BJP Kerala secy meets Chhattisgarh CM Sai, dy CM Sharma over nuns' arrest
2
Raipur: Four days after arrest of two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and attempted religious conversion of three tribal girls, Kerala BJP general secretary Anoop Antony Joseph on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with CM Vishnu Deo Sai and deputy CM, who is also the home minister, Vijay Sharma, on the issue.
He also met the nuns, who are now in judicial custody.
Both the arrested nuns hail from Kerala.
Nuns Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, along with Sukaman Mandavi – the person who got the girls to Durg railway station -- were arrested from the station on July 25 on a complaint filed by a local Bajrang Dal worker who accused them of trafficking the girls to another state and indulging in forced religious conversion.
Later, a delegation including Congress MPs Benny Behanan from Chalakudy and K Francis George from Kottayam, RSP MP NK Premachandran from Kollam and Kerala legislative assembly member Roshi M John met the CM and deputy CM.
Congress MP from Koraput constituency in Odisha, Saptagiri Ulaka, was also a part of the delegation.
After meeting the delegation, Sai said Chhattisgarh is a peace-loving state that believes in harmony and coexistence. "People of all religions live here with mutual respect and brotherhood," he said.
Reassuring the delegation, CM stated that the matter is being investigated as per due judicial process. "Law is taking its course, there is no interference," he added, underlining the "safety and dignity of the state's daughters and citizens."

Talking to media persons, deputy CM Vijay Sharma said that based on statements recorded by GRP, an FIR was lodged in the case, that happened in Narayanpur district.
"I met Anoop Antony Joseph and he briefed me with the information that he had. Everything is being done legally, and the case is in court. There have been instances in the past where women from Narayanpur have been trafficked in a similar manner. The matter is under investigation," Sharma said.
There was drama at the jail as the Congress MPs were asked to wait and were allowed to meet the nuns only after Joesph, along with state BJP leaders, met them.
They were asked to wait by the jail authorities for almost one and half hours to meet the nuns. The meeting took place only after the intervention of Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.
Talking to reporters outside the jail premises, Premchandran claimed that the nuns were innocent, and it was a deliberate attack on them.
"We were allotted time to meet the nuns at 12.30pm, but we were asked to wait, and the meeting took place only after the BJP delegation met them. We staged a demonstration outside the jail," Premchandran said.
He said that he couldn't disclose the details of the meeting with nuns. The three young girls were being taken for jobs and the nuns had come to receive them at the railway station. Then some Bajrang Dal people arrived and assaulted them, he alleged.

Slum demolitions in Delhi: Cong. MP raises issue in Lok Sabha
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday criticised the Delhi government, raising concern over the slum demolitions in the Capital during the Zero Hour of the Lok Sabha. This comes days after the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited areas where demolitions had taken place. Alleging that thousands of families were rendered homeless by the demolition of slums, he said it was being done in violation of existing policies of rehabilitation. 'Before elections, the ruling party [BJP] spent nights in the same slums, and they made assurances 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan (A home where the slum stands), but now after the elections, it has become 'jahan jhuggi, wahan bulldozer (A bulldozer where the slum stands)'. This is not governance, it is abandonment. It is time for this House to take notice, because how we treat the poorest amongst us is not a side issue, but it is the very soul of our Constitution,' Mr. Tagore said. Meanwhile, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav on Wednesday said that after Mr. Gandhi visited the demolished slum areas of the Capital, the Congress moved two adjournment motions in Parliament. 'Although BJP allowed the adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha today, nobody from the government gave a reply on the JJ Cluster demolition issue raised by LoP Rahul Gandhi, which raises the question of why BJP allowed the said adjournment motion when it did not want to answer the issues raised by Mr. Gandhi,' he said. Mr. Yadav said that all seven BJP Lok Sabha MPs from the Capital seemed to be unconcerned about the plight of the slum dwellers, or else, they would have spoken in favour of the slum dwellers in the House. 'The BJP government has destroyed more than 3000 slum clusters in its five months in power by breaking the promise of providing 3.5 lakh in-situ flats with all the basic civic services and ownership rights to the poor,' Mr. Yadav said. He added that the Delhi Congress will launch a campaign to get justice for the slum dwellers in every respect, including alternate accommodation for the displaced, who have played a major role in the development of Delhi. On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured that her government will ensure proper rehabilitation of 'eligible' slum dwellers displaced due to development projects.

His son on run since killing teacher, man slits own throat at police stn
Jaipur: In an unexpected development in the investigation into the killing of a govt school teacher in Banswara, the father of the murder accused allegedly slit his own throat at Kalinjara police station when he was brought there Wednesday for questioning about his son's whereabouts. Police have not clarified what the sharp object he used was or how he managed to harm himself. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Udaipur. The man, 50-year-old Hemant Bhagaura, is the father of Mahipal Bhagaura, a taxi driver accused of murdering 36-year-old Leela Tabiyar, a Grade-II Sanskrit teacher. The killing took place on July 1, when Leela was waiting at the Kalinjara town bus stand. According to police, Mahipal arrived in a car and attacked her without warning, stabbing her repeatedly in the stomach with a sword in full public view. Leela collapsed at the scene as stunned bystanders watched in disbelief. Mahipal tried to flee but crashed his car into a tree shortly after and escaped on foot. He has been on the run since. Police said they brought Hemant Bhagaura in for questioning Wednesday morning. Shortly after his arrival at the police station, officers noticed blood oozing from his throat. "He was immediately taken to a local hospital and later referred to Udaipur for treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo We recorded his statement, in which he said he injured himself," said Vikram Singh Ranawat, SHO of Kalinjara police station.
