Slum demolitions in Delhi: Cong. MP raises issue in Lok Sabha

The Hindu2 days ago
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday criticised the Delhi government, raising concern over the slum demolitions in the Capital during the Zero Hour of the Lok Sabha. This comes days after the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited areas where demolitions had taken place.
Alleging that thousands of families were rendered homeless by the demolition of slums, he said it was being done in violation of existing policies of rehabilitation.
'Before elections, the ruling party [BJP] spent nights in the same slums, and they made assurances 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan (A home where the slum stands), but now after the elections, it has become 'jahan jhuggi, wahan bulldozer (A bulldozer where the slum stands)'. This is not governance, it is abandonment. It is time for this House to take notice, because how we treat the poorest amongst us is not a side issue, but it is the very soul of our Constitution,' Mr. Tagore said.
Meanwhile, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav on Wednesday said that after Mr. Gandhi visited the demolished slum areas of the Capital, the Congress moved two adjournment motions in Parliament.
'Although BJP allowed the adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha today, nobody from the government gave a reply on the JJ Cluster demolition issue raised by LoP Rahul Gandhi, which raises the question of why BJP allowed the said adjournment motion when it did not want to answer the issues raised by Mr. Gandhi,' he said.
Mr. Yadav said that all seven BJP Lok Sabha MPs from the Capital seemed to be unconcerned about the plight of the slum dwellers, or else, they would have spoken in favour of the slum dwellers in the House. 'The BJP government has destroyed more than 3000 slum clusters in its five months in power by breaking the promise of providing 3.5 lakh in-situ flats with all the basic civic services and ownership rights to the poor,' Mr. Yadav said.
He added that the Delhi Congress will launch a campaign to get justice for the slum dwellers in every respect, including alternate accommodation for the displaced, who have played a major role in the development of Delhi.
On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured that her government will ensure proper rehabilitation of 'eligible' slum dwellers displaced due to development projects.

Ignore such baseless allegations made on daily basis: EC on Rahul Gandhi's remarks on 'vote chori'

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday responded to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations against the poll body, accusing it of large-scale voter fraud ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. Gandhi had claimed to have "open and shut" evidence of alleged poll irregularities by the poll authority and said that it would have no place to hide. The poll body slammed his claims as 'baseless' and 'irresponsible,' advising EC officials not to pay heed to such daily allegations and threats. The EC in a statement said, "The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations being made on a daily basis and, despite daily threats being given, urges all election officials to disregard such irresponsible statements and continue to work impartially, fairly, and transparently." The EC said that its primary focus remains on upholding democratic values and ensuring free and fair elections across the country. Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi accused Election Commission of induling in "vote chori" (vote theft) for the BJP. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament, Rahul claimed that he had "open and shut proof" of ECI's involvement in vote theft when asked about the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in poll-bound Bihar. Gandhi said his party had suspicions of poll irregularities in Madhya Pradesh assembly polls in 2023, then in the Lok Sabha polls and then the Maharashtra assembly polls. "We have said that there is a theft of votes happening and now we have open and shut proof that the Election Commission is involved in theft of votes. I am not saying it lightly, I am saying it with hundred percent proof. As soon as we release it, the entire nation will come to know that Election Commission is working for the BJP to steal votes," Rahul said.

MDMK leader Vaiko rules out rift with DMK, reiterates firm opposition to BJP, Hindutva forces

CHENNAI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday dismissed speculation about his party snapping ties with the DMK and reiterated that his party will never have any association, even at any slightest level, with the BJP or its affiliates. Addressing the media after meeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at his residence to inquire about his health, he strongly refuted reports from sections of the media claiming that the MDMK might sever ties with the DMK. 'Such reports are baseless and fabricated,' he said. He asserted that his party will never compromise its stance in opposition to Hindutva forces. 'I have consistently criticised the BJP and the RSS in all my public meetings and will continue to do so. Under no circumstances will the MDMK have any form of relationship, even remotely, with these forces,' he said. He expressed confidence that the DMK-led alliance will secure a majority and return to power in 2026. 'There will be no coalition government in Tamil Nadu in 2026. Under the leadership of M K Stalin, the DMK alliance will win a clear mandate,' he said. On the caste-motivated murder of young software professional Kavin Selva Ganesh in Tirunelveli, Vaiko said, 'The police have taken swift action in the case. To prevent such honour killings, stringent laws must be enacted.' He said he conveyed his wishes to the CM for a speedy and full recovery. He lauded that the CM continued to discharge his official duties without any interruption even while being hospitalised last week.

Kiren Rijiju slams Rahul Gandhi over Trump's ‘Dead Economy' endorsement: ‘Playing Dangerous Game'

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday alleged that the Congress leader was 'playing a dangerous game" that would harm the country through his endorsement of such views, which were also rejected by many in the Congress party itself. 'Rahul Gandhi speaks against the nation. Many are saying he is playing a dangerous game to harm the country. His anti-India language is being opposed by many prominent people in the Opposition, too. They also say you cannot describe India as a dead economy," Rijiju said. On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi seconded Trump's criticism of the Indian economy, keeping it parallel to the Russian economy, and said that everyone 'except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister" knows about it.
