In Ghaziabad village where cop shot dead, many families leave, scared by ‘carpet searches'
Ghaziabad : Since Sunday night's shootout with aides of a gangster that led to the death of a 27-year-old Noida police constable, many families have left Nahal village amid round-the-clock police surveillance, questioning of locals and 'carpet searches' to find those who had attacked the police team. Police have so far made 14 arrests, but prime suspect Aadil remains elusive. That night when Saurabh Kumar Deshwal was shot in the head, police were successful in arresting Qadir, the gangster who they had gone to pick up after a tipoff from an informer. Aadil is Qadir's brother and is believed to have led the attempt to ambush the cops when they were on their way out of the village with Qadir. Nahal's streets have been deserted for three days, but now, so are many of its houses, with locks hanging on them as fear of arrest haunts the village around 3km off NH-9. Nahal has a population of 40,000. Village Pradhan Tasawwar Ali told TOI on Wednesday, "About 70% of the people living here have left. They need to go out every day to earn and feed their families, but an atmosphere of fear now prevails here. So they have left and are staying with their friends or relatives. They have left their livestock behind. We don't know how to take care of them." The Pradhan said sudden summons by police for questioning had scared locals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alarma con cámara a precio especial en Buenos Aires (ver oferta) Verisure Alarma Empieza ahora Undo "We met the police commissioner on Wednesday and requested that innocent people should not be disturbed through night searches or by suddenly being taken into custody. Two days ago, 35 people were taken. Today, 15 people were rounded up. These are all innocent people. They have no information," said Ali. A resident of the village who left recently told TOI many feared being arrested. "My family has been living in this village for more than 50 years now. We are a family of 14 and have never seen anything like this in our lives," the 30-year-old said. "I have come to a relative's place with my whole family. It became difficult to even sleep at home with continuous sirens of police vehicles scaring people. We will only go back once the situation is normal. " Ali said village representatives had told the police to "punish the guilty but leave the innocent alone". "Many families have young children, pregnant women and elderly. We are ready to support the police as responsible citizens to catch the criminals and get them punished. But not at the cost of the innocent," he said. "It's also not easy to be living here for those who haven't left because one can barely go out. Besides, shops are closed. I want police to pick up the real culprits at the earliest so the rest of the village can live peacefully again," another local resident said. DCP (Rural) Surendra Nath Tewari told TOI that 14 people have been arrested after they were identified from CCTV footage. "No one has been detained. People are only being brought in for questioning and then let go. We have identified a few more people from the footage, but we are yet to get a clear and complete footage from the night. We are also working on that," he said. Tewari said PAC and police personnel from 5-6 stations were deployed at the village to maintain law and order. "Such incidents tend to spark fear among people, so some families have left the village," the DCP said, adding that senior cops met the village's pradhan and assured them that no unnecessary arrests would be made.

Swadeshi call a contrast in shrinking manufacturing sector : Akhilesh
1 2 Lucknow: A day after PM Narendra Modi urged people to prefer swadeshi to imported items, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the call for 'self-reliance made little sense in a scenario where big corporate houses were flooding the Indian market with imported products and services. In a post on X, Akhilesh quoted PM's speech in Gandhinagar on Tuesday where he outlined the role of smaller cities in making India world's third largest economy. Modi said people should buy locally made swadeshi products as their contribution strengthens the economy. Akhilesh pointed out that the smaller cities and towns in India rely heavily on cottage industry and the Indian manufacturing sector which has shrunk rapidly in the recent past. This has automatically paved the way for entry of imported goods in the Indian market. "Manufacturing and production sectors in India are constantly shrinking which has led to lopsided development trajectory and unequal distribution of income. This is happening because industrial houses are being elbowed out by corporates which are only focusing on trading of goods from abroad to sell them in the Indian market," Akhilesh said in a statement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alarma con cámara a precio especial en Buenos Aires (ver oferta) Verisure Alarma Empieza ahora Undo He said the new economic order taking shape in India has taken its toll on cottage and micro segments of the industrial sector. He maintained that industrial houses are slowly and systematically being sidelined, as a result the value of our raw material, skill and talent is on the decline, taking a heavy toll on job and employment opportunities. "What is worse, talk of self-reliance has been reduced to a mere slogan, behind the scenes deals are being struck to import goods and services from world's top corporate giants. These products and services are being pushed into every sector of the Indian economy . This has turned (us) into selling agents of these multinationals," Akhilesh said. Such policies are forcing the Indian economy to become dependent on imported finished goods rather than empowering domestic production, he said. "The rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer," he said, adding that no govt can add to the prosperity of the country by "betraying its own economy". He said the real development and economic progress will come from improving the per capita income in India rather than trillion-dollar economy statistics. "Due to the faulty economic policies of the BJP govt, there has been no relief from rising prices. Under the BJP govt, farmers, youth and traders are feeling cheated," said senior SP functionary prof Sudhir Panwar. "Farmers were promised that their incomes will be doubled but on the contrary their cost of production has increased because of rise in prices of seeds and fertilizers. Joblessness among youth is at an all time high. Traders and small businessmen are yet to come out of the economic slowdown that followed demonetisation. In such a situation everybody is struggling to make two ends meet, leave alone contributing to an economic agenda," Panwar said.

Indian Pittas to Paradise Flycatchers: Rare summer migratory birds flock to Aravalis
1 2 3 Gurgaon: Indian Pitta , Indian Golden Oriole, Indian Paradise Flycatcher , Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Common Cuckoo — the birding fraternity is spoilt for choice. Summer migratory birds are filling the woods with their songs and bright colours. Bird watchers are reporting sightings of several species since it is that time of the year when flocks of summer migratory birds visit Mangar, Bhondsi, Aravali Biodiversity Park, Chandu and Budhera fields. While a few of these birds soon make their way further north, some choose to stay in the Aravalis to breed. According to experts, birds travel to the Aravalis during this season every year as the region still has a comfortable space and an abundance of food for these winged creatures. Pankaj Gupta, a birder from Delhi Bird Society, says, "The summer migrant birds are finally here. They get an ideal atmosphere in the Aravalis to stay in summer. Although several species arrived, many are yet to come. The summer migrants which are yet to arrive are Pied Cuckoo, Black-headed Cuckooshrike, Bitterns, Watercock and others." "Several resident birds — Indian Bush Lark, Bonelli's Eagle, Grey-breasted Prinia, Jungle Prinia, Rufous-fronted Prinia and Common Kingfisher — are also spotted," Pankaj said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Alarma con cámara casi regalada en Córdoba (ver oferta) Verisure Alarma Ver oferta Undo He said several birds will soon start breeding as the region has sufficient food availability for the birds. "Several birds fly to this part for summer to breed as there are enough food sources. Thus, these landscapes of the region should be conserved," Gupta said. These summer migrants return to these patches every year because old native trees like peepal, dhau and palash in the forests of Mangar, Chandu, Basai, Bhodsi and Bundhera create an ideal habitat for them. "These are special places because the birds return year after year," conservationist Sunil Harsana said. Other than Indian Pitta, bird enthusiasts also throng the local birding sites to see the bee-eater, another summer visitor to NCR. According to birders, the leopard trail and Sakatpur are the best places to find a Blue-tailed Bee-eater. Pheasant-tailed Jacana can be spotted in Chandu and Basai. Common Cuckoo can be spotted in Mangar and Bhondsi. The Blue-tailed Bee-eater is an easy catch in Mangar. Then, there is the Paradise Flycatcher which prefers to nest in the forested area of the Aravalis. The Aravali Forest and Sultanpur National Park are some of the best places to spot this beauty, experts said. On the other hand, resident birds are busy securing a breeding place and gathering nesting material. The latter is a significant function of this season for birds. It is not surprising that an almost limitless variety of materials, including stones and mud, animal and plant products and human-made artefacts, have at one time or another been incorporated into nests. The birds that are already breeding are lapwing, lark and pipit.
