Bloodbath at a barber shop after horror double stabbing in Queanbeyan - - leaving two men critically wounded
Two young men are fighting for their lives after a suspected stabbing in broad daylight. Emergency services were called to a barber shop on Crawford Street in Queanbeyan in southern NSW at about 1.10pm on Friday following reports of a brawl. By the time police arrived, two men believed to be aged in their 20s, had already been rushed to Queanbeyan Hospital with serious injuries. Both men are reported to be in a critical condition. Photos from the scene show a large police presence and the footpath outside the barber shop stained with blood, the Canberra Star reported. Police closed off a lane of traffic to motorists as investigators scoured the scene and placed evidence markers along the footpath. Nearby businesses, include a newsagent, other hair salons and a Kmart were forced to close their doors. 'Early indications suggest the injured men were stabbed,' a police statement read. 'It is not known whether other weapons were involved.' Detectives have established a crime scene and launched an investigation. The incident has shocked the tight-knit community near the ACT border. 'It had a bad reputation a long time ago, but it's actually a really lovely place in the 10-20 years I've known it,' one mum told the publication. 'That's why we're moving back... I would've never guessed something like this could've happened here though.' Another local added: 'On the surface it seems to be a very peaceful place. I wouldn't expect something like this to happen.' Anyone with information is urged to contact Queanbeyan Police Station or Crime Stoppers.

Moruya preview: Absent trainer Joe Cleary to monitor Gerry Harvey pair on way back from Darwin
Joe Cleary will be somewhere in the vicinity of 33,000 feet in the air when two of his spring, in partnership with the man he affectionately knows as 'Uncle Gerry', compete at ground level at Moruya on Tuesday. Cleary, as has often been the case, spends the first few days of each new season in the Top End where he invariably saddles up, or owns, a few in action on Darwin Cup day. With his flight home to Queanbeyan, via Canberra, taking up most of the daylight hours on Tuesday, Cleary will be monitoring the Gerry Harvey-bred and raced duo Feedback and Vermicella from the skies. Blue-blooded mare Vermicella is likely to start a warm favourite in Tuesday's feature Benchmark 66 Handicap despite being rolled at $1.60 at her last start at Moruya on July 11. That said, the Cleary/Harvey mare was a close runner-up in the Benchmark 74 and lost no love at home. 'She was good,'' Cleary said. 'It was probably half my fault. I rode her too close. I just thought Capital Heart would be out and rolling and try and pinch it but as it turned out, it just fell into Your Not The Boss' hands whereas we should have probably been back where it was and have one crack them. 'She will be ridden colder on Tuesday, getting her back into her comfort zone, and I think you'll see the real Vermicella. 'She just runs straight over the top of them.' Cleary has been for years Harvey's go-to man to improve the respective resumes of fillies and mares before they return home to the Widden Valley to join Harvey's elite broodmare band. There is no doubt Vermicella will have a home there given her royal family but it seems that it will be later rather than sooner in her case. 'If she comes out and wins easily on Tuesday maybe we go to a Goulburn Cup and then that's a back door into the Little Dance,'' Cleary said. 'She is only going to get better with age. I can see her being a real nice country cups horse over Christmas.' Your Not The Boss shows them who's boss! ðŸ'° A great ride from Wagga-based apprentice Holly Durnan grants a double for the @MitchBeerRacing stable. ✌ï¸ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 11, 2025 Vermicella's pedigree has Harvey's fingerprints all over it. Not only is she out of a mare by his New Zealand-based, hugely underrated stallion Swiss Ace, she is also a direct descendant of one of Harvey's most prized and successful foundation mares, St Kate. As for Vermicella's co-traveller and stablemate Feedback, his future earnings relies solely on his racetrack performances given he is a gelding. The son of Kermadec's first three runs were in Victoria when housed with Mitchell Freedman. Feedback changed states and stables over the autumn, resurfacing at Gundagai on June 28 finishing third on the Heavy 9. He followed that encouraging effort up with another third, this time over 1280m on the infamously on-pace Acton track in the nation's capital. 'The other day at Canberra, it was just a road for the leaders so in hindsight his run was a lot better than what it looked on paper,'' Cleary said. 'And he's trained on well. 'Before I came up here to Darwin, I gave him a gallop on the course proper and he worked super.' Feedback was listed as a $12 chance to win Tuesday's Tyre Torque Maiden Plate (1435m). 'Obviously I have got a healthy respect for Matty Dale's horse (Brannum/$1.95 fav), it's probably the one to beat on paper but Feedback has been screaming for seven furlongs,'' says Cleary. 'I think the addition of blinkers on his last start has really switched him on. 'He'll be ridden forward on Tuesday, look, he's not far off breaking his maiden.' â– â– â– â– â– Bayou won't rest on Laurels Keith Dryden will hand over one of the sport's most recognisable sets of silks to Doncaster Handicap-winning jockey James Innes Jr on Monday when the Laurel Oak mare Blue Bayou steps out at Moruya. Canberra icon Dryden famously steered iron horse Handle The Truth to almost $2m in revenue for Laurel Oak including the 2019 Kosciuszko. Others to promote the Laurel Oak brand in recent times were Golden Slipper winner Fireburn and her Sir Rupert Clarke and Manikato Stakes-winning father Rebel Dane, both housed at Gary Portelli's Warwick Farm digs. Small in stature but big on heart, Rebel Dane is in fact the equine equivalent of an 'uncle' of the Moruya-bound Blue Bayou. Tuesday will be her second consecutive visit to the venue in quick time having finished runner-up there on July 21. 'Great run first-up I thought,'' Dryden said. 'She finished off well. Probably this race might be fractionally stronger than that one but I can see Blue Bayou being pretty competitive. 'I thought each-way, she is probably my best of the day.' Dryden, and his co-trainer Libby Snowden, saddle up an inviting $11 chance in the North Ryde RSL Maiden (1310m) in Brume De Soliel, a direct descendant of the broodmare gem Easy Date (the mother of Snippets). The daughter of Everest winner and current Randwick 1200m track record holder Yes Yes Yes has finished seventh at her two runs this campaign, both holding more merit than it appears. 'When Jeff Penza rode her at her first race, he gave her a real good report but she pulled up young and sore and immature,'' Dryden explained. 'So we gave her a good spell and then brought her back. 'She was disappointing first-up, even though it was only a 1000m, but the second run was a lot improved and I thought she has improved again since. 'I wouldn't think she could win but I reckon she is a place chance.' Dryden and Snowden's other likely runner on Tuesday's south-coast card is Bon River. The daughter of Bon Hoffa was $16 on debut on the Acton track but has seemingly been unduly punished for her underwhelming performance, priced at 100/1 to win on Tuesday. 'It'll improve,'' Dryden said. 'It was a bit hard to work out the other day on the synthetic because everything that led, won. 'And it got well back but its sectionals were actually quite good.'

INSIDE MAIL – KEMBLA JAMARNI (2) was runner-up behind his stablemate Cuban Rain over 1300m on a heavy track here on June 3 and followed with a solid third to Caelus at Hawkesbury. Good chance to break through. WHY WHY WHY (4) was good on debut when third to Jared at Goulburn. Battled away okay when sixth to Shalaa Jet at Wyong. Gets in well with the 4kg claim. SO LONG FAREWELL (3) has claims on his second to Kundabung on the Kensington. GAMBLER (3) has always trialled well but hasn't delivered. He was caught wide at Newcastle last start. Won both recent trials nicely and time to show it on race day. CODENAME (2) is a first starter by Hanseatic. Was okay when third in his first trial here on May 12. Took benefit from the experience and was very good leading all-the-way to a near four length win in his second 17 days later. COSMIC EAGLE (6) was a handy third to First Landing on debut at Newcastle. CUBAN RAIN (3) showed a glimpse last preparation when a strong closing second to Rybakina over 1400m here. Kicked off this campaign with a third to Winner Of Kowloon before a smart win from Jamarni. Good chance again. JARED (2) had been runner-up six times with a number of close finishes. Finally broke through at Goulburn first-up before failing on the heavy track at Newcastle. Can bounce back. BUTTERFLY STYLE (5) dug deep to run down Rubilace in a tight finish at Sapphire Coast last start. SPACEBALLS (3) will take improvement from his first-up fourth to Mia Ballerina in a Bm64 at Canterbury. Scored a good win at Warwick Farm first-up last time in followed by a close third at Rosehill. Well placed dropping back to a Class 1. POINT SCORE (6) started third favourite on debut when down the track behind Rivellino at Randwick in January. Returned with a stylish win over 1000m here on May 31. HIPPOLYTE ROCK (2) has claims on his Super Maiden win at Newcastle before a spell. RAINBOW GODDESS (3) had a tough run out wide and was no match for Ninagloo Reef but held on for second when resuming at Hawkesbury. Had a bit of trouble getting a clear run on straightening when a nose second to Inncourt at Wyong. Can give this a shake. WILD THOUGHTS (1) did a nice job on debut when third behind Modella here back on Jan 29. Resumes here off a hard held all-the-way trial win. Wide gate the concern. BORDER TOWN (9) will take improvement from his first-up third here on June 3. UP AND UNDER (1) will appreciate a drop back in grade from two placings at Warwick Farm. Led from a wide gate when third to Knights Armour then tracked leader when third to Trapalanda over 2200m. Gets in well with the 4kg claim. PIPLUP (4) finished seventh in that race behind Trapalanda beaten two-and-a-half lengths. His two wins were over this trip, one of the at The Valley last November. ANT (5) got home well for a close third to Dark Arts at Canterbury second-up before a win over this track and trip. ALLEGRO MISS (7) scored a strong closing win in a Class 1 at Newcastle before jumping up to Midway company and not beat far in both goes. Best form is on wet tracks but she has placed on a Good 4. DIAMOND SHOW (6) followed a second to Bella Montagna here before back-to-back wins at Hawkesbury and Wyong. Chance for the hat-trick. TOM CRUISING (9) produced a good effort for second over 1212m at the Sapphire Coast first-up. Will appreciate stepping up to the mile where he has won twice. AUDENZIA (9) was wide early before getting outside the leader then going to the from on turn when just caught by Twilight Elegance here two runs back. Similar story here two weeks later when just beaten by Charleroi. Due for a win. STEEL RAIN (6) is also closing in on a win after three placings this time in. Narrowly beaten at Goulburn before a two length second to Unusual Prospect in a Gosford Super Maiden. CHEEKY DANCER (10) was third at Hawkesbury before being beaten a nose on a Good 4 in a Super Maiden at Tamworth. Not far behind the placegetters at her two runs since.

Court hears of 'bad blood' between alleged Oaks Estate shooter and victim
Prosecutors in the trial of a man allegedly involved in a shooting at Oaks Estate last year say the victim still has shotgun pellets lodged in his body. The victim and a woman had been walking on George Street in Oaks Estate at the time of the shooting, the court heard, after the victim's brother's house one street over was raided by police and they were asked to leave. It is alleged the pair saw an orange or gold coloured hatchback with no number plates drive past, which then did a U-Turn and stopped. In a recorded interview with police — played to the court — the woman told officers then-20-year-old Bronson Cross got out of the car with a shotgun and approached them saying: "Do you want to get shot?" The woman said she hid behind a tree while the victim talked to Mr Cross, telling him there were police nearby. Mr Cross allegedly shot the victim, who then ran down the road to seek help. "I didn't think he'd been shot because he ran," the woman told police. She said she also ran, fearing Mr Cross would fire another shot. Prosecutor Nathan Deakes told the court a man who'd been visiting his son in Oaks Estate heard a "loud bang" at about 1am that morning. When the man went outside, he was approached by the victim who told him: "Bronson Cross shot me". The court heard the victim was taken to the Queanbeyan Hospital and was later transferred to the Canberra Hospital, where he required a chest drain and surgery to remove shotgun pellets. Mr Deakes said Mr Cross and the victim knew each other from school but there had been some "bad blood" between them, including a physical altercation in the years before the shooting. Mr Cross was arrested on May 1, 2024 and extradited to the ACT accused of firearms offences and inflicting grievous bodily harm. Police released a CCTV image and photographs of the car which they allege Mr Cross was driving — later identified as a Nissan Micra. The prosecution alleged Mr Cross has been linked to the vehicle, with the identification of the offender the primary issue in the case. The trial continues.
