Alabama legislature considering lottery and expanded gaming

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)– Senator Greg Albritton (R-Atmore) joined CBS 42 Morning News to discuss the proposal of a new gambling bill this legislative session. In 2024, Sen. Albritton co-wrote a gambling bill that failed to pass the Senate by a single vote. Sen. Albritton did not vote for the bill, citing the lack of support from the Poarch band of Creek Indians headquartered in his district. The proposed bill would include sports gambling and a state lottery. The state would 'tax the devil out of all of it.' Sen. Albritton says he does not know if building new gaming properties would be included in the bill. According to Sen. Albritton, there has been difficulty among lawmakers agreeing on what should be included in this bill. 'They don't want to deal with it, first off,' said Sen. Albritton, 'and they will not respond as to what they want or don't want in the bill.' Alabama is currently one of five states that does not have a lottery. The last time Alabama voted on the lottery was 1999, which did not pass. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
