Teen charged in Quadeville, Ont. attack appears in court
The teenage boy accused of attempted murder and sexual assault in connection with an attack on an eight-year-old Quadeville, Ont. girl made a brief appearance in a Pembroke court on Thursday.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was in shackles and wore burgundy clothing as he entered the prisoner's box.
The teen's parents cried as he was brought into court with his dad hanging his head while resting his arm over the court bench.
The 17-year-old is charged with attempted murder and sexual assault with a weapon on a person under 16 years old.
On June 24, a young girl was found after midnight with life-threatening injuries along Quadeville Road in Quadeville, about 170 kilometres west of Ottawa. She'd been reported missing hours before.
Ontario Provincial Police initially said they suspected the girl was injured in an animal attack but didn't rule out human involvement. Animal traps were set up as a precaution and parents were asked to keep young children inside.
Samples taken from the victim's wounds revealed no traces of animal DNA, according to police.
On Saturday, OPP held a town hall in response to frustration and concerns from the community about what happened and the police response.
The 17-year-old will appear in court next month.

During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, striking the officer with a truck and trailer towing a boat. 'When you do a traffic stop and, there's no such thing as routine,' says Scott Mills of the Ontario Provincial Police Association. 'You always have to take the proper precautions especially when you are policing in a rural area. You're pretty cognizant that backup could be a distance away. The quicker you can call for backup when you think something's going to go wrong, even though if you don't know that it's going to go wrong, the better it is.' 'When you're in this situation, it can be quite frightening for a police officer and it just goes to show that the police officers that are out there, serving and protecting in the province of Ontario, they go above and beyond. They're always at risk. They're always in a potentially dangerous situation,' he added. A 40 year old from London is facing several charges.

Man wanted by Toronto police after failing to follow release orders

Police say they responded to a call just after midnight on Monday in the vicinity of Danforth and Woodbine avenues. The call was for a man accused of violating his release order to not contact another person. Investigators allege that the 'suspect contacted the victim on several occasions.' Abdullah Al Mamun, 23, of Toronto is wanted for 12 counts of failing to comply with his release order. Toronto police are seeking assistance from the public in locating him.

Ont. motorist charged with impaired after road rage directed at horseback rider

(File photo/Ontario Provincial Police/Facebook) A 59-year-old woman from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township faces an impaired driving charge after Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of erratic behaviour involving a horseback rider on Sugar Lake Road in Walford, Ont. The incident occurred on July 8 at about 10 p.m., when officers were called after a driver allegedly honked, yelled and drove dangerously near a horseback rider. The same driver then directed aggressive behaviour toward another vehicle attempting to assist. Authorities said they located the motorists a short time later and began an investigation. As a result, the accused has been charged with operation while impaired and is scheduled to appear in court in Espanola on Sept. 22. In addition to the charges, under provincial legislation, the motorist also received 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days at the owner's expense. Police appeal for safety on the roads In a news release Monday, OPP emphasized that roads are shared spaces, urging drivers to exercise caution around horseback riders by slowing down, avoiding sudden noises and passing only when safe. 'If you witness dangerous driving behaviour, do not hesitate to call 911. Your call could save someone's life,' said OPP Const. Berkley Parisien, in a social media post detailing the incident.
