the remaining 10% that pose a challenge. These are often high-value or wilful defiance cases — especially involving real estate firms — that ignore legally binding directives. In such instances, we are planning to approach the police department to aid in enforcement," said KSCDRC chairman Shivashankare Gowda TG. Unlike civil courts, consumer forums lack a dedicated bailiff system to ensure compliance. This leaves them heavily reliant on the willingness of parties to obey orders, or else the way is to pursue contempt proceedings in civil courts — a process that is often lengthy and difficult for common citizens to navigate. To address this gap, the commission is now exploring a formal coordination framework with police to help execute non-compliance orders, especially in cases where properties have been attached or arrest warrants are issued by the forum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Gowda noted that such police assistance would be sought sparingly and only in exceptional or chronic default situations. "We are not trying to criminalise civil disputes but ensure the authority of the consumer forum is not undermined," he added. —————- Box - 1 Going digital In a parallel push, KSCDRC is embracing digital tools to increase case-disposal rates and enhance transparency. The commission plans to launch a Telegram channel for real-time notifications of sittings and holidays, and a YouTube channel to live-stream consumer court proceedings. "More and more people are getting cheated and losing money. But looking at the filing, it still remains low. We want people to come ahead and file complaints for better justice delivery. This (use of digital tools) move will also bring unprecedented transparency. Even a complainant can watch the proceedings from home," the chairman said. The total cost to develop the infrastructure is estimated at Rs 52 crore. —————- Box - 2 Pendency & pressure Gowda acknowledged that pendency of cases remains a concern in some districts, though several forums have very few cases. While Gadag and Bengaluru have heavy workloads, many other districts have low pendency — some even under 30 cases. He pointed out that case-disposal efficiency is being prioritised. The chairman admitted there was a decline in the disposal rate over the past year. "There was a 40% dip in disposal, but the aim is to solve that problem first," he added. As of April 2025, Karnataka's consumer disputes redressal system had approximately 11,000 cases on record, with about 7,000 pending, including those in the state commission and Bengaluru Rural forums. Real estate and insurance disputes constitute the majority of these cases.
