Maha police issues circular for protection of cattle traders
Mumbai: Following talks with cattle traders protesting increasing attacks from cow vigilantes, Maharashtra police have issued a circular saying only police will have powers to take action against illegal or unauthorised transportation of animals. The order specifies that it is illegal for private individuals to stop and check vehicles carrying cattle. The circular by special inspector general (law and order) Manoj Kumar Sharma came after a meeting where deputy CM and NCP chief Ajit Pawar issued instructions to stop gau-rakshaks (cow vigilantes) from checking livestock vehicles and harassing transporters and those involved in livestock business. A week ago, a delegation of the Federation of Maharashtra Muslims and the Qureshi community, which is traditionally associated with the meat trade, called on Pawar alleging harassment and torture, mainly in rural areas. They spoke of cases foisted on them. They said this had impacted the trade in livestock and animal products. Those who attended the meeting included former minister Nawab Malik, his daughter and MLA Sana Malik and prominent members of the Qureshi community besides DGP Rashmi Shukla and Mumbai police commissioner Deven Bharti. Sana Malik said several members of the Quresh community have lost their lives in such attacks by vigilantes. The state has amended the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act (1976) to ban the slaughter of cow progeny but the trade and slaughter of buffalo is permitted with regulations. The Qureshi community is "a part of Maharashtra's agriculture-based economy" and "no injustice will be allowed to be done to the traders of this community and the farmers who transport animals," the deputy CM had said in a statement after the meeting. Quresh community outfit holds meet to seek action against cow vigilantes
Agency: PTI Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) The All India Jamiatul Quresh (AIJQ) has held a meeting to demand strict action from the Maharashtra government against alleged harassment of cattle traders and farmers by cow vigilantes, a functionary of the organisation said on Friday. Cattle traders, farmers and members of the Quresh community are facing harassment while transporting livestock from APMCs, weekly markets etc, claimed AIJQ national vice president Imran Babu Quresh. 'These anti-social elements are obstructing the transportation of cattle. The action of the police in these cases is biased as well. False cases are being registered against innocent cattle traders and farmers under Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act. FIRs are being filed against buyers and sellers of livestock while the seized animals are being handed over to so-called gau rakshaks," he alleged. The meeting was held to call upon the state government to restrain these groups from carrying out such unlawful acts, he said. 'We have urged the Maharashtra government to set up regional committee or appropriate authority dedicated to safeguarding the interests of cattle traders and farmers and resolving their genuine difficulties," Quresh said.
