M23-Backed Congo River Coalition Accuses Kinshasa of Undermining U.S.-Brokered Peace Deal
A rebel coalition in eastern DR Congo has accused the Kinshasa government of escalating military operations in densely populated areas, days after a U.S.-brokered peace agreement was signed in Washington between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. In a statement issued Saturday, the Congo River Coalition, which includes the M23 rebel group, claimed that Congolese forces, backed by the Burundian National Defence Force, deployed heavy weaponry in civilian zones, warning that the mobilization 'risks triggering a humanitarian catastrophe.' Coalition spokesperson Laurence Kanyuka described the moves as a 'provocative and reckless military build-up' that runs counter to ongoing Qatari-mediated talks in Doha. 'Such actions not only violate the spirit of the Washington agreement, but also demonstrate a blatant disregard for the civilian population,' the statement read. Signed on June 27, the Washington peace deal committed both Congo and Rwanda to halting support for armed groups, respecting territorial integrity, and establishing a joint mechanism to dismantle the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). It also outlined steps for dialogue between Kinshasa and M23, alongside humanitarian and economic stabilization measures for the troubled eastern provinces. But the rebel coalition now questions Kinshasa's political will to uphold the agreement. 'While we remain committed to a political solution, the government continues to stall on confidence-building measures,' the group stated, accusing the authorities of 'dangerous double standards.' The coalition said it reserves the right to 'defend civilians and its positions' if attacks continue, branding the current military campaign as 'criminal aggression.' Tensions further escalated this week following Congolese reports of an unidentified aircraft entering the country's airspace. The incident has reignited concerns about the fragile nature of the truce and the challenges facing regional actors attempting to de-escalate one of Africa's longest-running conflicts.

Israel strikes Gaza as death toll surpasses 57,000
Shafaq News – Gaza Israeli airstrikes and shelling continued across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, targeting shelters, homes, and public infrastructure, amid worsening humanitarian conditions. According to the latest report from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, 70 people were confirmed killed and 332 injured in the past 24 hours. Among the casualties were 23 individuals who had gathered near aid distribution points, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking food assistance to 743, with more than 4,891 injured. The Ministry warned that many victims remain trapped under the rubble or in inaccessible areas where emergency teams cannot reach due to ongoing bombardment. عمليات نسف كبيرة ينفذها جيش الاحتلال وسط وشرق مدينة خانيونس. — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) July 6, 2025 Since October 7, 2023, the overall death toll in Gaza has risen to 57,338, with at least 135,957 injured. The figures also show that since March 18, 2025, 6,780 people have been killed and nearly 24,000 wounded. The Israeli military campaign, now in its 639th day, has escalated in recent days with new air and ground operations. Footage from local media showed widespread destruction in residential neighborhoods and displacement camps. Israel rejected amendments submitted by Hamas to a Qatari-mediated ceasefire proposal, calling them unacceptable. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed Israel's participation in renewed indirect negotiations in Doha.

India ‘Closely Following' IAEA Updates on Radiation Levels at Iranian Nuclear Targets
New Delhi: India is closely following updates provided by the UN-linked nuclear watchdog in the aftermath of Israel and the US's strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the external affairs ministry said, adding that it continues to urge for the early return of peace to the region through dialogue and diplomacy. Asked during the ministry's weekly press conference on Thursday (June 26) about New Delhi's views on Israeli attacks on nuclear scientists in Iran, ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India is 'closely following updates' from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding radiation levels at sites struck by Israel and the US. 'We have noted that so far [that the] IAEA has reported that the targeted facilities either confirmed [sic] no nuclear material, or small quantities of natural or low enriched uranium,' Jaiswal continued, adding to acknowledge the watchdog's assessment that there was no radioactive contamination outside the buildings struck. 'We urge [a] return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy, for an early restoration of regional peace, security and stability,' said Jaiswal, who also pointed to his ministry's earlier statement expressing concern over the stability of the region following the American strikes as well as welcoming the US- and Qatari-mediated ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Israel began striking Iranian nuclear facilities among other targets on June 13 as part of its 'Operation Rising Lion', which it initiated on the alleged grounds that Iran was on the cusp of obtaining a nuclear weapon, despite Tehran maintaining that its nuclear programme only serves civilian aims. The two sides went on to fire missiles at each other over the next week and the US entered the conflict on Sunday, with its airmen bombing the three key Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Tehran retaliated by attacking a US air base in Qatar and a day later a ceasefire mediated by Washington and Doha ended hostilities. India, which expressed concern at a number of occasions during the conflict but did not speak out against Israel or the US, had distanced itself from a statement of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation of which it is a member that strongly condemned the Israeli strikes on Iran. However, it did not make such a move when the BRICS bloc that it is also part of expressed 'grave concern' over the strikes on Iran and called them violations of international law. The Iranian embassy in New Delhi posted a statement on Wednesday that expressed 'heartfelt gratitude to all noble and freedom-loving people of India' that 'stood firmly and vocally with the great nation of Iran'. 'Once again, we express our sincere appreciation for the genuine and invaluable support shown by the people and institutions of the great nation of India,' it said on X. The IAEA had said on Tuesday that while the attacks on Iran's nuclear sites caused 'some localised radioactive as well as chemical release' inside facilities 'that contained nuclear material – mainly uranium enriched to varying degrees', there was no sign of an increase in radiation outside these places. Meanwhile, the agency's director general Rafael Grossi has estimated that Tehran's nuclear programme has suffered 'serious damage' as a result of the strikes. 'I think 'destroyed' is going too far,' he told French broadcaster RFI when asked if the attacks had devastated the country's nuclear programme, adding however that as Iran had 'focussed most of its uranium enrichment and conversion activities' at the three main sites, the programme would have suffered 'very serious damage'. It is 'clear' that the centrifuges at the underground site of Fordow – which the US is reported to have struck with its 'bunker buster' bombs – are 'no longer working', Rossi continued. As there is a question mark over how large a loss Iran's nuclear programme may have suffered due to the strikes, US President Donald Trump, who had claimed on Sunday that the bombing by his military 'completely and totally obliterated' the three key sites, tried to undermine media reports citing intelligence assessments saying that Tehran had been set back by only a few months. US defence secretary Pete Hegseth also claimed on Thursday that he was unaware of Iran moving any highly enriched uranium away from the targeted facilities before they were bombed by his country.

Trump: CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT, PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!
US President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that a ceasefire between Iran and 'Israel' has officially taken hold. 'THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!' Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. According to Trump, the agreement involves a phased implementation process stretching over 24 hours. Iran was to initiate the first step by suspending its operations starting at approximately 7:00 AM (GMT+3) on Tuesday. Twelve hours later, Israel was expected to reciprocate by halting its military actions. A senior Iranian official confirmed to Reuters that Iran agreed to a US-proposed ceasefire deal with 'Israel', which is Qatari-mediated and was announced by Donald Trump earlier. The report by Reuters adds that Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed Al Thani managed to secure Iran's agreement to the ceasefire proposal during a call with Iranian officials, which took place hours after Iran's attack on the Qatari-hosted American Al Udeid Base. The call came after Trump told Qatar's emir that 'Israel' agreed to the ceasefire, and asked for his help in persuading Iran to agree.
