Quadeville area still 'shrouded in mystery,' days after suspected animal attack
As families flee urban centres for the Canada Day long weekend, one popular eastern Ontario getaway is still under a warning that children should be kept indoors or under close supervision. A suspected animal attack last week in Quadeville, Ont., left an eight-year old girl with potentially life-threatening injuries. Now there's unease among tourists and locals alike about the safety of their kids. "Parents now — and me as a grandparent with grandkids in that area — will definitely be more vigilant," said Bev Stevenson, who works as a supervisor at the C O Country Market down the road in Combermere, Ont. Stevenson said the local population doubles in the summer because families love the area, with its many lakes and cottages, as an escape from city life. But the lack of information shared about last week's apparent attack has allowed rumours to spread, she said. "There might be a little bit more trepidation as to what [parents] allow their kids to do," Stevenson said. "Which is sad, because that's what the parents really enjoyed about having their kids up here on vacation — [the fact they can] be kids, which they don't get that opportunity in the city." WATCH | Community reacts to girl injured in attack Tuesday OPP investigating after 8-year-old found seriously injured in the woods | Hanomansing Tonight 3 days ago Duration 7:15 Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging parents in the Quadeville, Ont., area to keep their small children indoors or under close supervision, after a girl was found Tuesday with severe injuries. In a statement, the OPP said investigators 'suspect this to have been an animal attack,' and added that further testing is required to confirm what happened. 'Would be nice to have some answers' Ontario Provincial Police have not said much about the attack, including what sort of animal they believe might have been behind it. An OPP spokesperson told CBC on Friday that they couldn't provide an update on the investigation. "This whole thing is kind of shrouded in mystery, and that's what makes a lot of folks coming into the store asking if we've heard anything," said Stevenson. "It just would be nice to have some answers." Dave Green, a tourist originally from England, has also been unable to find answers. He stopped in at Stevenson's store during a visit to his sister-in-law's cottage. "It's very concerning, of course it is," Green said. "But nobody seems to know what the details are. So you have to be cautious of what you're doing in the community." In the absence of concrete details, Stevenson said rumours have grown and spread. As they arrive in the community, tourists "will be hearing a lot of stories, and unfortunately, not all those stories might be exactly correct," she said.

Police suspect animal attack after girl seriously injured in Quadeville, Ont.
Social Sharing Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) urged parents in the Quadeville, Ont., area to keep their small children indoors or under close supervision on Wednesday, after a young girl was found the day before with severe injuries suspected to have been caused by an animal. Emergency services responded around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday to reports that an eight-year-old girl who had been missing for hours was found with potentially life-threatening injuries in woods in Quadeville, a village located about 60 kilometres southwest of Renfrew. Little is publicly known about the nature of the girl's injuries, but OPP said in a statement Wednesday morning that "investigators suspect this to have been an animal attack." They cautioned that "further testing and analysis is required." They continued: "As a precaution, parents in the Quadeville area should continue to keep their small children indoors or under close supervision." OPP officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment are investigating the incident with the Ministry of Natural Resources, under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, with assistance from OPP forensic identification services and the OPP emergency response team. Joseph Fiorentino, the pastor of Quadeville Pentecostal Church, said the incident had shaken the tiny township of about 300 people. "The community is frightened for their own young children because of the ambiguity and the mysteries involved," Fiorentino told CBC on Wednesday. It's still not known what had happened to the girl or what caused he injuries, he said. "There's just no answers right now." Fifty members of the local community joined the search for the young girl on Monday evening after she went missing, Fiorentino said. The girl was found in area of forest behind homes located on Quadeville Road, with OPP requesting help from Brudenell Lyndoch and Raglan Fire Department. OPP officers cordoned off the area, leaving residents guessing what might have transpired, Fiorentino said. "We know nothing about her state or condition at the time she was found," he said. The injured girl was initially transported to St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry's Bay, according to Fiorentino. Later she was airlifted to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, with Ornge ambulance service confirming that they "transported a paediatric patient to CHEO with critical injuries relating to an animal attack." The girl is reported to be in stable condition in the intensive care unit, Fiorentino said. A doctor "did say it was a miracle she was alive," he added.

Police issue warning to parents after child injured in Quadeville, Ont.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents of Quadeville, a village about 60 kilometres southwest of Renfrew, to keep their children indoors or under close supervision following an incident that left a child with serious injuries. Upper Ottawa Valley OPP said the incident, which is still shrouded in mystery, occurred overnight. "Though this appears to be an isolated incident, investigators are still working to determine the cause of the child's injuries," police said Tuesday on social media. Renfrew Country paramedics confirmed to CBC that they provided care to the child, but did not elaborate on the nature of her injuries. OPP said the child remains in hospital and they are "working with medical officials as part of the investigation." They warned parents to keep their kids indoors or under close watch "until the source of the victim's injuries can be determined." "We honestly don't know what the source of the injuries was," OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson told CBC on Tuesday afternoon. Girl reported missing Monday OPP separately issued a missing persons bulletin on Monday night with photos of a child who'd last been seen around 6 p.m. at a grocery store in Quadeville. The missing child, who police said is eight years old, was later reported found. The Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Fire Department said on social media that "in light of the recent events in Quadeville" it would not be participating in local Canada Day festivities, including a fireworks display planned for Saturday. "Out of respect for the family, community & our firefighters mental health, we hope you understand," the fire department wrote. Quadeville is part of Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan township in Renfrew County, about 130 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa and 30 kilometres southeast of Barry's Bay. The township had about 1,550 residents as of the 2021 census.
